Principal’s Message At long last I am pleased to announce that our much vaunted Trade Skills Centre is on line and operative. This is a tremendous addition to the infrastructure of Warilla High School and I have no doubt it will significantly advantage students seeking careers in the engineering and metal manufacturing sectors. Likewise, our B Block café is taking shape as we continue to build the conditions for vocationally oriented students to hone their skills and competencies in an industry standard learning environment. Indeed, our foray into the built learning environments of our students has gathered momentum, and I am pleased to announce that on the back of a very competitive application process, we have been selected as 1 of only 15 schools across NSW to be involved in the Schools of the Future project. This initiative is designed to develop 21st Century learning spaces that impact meaningfully on pedagogy and have the net effect of changing how teachers ply their trade, ensuring that preferred learning styles are catered for and that independent, self-directed learners are the end result of our endeavours. A number of teaching spaces around the school will be modified to compliment the work being done in this area. I look forward to evaluative reports from Mrs Raison and the team she has assembled to work on this project. Our recent school swimming carnival unveiled our House structure. It was great to see improved attendance rates and both staff and kids getting into the spirit of the day and encouraging some friendly rivalry as each House sought to assert its superiority. Mr Stanizzo was delighted to see Lawson House take the day- something that he reminds those from other Houses of on a regular basis! The recent wave of hot weather has necessitated some contingency planning, including changing sports organisation to include shade and water breaks, busing students to venues and more “active” sports being taken off the agenda. Your support in ensuring students adequately hydrate and that sun protection is to the fore reinforces the messages being sent out by us, here in the school. We are in the process of increasing shaded and seating areas by the erection of shade sails in the new area adjacent to the library. The improved seating for this precinct is also on order and will be deployed at the first available opportunity after its arrival. As of the 1st March, new road rules pertaining to cyclists have come into effect. One of the more significant is the increase in fine from $79 to $317 for people caught riding push bikes without a helmet. We enforce the wearing of helmets as a matter of safety, and I would seek your support to reinforce this aspect of our work with your child, should they ride to school. I also seek your assistance in making sure that both riders and students walking home from school are courteous to neighbours and maintain the same high standards of behaviour that I expect from students at all times. Unfortunately, we have had some recent contact with neighbours in nearby streets which suggest that this is not always the case. The Year 12 students I have recently spoken with are approaching their upcoming half yearly examinations with resolve and confidence. It is pleasing to see them adopting the DEAL scaffold as a response feature in many of their subject areas. The use of DEAL has a proven record at the HSC and I would urge all students in their study and exam preparation to make this an active and integral aspect of their work. Finally, you may wish to attend our P&C meetings where robust discussion about the schools policies and positions on a range of interrelated areas are unpacked and critiqued in a non-threating and convivial atmosphere. The P&C meets on the second Tuesday of each month, commencing at 7pm, in the library…please come along.

With my kind regards, John Hambly

Special Provisions for the HSC 2016 The Board of Studies will allow students who have a “disability” to use special provisions for the HSC. They are practical arrangements designed to help students who can’t otherwise make a fair attempt at the HSC exams. The provisions are determined based on the way in which the student’s performance is disadvantaged during exams.

The definition of the term “disability” is very broad. Examples of disability include learning disability, literacy difficulty, and fine motor skill issues, medical problems such as diabetes, severe asthma, chronic back problems, physical disfigurement, and mental health such as anxiety, depression, bi-polar, neurological and sensory such as scotopic sensitivity or hearing loss.

Special Provisions available can include readers, writers, extra time, rest breaks and separate small group supervision. Applications are lodged electronically by Warilla High School staff. Documentary evidence is required as supporting evidence and must be submitted to the school for inclusion with the application.

The application process is lengthy. It is advisable to begin the application process as quickly as possible to avoid delays. Applications generally close at the end of Term 1, 2016. Applications may be lodged later in the year, even during the HSC exam period.

Information regarding Disability Support is available on the BOSTES website. Should you wish to find out more about Special Provisions please contact Ros Gaynor at school on 02 4296 3055.

Issue 2 – Term 1 – Week 8 14 March 2016 The Tell Them From Me student feedback survey We are delighted that this term, our school, like many others in the state, will again participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide our school with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. We want to assure you that the survey is confidential and school staff will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 14 March and 8 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the consent form to school by Friday 11 March. The FAQs and copies of the consent form, including translated consent forms, are available from the website above.

Issue 2 – Term 1 – Week 8 14 March 2016 Sport Report There has been an incredible amount of representation by students of Warilla High over the last 4 weeks.

Zone Swimming This carnival was held at Dapto Pool on 17th February

Jake ALMOND, Isaac Shaw, Lachlan Cairns, Joel Whalan, Jett Murray, Tom Ryan, Nat Marland, Nathan Robinson, Nathan Ross Kai Richards, Harley Nizza, Ethan Rowles, Liam Pass, Jai Marland, Koby McEwan, Nate Mathein, Jarrod Handcock, Matthew Schmitzer, Ben Hayman, Trent Clarke, Luke Hunter and Joshua Gibb. Brielle Lambert, Kristi Babic, Caitlyn Meuron, Kristina Naumovska, Kyana Snook, Emelie Robinson, Lori Miller, Maddelyn Newton, Grace McLeod, Tahni Dropulic, Madi Singleton, Ebony Freeman, Emma Hutchison, Elissa Hayman, Jordyn Burke, Tiarn Vernon and Emerson Leighton.

These students were outstanding in their efforts, so much so that Warilla High won the overall team event with 700 points from our nearest ‘rival’ Dapto HS by 162 points and are again Zone Champions. Brielle Lambert (12 years girl), Jet Murray (13 years boy), Kai Richards ((14 Years boy) and Jordyn Burke (16 years girls) were age champions and absolutely dominated their events and were on hand to encourage other swimmers as well.

Can I make a special mention of Emerson Leighton (Yr 12), swimming in her final year as a Warilla HS student. Emerson has been an outstanding representative for her school and her family, representing every year with such distinction and pride in her personal performances. We have been very proud to have you as one of our own Emerson and hope you continue to enjoy swimming, as it is such a wonderful lifelong activity. Can I also make mention of all the parents and grandparents and friends who were at the Zone Carnival encouraging their children. It is so rewarding to see the benefits of such a strong support network who are so positive about the involvement of their children. The South Coast Championships have recently been contested however results were not available at the time of publishing.

South Coast Coastal Zone Trials Ben Hayman and William Orth travelled to Nowra for the Zone hockey trials and were selected to trial in Goulburn in Week 8 for a place in the Open South Coast Hockey Team. Good luck boys.

NSW All Schools Triathlon Championships – Penrith Liam Pass and Madi Singleton – two extremely fit students in Year 8 contested this event in Week 5 and they required to swim 400m, cycle 10km and run 3km. Both students gained valuable experience from their first time in this competition and are already planning for next year. Results are not yet available on the CHS website however, Liam came 6th in the Combined High School section and we congratulate both students on their desire to contest this challenging event.

South Coast U15 Touch Trials – Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow Last Friday, ten students from Warilla High trialled for Touch teams to contest the state championships in Mudgee over the first weekend in May. No To Violence In previous editions of our newsletter and on our website and Face-book page, I have indicated the school's zero tolerance policy towards violence.

I have included my open letter to the school community again, as some students have recently resorted to violence to settle disputes. This is bitterly disappointing and something I refuse to accept. Again, I ask that you speak with your child about our policy and the need to bring issues to the notice of staff, year advisers, mentors, counsellors, class-room teachers, DP's- or whoever they feel comfortable discussing their concerns with. The safety and well-being of all demands that we develop in our students the capacity to resolve differences amicably and without confrontation. Students who don't comply will have their enrolment at this school reviewed. I thank you in anticipation of your ongoing and unwavering support of this position.

Issue 2 – Term 1 – Week 8 14 March 2016 Warilla High School Attendance During the last two terms, a growing number of students have been coming late to school, that is after the bell rings for the commencement of the school day, without a note from a parent or caregiver. Warilla High School is required under the Education Act 2009, to record and report on all absences (whole day or partial day absences). This includes students who are “a few minutes late”. Parents are responsible under the act to explain the absences of their children from school with either a note or a verbal notification in person or on the telephone. Listed below is a table of justified and unjustified absences as determined by the NSW Department of Education.

Justified Reasons Unjustified Reasons  Doctor’s/dentist appointment – must provide evidence, such as a  Sleeping in / alarm not working doctor’s certificate or letter.  Missed the bus  Appointment with other health care professional or similar service –  Traffic / road works must provide evidence, such as an appointment card or letter.  Walked to school  Special family circumstances – note/verbal explanation must be  Waiting for parent provided.  Minding sibling  Bus delayed – school will check to verify.  Shopping  Interview with Principal, Deputy Principal, Counsellor or other school  Other similar reasons personnel – staff involved must inform the front office.

Please Note: A note from a parent or verbal explanation from parent who drops student at school for any reason listed above as “unjustified” DOES NOT make the reason “justified”. Any late arrivals to school without this notification will be recorded as a partial absence and will be reported as an ‘Unexplained Partial Absence” on the student’s report card and on the official record of student attendance. In addition, any student who is late without a justified reason will be placed on detention by a member of the Senior Executive. Late Arrival Change of Procedures – Students arriving late between 8:30 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. are to report to the side window of the library. Any late arrivals after 9:15 a.m. are to report to the front office. Students who are late should bring a note from a parent or caregiver. Your cooperation with our obligations under the DEC Attendance Guidelines is greatly appreciated.
