Swaylands is a majestic and elegant estate that has been given a new lease of life through the most careful restoration and development of its architectural beauty. Set within grounds that are quite literally breathtaking, Swaylands offers its new residents that rare opportunity to discover the peace and tranquillity of gracious living whilst enjoying the best of contemporary luxury. The original house, fully restored, now offers twenty-eight luxurious individual homes. Each property demonstrates how the grand proportions of the original rooms have been sympathetically employed to embrace the many aspects of contemporary living that would have been inconceivable to the original architects. Two new developments, Drummond Hall and Woodgate Manor provide additional new generously proportioned apartments. These new complexes have been designed to embrace the rich architectural heritage of the estate and thus sit comfortably alongside the original buildings. All the homes at Swaylands, whether they be in the House, the Hall or the Manor, enjoy the same essential qualities - the beautiful kitchens and bathrooms, sumptuous bedrooms and spacious reception rooms. Together, they conspire to deliver a lifestyle that is definitively luxurious. Swaylands holding brochure:Layout 1 21/09/2009 17:30 Page 8 a legacy of charm and beauty that stretches back 150 years Swaylands was conceived back in the mid 19th century by William Woodgate who had it designed as a smaller version of his traditional family home – a splendid mansion on the outskirts of Tunbridge Wells. Subsequent owners, notably George James Drummond, were invariably high society and the house became well known in such circles for the splendour of its many grand parties and other social events. King Edward VII, a close friend of Drummond, was a regular visitor as became his daughter-in-law, Queen Mary, whose visits were documented with great pride in the local newspapers. Other notable visitors to this most sociable of estates included the writer and poet Seigfried Sassoon, and the author of Peter Pan, J.M. Barrie. The grand old house was requisitioned by the British military for use in the Second World War and managed to survive being a target for the Luftwaffe. Post-war, it became an educational establishment for boys, and more recently has emerged, thankfully unscathed, from various plans to divert its purpose away from that for which it was originally conceived – as a unique and blissfully peaceful place to enjoy a quality of life all too rare in these hurried times. Although the estate occupies forty acres of grounds, both landscaped and wooded, it seems as though its charms extend beyond the horizon. Not for nothing has Kent been known for centuries as The Garden of England – its unspoilt vistas have attracted visitors and artists alike to bathe in its peace and tranquillity. An abundance of flora and fauna await the ambling walker and the far views of hop fields will doubtless tickle the taste buds of those familiar with the joys of true English ale.
