The beats on this album feel very tight and calculated, a bit of a pun as he has a Ph.D. in mathematics. While this album features a very steady base layer of rhythm, Snaith braids unexpected samples such as a strings in the track “Silver.” This album contains pleasingly impersonal tracks that radiate a hollow warmth of sound. Rips by Ex Hex Genre: Rock If you like: Blondie, Chrissey Hinde, Heart DC’s Mary Timony, formerly in Wild Flag, Helium and Autoclave, has started her new all-girls trio Ex Hex. Rips, Ex Hex’s debut album, gets its influences from classic ’70s girl bands with its three-part harmonies over heavy-handed, fuzzy instrumentals. The entire track list of this album is drenched in teen angst, touching on subjects like heart break, cheating and infatuation with bad boys, but in no way is this a “girly album” with its cutting guitar solos by Timony. • NATIVE PLANT FIELD GUIDE Revised March 2012
NATIVE PLANT FIELD GUIDE Revised March 2012 Hansen's Northwest Native Plant Database www.nwplants.com Foreword Once upon a time, there was a very kind older gentleman who loved native plants. He lived in the Pacific northwest, so plants from this area were his focus. As a young lad, his grandfather showed him flowers and bushes and trees, the sweet taste of huckleberries and strawberries, the smell of Giant Sequoias, Incense Cedars, Junipers, pines and fir trees. He saw hummingbirds poking Honeysuckles and Columbines. He wandered the woods and discovered trillium. When he grew up, he still loved native plants--they were his passion. He built a garden of natives and then built a nursery so he could grow lots of plants and teach gardeners about them. He knew that alien plants and hybrids did not usually live peacefully with natives. In fact, most of them are fierce enemies, not well behaved, indeed, they crowd out and overtake natives. He wanted to share his information so he built a website. It had a front page, a page of plants on sale, and a page on how to plant natives. But he wanted more, lots more. So he asked for help. I volunteered and he began describing what he wanted his website to do, what it should look like, what it should say. He shared with me his dream of making his website so full of information, so inspiring, so educational that it would be the most important source of native plant lore on the internet, serving the entire world.

  • T Miss Shows of April
Mike D’s Top 5 Can’t Miss Shows of April 1. Sat, April 4: WBRU Rock Hunt Finals with Forest Fires, The Most Dangerous Men Alive, Public Alley, We Were Astronauts; 7pm doors / 8pm show; $5; All ages; The Met, 1005 Main St, Pawtucket. Death, taxes, 95.5 WBRU Rock Hunt. Here we are again, and as I did last year, here are each participant’s as- of-press-date official Vegas odds to win in this year’s battle. First up alphabetically are Providence’s mellow indie act Forest Fires. These guys are the favorites, radio ready and very tight live; odds for Forest Fires: 2 to 1. The Most Dangerous Men Alive stand the best chance to play the upset role. Hailing from the south shore of neighboring Massachusetts, MDMA not only bring the party rock, but they bring a big crowd. Could their fanatical fans sway the judges? Odds for MDMA: 4 to 1. The wildcard winner and final added act are Warwick’s own Public Alley. But who are Public Alley? And are they old enough to drive to The Met? They look young and sound good, but are they hungry enough to take the belt? Odds for Public Alley: 25 to 1. Boston’s We Were Astronauts are also radio ready and could stand to win. But could being from Boston deter this southern New England following? Odds for We Were Astronauts: 8 to 1. 2. Sat, April 11: The Sonics, Barrence Whitfield and the Savages; 7pm doors / 8pm show; $25 advance / $30 day of; All ages; Columbus Theatre, Providence.

A chainmail mesh that protects against despair, fake news, and cynicism. Overstatement? Perhaps. Like all compelling utopias, Wikipedia and working in the Wikipedia community does have a dark underside. But let’s look at the light . The Working Wikipedia Collaborative is a group of scholars, teachers, archivists, and librarians working with Wikipedia in higher ed in the Boston area — all women, some rogues, and all convinced of the educational and societal value of the utopian Wikipedia project. Three of us share our stories in this chapter, but these are just a part of the work the Collaborative has done together — workshops local, national, and global, presentations, in-class orientations, cross-institutional visits, publications, edit-a-thons, mentoring circles, and elevator pitches. Collaborative members are active sharers in the participatory and collaborative knowledge creation movement that some have come to call Wikiworld. We always write as the Working Wikipedia Collaborative, but each of our origin stories is unique — and strongly shaped by working with and on Wikipedia. For us, working with the encyclopedia and its community has been a valuable forging ground, shaping each of us into links in a wide-reaching mesh of personal and professional connections.

  • Kick-Ass Shows Are Going to Rock the Town All Season Long
Keep On Moving: Summer in the City!: Kick- ass shows are going to rock the town all season long J Kelley Band are releasing their debut album Burning Season. Burning Season reminds me of high- energy ’90s rock. “Ransom” sounds like the Gin Blossoms with an added thump. I like the backing vocals on “Drying Out,” which gives a soulful texture to the driving pop that sounds like The Rembrandts meets Black Crowes. The title track has a smidge of a Neil Young feel if he was in a struggling band in 1996. On the other hand “I Don’t Want To (But I like You)” just screams 1980s Rick Springfield in the most awesome way! A tidbit about the Burning Season record that shows the music community coming together is that the album was financed by a cool record store in New Bedford called Purchase Street Records. Stop in and check them out — they are a huge supporter of local music and have a great selection to boot! J Kelley Band will celebrate the release of Burning Season with album release show at Pour Farm in New Bedford on Thu, Jun 13, with Mitch Mellow. Sarah Potenza The pride of RI, Sarah Potenza, burst onto the national scene from her stirring performances on the 8th season of “The Voice.” Potenza has since relocated to Nashville and continued to thrive in the music industry. Potenza recently released a new album, Road to Rome, that is her most confident sounding album to date! Don’t miss out on welcoming Sarah home! Sarah Potenza will be at Chan’s in Woonsocket on Sat, Jun 15.
