Not sure what to say other than that. Shelves: mysteries. Re-reading this timeless treasure led me to discover that the Nancy Drew mysteries are not the novels of genius I once thought they were. This one The Thirteenth Pearl the particular distinction of not only being poorly written, but also containing numerous offensively discussed stereotypes about Japan and Japanese-Americans. People are described as "Oriental" and "Asiatic," and the entire mystery is really just an attempt for Carolyn Keene to describe for impressionable youth the "exotic" customs of the n Well. The mystery is solved at the end through The Thirteenth Pearl discovery of some weird cult ritual that comes out of left field and makes no sense whatsoever. In fact, the mystery is never really solved, so much as Carolyn clearly took a hit off the bong, wrote a paragraph, called it a night, and then sent the manuscript off without editing it. I think what's most displeasing is that Nancy's long-suffering, blue balled boyfriend Ned finally makes an appearance, only to once again be denied any sort of romantic dalliance with super prude Nancy. What caused Mrs. Drew's death one book said she died "suddenly" and one other one mentioned "a brief illness" but that's it? Why didn't Hannah, who was apparently married herself at some point, but has lived with the Drews since Mrs. Drew kicked it, ever get married to Carson? Could you really have a platonic relationship with your live-in housekeeper for fifteen years? I had this one as a girl, but I don't think I cracked the cover of it. Probably a good thing, because it makes no sense. Nancy goes on a wild-goose-chase to Japan and disguises herself as a Japanese girl with blue eyes and titian hair and none of the Japanese people are any the wiser. I thought "Asiatics" were supposed to be smart. This was one of the few trips she took with her father and no other entourage. Anyway, they eventually return to River Heights where all the bad guys are The Thirteenth Pearl thieves and a pearl-worshipping cult. Grammar issues that should have been caught were not. A couple examples: Plurals do not need an apostrophe. An apostrophe either before or after an "s" at the end of a word shows possession. In other words, the Cuttinis would refer to two or more people named Cuttini, and Cuttini's refers to something possess Wow! In other words, the Cuttinis would refer to two The Thirteenth Pearl more people named Cuttini, and Cuttini's refers to something possessed by Cuttini. A word showing relationship mom, dad, aunt, uncle, etc. That means it should be "my dad" or "our aunt Gertrude" and not "my Dad" or "our Aunt Gertrude. Moving to a new publisher would certainly kill any motivation I had to improve an inferior draft, so I don't believe my theory here is too far off. Had the proper editing been completed I don't believe the word "Asiatic" would have been used as Asian was already the more acceptable The Thirteenth Pearl choice. By the way, the original Nancy Drew series ended at book and there have been various spinoff series throughout the years. Enough grammar and history! There are better Nancy Drew stories than this out there. I suggest reading this one only to be a The Thirteenth Pearl or to learn how pearls are formed when mankind aids in the process or to learn Japanese customs as viewed through a s perspective. I hate when The Thirteenth Pearl goes to another country and everyone happens to speak English and The Thirteenth Pearl police are willing to drop everything to help her. Also Nancy seems to run around in circles and take a pointless trip to Japan. Not one of the best but it is the last of the original Nancy Drew series so it's worth a read. In my dark room, I'd get scared of the evil The Thirteenth Pearl in these tales. I used to fantasize being Nancy The Thirteenth Pearl. As a fan of this series, there wasn't many things that bothered me in this book. No I know the series continues after 56, but this technically is the last of the originals. Post a Comment. Oh, crap. Where to start? When I first opened this book, I was pretty sure how this review would go from the opening summary below …. So, yeah. Basically this whole mystery starts because a jeweler, Mr. Moto the most sympathetic person in the book, but definitely relegated to stereotype and also fits of fainting is robbed. I mean…I love you Mr. What ensues is a mystery that, like many others in the series, entails the villains seemingly chasing the Drews from place to place. Carson and Nancy go to Japan to investigate the possible dirty dealings of World Wide Gems and the disappearance of the rich The Thirteenth Pearl lady, Mrs. And now Nancy The Thirteenth Pearl even more convinced that some criminal ring has infiltrated World Wide Gems. Most of this mystery is too scattered to create a focus; while World Wide Gems is definitely at the center of it, the numerous disguises and elaborate fake pearl cult have me scratching my head at the end. Like, I get it. But a fake pearl cult? I mean, did they have to register as a religion? How did they recruit followers? It seems like they had to use an awful lot of jewels to recruit people. Why expend all of this effort getting a rando criminal The Thirteenth Pearl to impersonate Mrs. Rossmeyer because the real Mrs. A lot of the information was factually correct. Nancy The Thirteenth Pearl as a Japanese girl to blend in and spy on people, and she is essentially dressed as a geisha. Or ARE you? At one The Thirteenth Pearl, Nancy and her friends are chasing a criminal and ask a local for a description. I was actually physically relieved that this Italian The Thirteenth Pearl would buffer me from the relentless racism towards East Asian people for another few pages. And see how problematic my response is? And that, boys and girls, is how white guilt makes the lack of diversity in literature even worse. As awful as the depictions in these books are, we need to learn from them, not just whitewash characters from different backgrounds. But…needed The Thirteenth Pearl be said. The depictions in the book are what you would expect. While some are accurate, The Thirteenth Pearl are presented from such a white gaze that they are inherently problematic. I wish I could spend this book talking The Thirteenth Pearl the mystery, where it worked and where it fell flat, but the truth is, I could barely make it through the pages this time around. I have no such objectivity. I both love these books, AND I admit they are deeply wrong in many ways. Head Injuries:.
