Summer Camp Guest Artist Biographies
Summer Dance Camp 2012 Instructors * Returning from the 2010 and 2011 Summer Dance Camps Director/Choreographer Ashley Barnes earned a BFA from East Carolina University. She served as choreographer for Stage Struck and Center Stage Theatre for nine musical productions including: The Wizard of Oz, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Into the Woods, Lil’ Abner, Fiddler on the Roof, and Guys and Dolls, and was the winner of the Herman Award for outstanding choreography six times from 1998-2007. Her performance credits include such lead roles as "Clara," in The Nutcracker, "Anastasia" in Cinderella, "Louise" in Carousel, "Jitterbug" in The Wizard of Oz, "Eliza" in The King and I, and “The Wolf” in Peter and the Wolf. Ashley is currently a member of Forward Motion Dance Company. As Artistic Director of The Dance Element, Ashley directed, choreographed and created costumes for Peter and the Wolf (2010) and The Velveteen Rabbit (2011.) She has written the stage adaptation for this year’s production of Charlotte’s Web. Assistant Director Susan Turner* began dancing at age 5, and was assisting her teachers by age 14. Susan received her Bikram Yoga Certification in 2001, and enjoys teaching children and adults. Susan is a member of Forward Motion Dance Company. She teaches 1st and 2nd Grades at Friends School of Wilmington, where she has led summer and after-school art and yoga programs as well as assisted with the production of the musical The Wizard of Oz. Susan spent the summer of 2010 with The Dance Element, teaching a Yoga workshop, and starring as "Grandfather" in Peter and the Wolf. -

For 177 years the Nantucket Atheneum has enriched our island community through top quality library services and programs. This year the library served more than 200,000 adults, teens and children year round with free access to over 1.4 million books, CDs, and DVDs, reference and information services and a wide range of cultural and educational programs. In keeping with its long-standing tradition of educational and cultural programming, the Nantucket Atheneum is very excited to present a multifaceted dance experience on Nantucket for the fourth straight summer. This year’s performances feature the world’s best dancers from New York City Ballet and Paris Opera Ballet under the brilliant artistic direction of Benjamin Millepied. In addition to live music for two of the pieces in the program, this year’s program includes an exciting world premier by Justin Peck of the New York City Ballet. The festival this week has offered a sparkling array of free community events including two dance-related book author/illustrator talks, Frederick Wiseman’s film La Danse, Children’s Workshop, Lecture Demonstration and two youth master dance classes. -

MDAA 2018 Spring Workshop Guest Faculty TAP Josh Scribner is a Seattle-based dancer and choreographer known for his innovative approach to tap dance. He has toured with Cirque du Soleil and Iron Beats, performed as a soloist around the US and Canada, and is the founder and director of the Alchemy Tap Project. A 10-year student of Seattle tap dance icon Cheryl Johnson, Josh grew up performing with her youth company, "Tap Squad." Along the way came opportunities to work with masters like Savion Glover, Sam Weber, and Dianne Walker, sometimes sharing the stage with them at tap festivals around the country. As an adult, Josh began developing his unique style of choreography, finding inspiration in hip hop and electronic music as well as the traditional jazz and Latin rhythms he was raised with. This led him to create the Alchemy Tap Project, whose mission is to keep the art of tap dancing alive, evolving, and relevant to future generations." MODERN Stephanie Powell is a California native and a tenured Professor/Director of Dance at Long Beach City College. She has taught courses in academia for over 15 years and specializes in Dance History, Classical Ballet, Pointe, Modern, Jazz, Turns, Zumba, Dance Conditioning, Stretch and Relaxation, Pilates and Yoga. Powell is a certified instructor of the New York City Ballet Workout, Zumba, Qignition and BASI Pilates. She is the principal interpreter of the choreographic works of the legendary Donald McKayle, and stages his work around the world. Powell earned her Masters of Fine Arts in Dance with distinction from UC Irvine as a Chancellor’s Fellow and she has danced professionally with the Oakland Ballet, San Francisco Opera, Donald Byrd the Group, Contemporary West Dance Theatre, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. -

A Study on the Gender Imbalance Among Professional Choreographers Working in the Fields of Classical Ballet and Contemporary Dance
Where are the female choreographers? A study on the gender imbalance among professional choreographers working in the fields of classical ballet and contemporary dance. Jessica Teague August 2016 This Dissertation is submitted to City University as part of the requirements for the award of MA Culture, Policy and Management 1 Abstract The dissertation investigates the lack of women working as professional choreographers in both the UK and the wider international dance sector. Although dance as an art form within western cultures is often perceived as ‘the art of women,’ it is predominately men who are conceptualising the works and choreographing the movement. This study focuses on understanding the phenomenon that leads female choreographers to be less likely to produce works for leading dance companies and venues than their male counterparts. The research investigates the current scope of the gender imbalance in the professional choreographic field, the reasons for the imbalance and provides theories as to why the imbalance is more pronounced in the classical ballet sector compared to the contemporary dance field. The research draws together experiences and statistical evidence from two significant branches of the artistic process; the choreographers involved in creating dance and the Gatekeepers and organisations that commission them. Key issues surrounding the problem are identified and assessed through qualitative data drawn from interviews with nine professional female choreographers. A statistical analysis of the repertoire choices of 32 leading international dance companies quantifies and compares the severity of the gender imbalance at the highest professional level. The data indicates that the scope of the phenomenon affects not only the UK but also the majority of the Western world. -

BL PROGRAM NOTES LES BALLET JAZZ DE MONTRÉAL Tuesday, November 19, 2013 @ 7.30PM Centre In The Square, Kitchener photo: Benjamin Von Wong - Danseurs: Céline Cassone, Alexander Hille About the Company An internationally renowned contemporary dance company, BJM - Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal is a repertory company that presents a hybrid form of dance that combines the aesthetics of classical ballet and embraces many other different styles of dance. Founded in 1972 by Geneviève Salbaing, Eva von Gencsy and Eddy Toussaint, the company has pursued its own unique path over the decades. Very contemporary in its current approach, BJM performances are sexy, explosive, original and accessible, and its superb dancers are widely acclaimed. The term “jazz” in the name refers more to a “jazzing up” of classical ballet rather than a musical or dance style. Since 1998, BJM has been under the masterly command of Artistic Director Louis Robitaille. His unerring flair for attracting talented choreographers and presenting high calibre dance pieces keeps raising the bar for his team of performers and stage professionals. Mr. Robitaille has presented works by internationally acclaimed choreographers such as Mia Michaels, Trey McIntyre, Patrick Delcroix, Rodrigo Pederneiras, Mauro Bigonzetti, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Cayetano Soto and Barak Marshall. He is particularly interested in supporting and encouraging Canadian choreographers, composers and designers. The work of celebrated Canadian choreographers such as Dominic Dumais, Crystal Pite, Aszure Barton and more recently of Wen Wei Wang have enriched the BJM repertoire. BJM is one of Canada’s most popular dance companies. It has presented more than 2,000 performances in 65 countries to more than 2 million spectators, and is a veritable ambassador of Quebec and Canadian culture worldwide. -

Originally from Greensboro, North Carolina, Emery LeCrone began her training at The School of Greensboro Ballet and continued her work at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She attended summer sessions at the School of American Ballet on scholarship, studying under former New York City Ballet dancers Peter Boal, Kay Mazzo, Suki Schorer, and Susan Pilarre. After completing high school in 2005, she accepted a position with North Carolina Dance Theatre, under the direction of famed New York City Ballet principals Patricia McBride and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux. In her free time with the com- pany she began to choreograph and created her first piece for North Carolina Dance Theatre II in 2006. In 2010, she received a generous grant from The Jerome Robbins Foundation’s New Essential Works (NEW) Program, directed by Damian Woetzel, for the creation of Divergence for Oregon Ballet Theatre. Ms. LeCrone has also taught master classes and choreographed several new works at renowned university dance departments and schools such as The Academy of Dance Arts, The Studio New Canaan, Ridgefield Conservatory of Dance, The Greensboro Ballet, Hartt University, Barnard Dance Department, and Peridance Capezio Center. Currently, Ms. LeCrone resides in New York City and continues to teach, perform, and choreograph. Recent and upcoming commissions include The Juilliard School’s annual New Dances program (December, 2012), the University of the North Carolina School of The Arts Winter Dance Program (February, 2013), Minnesota Dance Theatre (May, 2013), and St.
