As Penni says, “I love him and he’s mine forever”. Photo by Evin Thayer Studios. 12 www.houstonpettalk.com For Better Or Worse… or better or worse, til death do us part….or at least that is how it should be when we take on the responsibility of a pet. The start of a new year is a time when we make resolutions, create new plans or Til Death Do Us Part reaffirm our commitment to previously established goals or relationships. Many homes have brought a new pet into their family over the holiday season so it seems an apt time to highlight the commitment we make to a pet when we give them a home. Just like humans, pets are not perfect. They have “issues” just as we do. TheyF do not come “trained”. They need exercise, attention, grooming and training. There will be vet bills, pet hair on the furniture, shredded wallpa- per, scratched doors, loud noises at inopportune times, waste removal and lots of other realities of pet ownership. Make sure you are prepared to handle these situations before you decide to get a pet. Remember, we are asking another species to fit into our lifestyle. Get- ting a pet is a responsibility we take on, for better or for worse. They are not disposable, they have emotions and they are helpless to speak for themselves. To understand how important the issue of keeping your commit- ment to a pet is, let’s look at some startling statistics in our own city of Houston: 125, 423 dogs and cats entered Houston shelters last year. Only 25,084 found a second home. 80,000 - 100,000 died although many were adoptable. Picture a perfectly healthy, innocent dog or cat being carried into the euthanasia room unsuspecting of their fate. Just days ago, they were liv- ing with their family and in just a few seconds they take their last breath. Given the sophistication of our country, this should not be happening. It’s a sad situation and it’s avoidable through responsible pet care, steriliza- tion and adopting animals from shelters or rescue groups. Shelters do amazing, thankless work to save as many animals as they can but there are simply too many animals to house and care for. A large part of the problem is owner turn-ins….people who do not want their pet any longer. They are unwilling to find solutions to whatever problem has brought them to the point of taking their pet to the shelter. They may think they are giving the pet up for adoption, but often they are sending them to a death sentence. Nonetheless, her owner found her “undesirable” but the folks at Houston Humane Society new better. After many attempts to solve her feather plucking habit by addressing boredom, investigating medical reasons and so forth, the HHS staff has decided to accept Izzy the way she is because she’s happy and healthy and therefore her appear- ance is unimportant. After meeting Izzy, it’s easy to see why Houston Humane Society Execu- tive Director, Sherry Ferguson decided to keep Izzy as a shelter pet. Izzy lives at the shelter and entertains the staff (she also chases the folks she doesn’t like which happen to be blondes!). She roams the halls in her ”minimalist” covering showing off her command of the English language including endearments such as “I love you”, “Bye-Bye”, “Whatcha Doin?” and everyone’s personal favorite, “Gimme A Kiss”.
