The Wisconsin Public Radio Association Welcomes Three New Board Members

Welcome to Paul Sturgul of Hurley, Katherine Schneider of Eau Claire and Fran Rauscher of Wales. The three were appointed to the Wisconsin Public Radio Association (WPRA) board of directors at the May 21 meeting of the board in Madison. Their four-year terms began on July 1.

The WPRA is the official nonprofit organization representing donors to Wisconsin Public Radio. The WPRA board represents the interests of donors and listeners and provides leadership in the areas of fundraising and advocacy for the high quality news, conversation, music and entertainment that WPR produces.

"I think WPR is such an important institution that I want to do whatever I can to help it strengthen and grow," Sturgul said. "I think it's important for people statewide to realize that the quality programs they've come to enjoy are maintained through public support," he added.

Sturgul, Schneider, and Rauscher are replacing departing members Laura Jasper of Cameron, Chris Powless of Oneida and Chet Gerlach of Madison, whose terms expired. We offer our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Laura, Chris and Chet for their dedication and generosity in service.

The next WPRA board meeting is set for September 25, 2015 in La Crosse.

AROUND WISCONSIN

There's Still Time To Enter Our Summer Photo Contest

There have been so many great photos entered into our summer photo contest - like this image of a paddler on Madeline Island by S. Stohre. But, if you haven't entered, there's still a few weeks left and we want to hear from you. The deadline is 11:59 p.m. C.S.T. on Labor Day, September 7, 2015.

To enter, submit photos in one or more of our five different contest categories, including Summer Fun, Summer Work, Summer Nature, Summer Cities and Summer People. We are looking for striking images of Wisconsin's people, places, cities and countryside that show off the best of the state during the summer months.

Entrants must indicate the appropriate category in which their images are to be judged and include their full name, mailing address, and phone number along with a caption or title (that includes the location of the photo) for each photo submitted.

Our Wisconsin Life Summer Life Photo Contest is open to all photographers at least 18 years of age, but you'll want to read the rules and guidelines, as well as details for entering.

Click here for rules and entry details.

Travel with WPR to Cuba, South Africa and Illinois

WPR's Kathleen Dunn will join a bus full of listeners this fall for a special weekend tour focused on Abraham Lincoln and the Lincoln Museum in Springfield, IL. 2015 is the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War and of Lincoln's death, and there's plenty to see and learn in the town that was central to Lincoln's life story.

By early February, when Wisconsin weather may not be the most desirable, Higher Ground Host Dr. Jonathan Overby will be getting ready to lead a trip to Cuba. Listeners on this musical and cultural journey will enjoy Cuba's varied sounds, rhythms and dance and experience the country's education system from inside an elementary school.

And finally, this spring, WPR Director Mike Crane will lead a true bucket list adventure - a trip to South Africa. Explore the beauty and culture of Cape Town, the history of Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, and a safari where you'll see plenty of wildlife.

Find more information on these trips, along with registration, at WPR.org/travel.
