Downend Park Farm stands at the end of October Lane, off Downend Road, and after the west tower of Horfield parish church, is the oldest standing building in the Bishopston, Horfield and Ashley Down area, but few people know of it. It is built in a style that was common in Gloucestershire in the late 16th and early to mid-17th centuries. Downend Park Farm – photo thanks to Andy Buchan On stylistic grounds the house is considered to have been built in the early part of the 17th century and it was run as a working dairy until after the 2nd World War. The site has had a chequered history and it is thanks first to successive members of the Sherrell family, who lived in the house from the end of the 19th century until the early 1980s, that it still stands and to owners since then who have maintained the building. All the original outbuildings are now gone. The farm was one of three that formed a small hamlet within the parish of Horfield; Downend House Farm was the second, and between the two and slightly to the north was the third farm, which was demolished Floor plan of house, as surveyed by Linda Hall in the late 1970s when Dovercourt Road was built.
