(Palestinian folk song) I dedicate this dissertation to my four beautiful young nieces, Rochelle (aged 6), Alyssa (aged 5), Sienna (aged 4) and Raquel (aged 3). When times got tough towards the end of my thesis journey, I would take my girls to the park, tutor them, read their books with them, watch cartoons, play hide and seek, angry birds, snakes and ladders, and even that painful tea party set. I will always be grateful that I have them in my life. The physical, psychological and social barriers that circulate us will not be around forever. One day, we will be free! Acknowledgements This doctorate is one of the most challenging and rewarding projects I have ever attempted. I have met the most amazing thinkers, researched the most inspiring and insightful topics, travelled to universities interstate and overseas, and spoken in front of hundreds of students in a lecture theatre.     Still Anti-Asian? Anti-Chinese? One Nation policies on Asian immigration and multiculturalism 仍然反亚裔?反华裔? 一国党针对亚裔移民和多元文化 的政策 Is Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party anti-Asian? Just how much has One Nation changed since Pauline Hanson first sat in the Australian Parliament two decades ago? This report reviews One Nation’s statements of the 1990s and the current policies of the party. It concludes that One Nation’s broad policies on immigration and multiculturalism remain essentially unchanged. Anti-Asian sentiments remain at One Nation’s core. Continuity in One Nation policy is reinforced by the party’s connections with anti-Asian immigration campaigners from the extreme right of Australian politics. Anti-Chinese thinking is a persistent sub-text in One Nation’s thinking and policy positions. Kathryn Lee Leader A thesis submitted to the University of Sydney in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Performance Studies July 2008 Abstract In this thesis, I examine the role performance plays in the adversarial criminal jury trial. The initial motivation behind this inquiry was the pervasiveness of a metaphor: why is the courtroom so frequently compared to a theatre? Most writings on this topic see the courtroom as bearing what might be termed a cosmetic resemblance to a theatre, making comparisons, for instance, between elements of costume and staging. I pursue a different line of argument. I argue that performance is not simply an embellishment of the trial process but rather a constitutive feature of the criminal jury trial. It is by means of what I call the performance of tradition that the trial acquires its social significance as a (supposedly) timeless bulwark of authority and impartiality. In the first three chapters I show that popular usage of the term ‗theatrical‘ (whether it be to describe the practice of a flamboyant lawyer, or a misbehaving defendant) is frequently laden with pejorative connotations and invariably (though usually only implicitly) invokes comparison to a presupposed authentic or natural way of behaviour (‗not-performing‘). Drawing on the work of Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu I argue that, whatever legal agents see as appropriate trial conduct (behaviour that is ‗not-performing‘), they are misrecognising the performative accomplishments and demands required of both legal agents and laypersons in the trial.

Box 6172 Kingston 2604 Re: Application for logo / objection Australia First Party (NSW) Incorporated Australian Electoral Act Section 129 / Tomas Fitzgerald This very lengthy objection is the product of an academic noted for his knowledge of intellectual property rights and related law. We thank him for his intervention. Nonetheless, there is an old bar-room saying that ‘bullshit baffles brains’. I would suggest that this objection is the perfect converse example of brains being hired to argue bullshit. Consequently, it needs some careful attention lest direction is lost. Mr. Fitzgerald states the law Section 129 and the power of the AEC to decline to register a logo. I intend to reply as I see and understand Mr. Fitzgerald’s objections. 1. Our position on this application reduces to a simple argument: Australia First Party does not seek to register the logo or the trademark of any other person as Mr. Fitzgerald would have it. A logo can be a composite thing or a simple thing, whatsoever the logo maker would design it to be. Mr. Fitzgerald says: The ordinary use of the word logo denotes a symbol or graphical representation that identifies an organisation or person. In this respect, logos are akin to trademarks, though they are not identical. The specific legal definition of trademark and the protections offered thereto will no doubt differ from logos more generally. Nevertheless, it is an apposite comparison. (p.4) Conversely, a political entity could not have a reasonable expectation that they are entitled to register as a political logo a graphical representation which is another person’s trademark.

Second Reading Mr GRAHAM WEST (Campbelltown—Parliamentary Secretary) [10.04 a.m.], on behalf of Mr Bob Debus: I move: That this bill be now read a second time. This bill contains important amendments to the Confiscation of Proceeds of Crime Act 1989, the Civil Liability Act 2002, the Crimes Act 1900 and the Forfeiture Act 1995. These amendments will improve the processes involved in confiscating criminal assets, broaden the scope of existing laws, make prosecutions easier, create new offences of money laundering, prevent mentally ill offenders from misusing civil damages paid to them, and prevent mentally ill murderers from profiting from their crime by applying the forfeiture rule. The amendments to the Confiscation of Proceeds of Crime Act implement recommendations arising from a comprehensive review of criminal asset confiscation laws in New South Wales. This review was jointly conducted by the Attorney General's Department and the Ministry of Police. The review was informed by a group of experts drawn from NSW Police, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the New South Wales Crime Commission, the Legal Aid Commission, the Public Trust Office, the New South Wales Law Society, the New South Wales Bar Association, and the Australian Crime Commission.
