MAPPING HEBREW EDUCATION IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS: A Resource for Hebrew Educators WORKING PAPER SHARON AVNI AVITAL KARPMAN SEPTEMBER 2019 SEPTEMBER At the George Washington University’s Graduate School of Education and Human Development (GSEHD), we advance knowledge through meaningful research that improves the policy and practice of education. Together, more than 1,600 faculty, researchers and graduate students make up the GSEHD community of scholars. Founded in 1909, GSEHD continues to take on the challenges of the 21st century because we believe that education is the single greatest contributor to economic success and social progress. The Consortium for Applied Studies in Jewish Education (CASJE) is an evolving community of researchers, practitioners, and philanthropic leaders dedicated to improving the quality of knowledge that can be used to guide the work of Jewish education. The Consortium supports research shaped by the wisdom of practice, practice guided by research, and philanthropy informed by a sound base of evidence. AUTHORS Sharon Avni, PhD, CUNY (BMCC) Sharon Avni is Associate Professor of Language and Literacy in the Department of Academic Literacy and Linguistics at CUNY-BMCC. Avital Karpman, PhD, University of Maryland, College Park Avital Karpman is Associate Clinical Professor of Hebrew and Director of the Hebrew Program at the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Maryland, College Park. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS We wish to acknowledge the substantial help and encouragement we received from Dr. Peter Friedman z”l of the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago, who passed away before this report was completed. SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND In the past decade, there has been a resurgence in the study of Hebrew in traditional and charter public schools.1 However, the types of schools teaching Hebrew and the demographics of students studying Hebrew do not resemble those of earlier iterations of public school Hebrew programs that trace back to the early 20th century.

  • Changes in the Sensory Characteristics of Mango Cultivars During the Production of Mango Purée and Sorbet
DIFFERENCES IN SENSORY CHARACTERISTICS AMONG VARIOUS MANGO CULTIVARS IN THE FORM OF FRESH SLICED MANGO, MANGO PURÉE, AND MANGO SORBET by CHRISTIE N. LEDEKER B.S., University of Delaware, 2008 A THESIS submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF SCIENCE Interdisciplinary Food Science Graduate Program Department of Human Nutrition KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2011 Approved by: Major Professor Dr. Delores H. Chambers Abstract Fresh mangoes are highly perishable, and therefore, they are often processed to extend shelf-life and facilitate exportation. Studying the transformation that mango cultivars undergo throughout processing can aid in selecting appropriate varieties for products. In the 1st part of this study, the flavor and texture properties of 4 mango cultivars available in the United States (U.S.) were analyzed. Highly trained descriptive panelists in the U.S. evaluated fresh, purée, and sorbet samples prepared from each cultivar. Purées were made by pulverizing mango flesh, passing it through a china cap, and heating it to 85 °C for 15 s. For the sorbets, purées were diluted with water (1:1), sucrose was added, and the bases were frozen in a batch ice cream freezer. Much of the texture variation among cultivars was lost after fresh samples were transformed into purées, whereas much of the flavor and texture variation among cultivars was lost once fresh mangoes and mango purées were transformed into sorbets. Compared to the other cultivars, Haden and Tommy Atkins underwent greater transformations in flavor throughout sorbet preparation, and processing reduced the intensities of some unpleasant flavors in these cultivars.

  • Eurovision Rules Brief
EUROVISION RULES Participation: The participants of the Eurovision Song Contest are not people, they’re not even countries, they’re broadcasters. In order to participate, a broadcaster must be an “active” (i.e., due paying) member of the European Broadcasting Union. This is a confederation of broadcasters that lie within the European Broadcasting Area. The European Broadcasting Area as defined by the International Telecommunication Union: “The "European Broadcasting Area" is bounded on the west by the western boundary of Region 1, on the east by the meridian 40° East of Greenwich and on the south by the parallel 30° North so as to include the western part of the USSR, the northern part of Saudi Arabia and that part of those countries bordering the Mediterranean within these limits. In addition, Iraq, Jordan and that part of the territory of Turkey lying outside the above limits are included in the European Broadcasting Area.” Thus allowing Israel and Morocco to compete without actually being in Europe. Beyond the geographical limitations on participation, broadcasters must provide free, nation-wide service. Liechtensteiner broadcaster 1FLTV tried to get around this rule in 1964, creating a song to enter into the Contest. The EBU quickly rejected this entry, as the 1FLTV1 is not in the EBU. Broadcasters have until the December immediately preceding the Contest to file the appropriate paperwork for participation and pay the entry fee. There can only be one entry per country. However, broadcasters can work together within a country to supply a joint entry. Countries then have until mid-March, when the heads of the various delegations meet in the host city, to submit their official entry (lyrics, backing track, and performing artist).
