LONDON 2017 Location Guide LONDON 2017 Location Guide Accommodation As students studying in London, you will be living in one of the most beautiful areas of the city - Kensington. This part of the city is quiet, safe, and home to the Prince William and Princess Kate! The Crofton (http://fie.org.uk/the-crofton) ● Foundation for International Education (FIE) residence hall that is just a 10 minute walk from Foundation House where you’ll be taking classes ● There is a laundry room in the basement. Laundry costs £4 per load. ● There are large kitchens on each floor that are fully equipped with cooking tools as well as large fridges and freezers. ● Rooms vary from doubles to quads and all have en suite bathrooms. Bedding ● A comforter, sheets, and a pillow are provided, but you will need to supply your own towels, which you can purchase upon arrival in London. Mailing Address 14 Queen’s Gate Kensington, United Kingdom SW7 5PE Academic Resources You will be studying with the Foundation for International Education (FIE) during your semester in London. FIE provides excellent faculty and support staff as well as interesting classes that take you out into the heart of London. Where to study ● Common spaces in the residence hall - kitchens, study rooms ● Foundation House – There is a student lounge in the basement with comfy couches and Wi-Fi. ● Metrogate House – There is a computer lab/study room in the basement as well as printers to use. ● Coffee Shops LONDON * DUBLIN * KELOWNA ○ Fleet River Cafe in Holborn has large tables and free wi-fi, making it a great place to get some work done. ○ Starbucks, Caffe Nero, Fait Maison all have wi-fi as well. Services Provided ● Writing Support tutors - FIE provides writing support for students who want to have someone look over their papers before they submit them. Food London is truly a global city, and with that comes a global cuisine. There are thousands of restaurants, markets, and food stands to try, but be sure to budget your money and cook a good bit. Since you will not have a meal plan, you will be responsible for making or buying your own meals. Grocery Stores ● Sainsbury’s - cheapest option close by ● Tesco - mini across from the Gloucester tube station; larger store at Earls Court, about a 25 minute walk away ● Waitrose - a little more expensive than Sainsbury’s or Tesco, but very close to the residence and Foundation House ● Whole Foods - expensive, but a lot of variety; on High Street Kensington ● Partridge’s - the most expensive by far, but closest to Metrogate/Crofton ● Be sure to get a Sainsbury’s and MyWaitrose card. You can use the MyWaitrose for a free coffee/latte while you shop Local coffee shops ● Starbucks (Gloucester Rd - two locations) - free wi-fi ● Fait Maison (Gloucester Rd) - free wi-fi ● Caffe Nero (Gloucester Rd) - free wi-fi Restaurants ● Da Mario’s - Italian - Gloucester Rd, very close to Metrogate - moderate price ● Hereford Arms - English - Gloucester Rd, great Bangers and Mash ● Light of India - Indian - Gloucester Rd, delicious chicken tikka masala ● Fast food on Gloucester Road ○ Burger King, KFC, Ask Italian, Cafe Deco Finances England uses the British Pound (£) as their currency, which is worth a bit more than the U.S. Dollar, so be sure to convert your money when determining how much you’re spending. LONDON * DUBLIN * KELOWNA What to budget ● Students should budget $150 per week for groceries, restaurants, laundry, and miscellaneous costs. This cost can be lowered if you cook more and budget wisely. ATMS/credit/debit cards ● Barclays ATMs are spread throughout the city and may or may not charge for withdrawals depending on your bank. ● You can use your credit/debit card pretty much anywhere in the city, but make sure you are aware of any transaction fees that may occur. ● Be sure to contact your bank before you leave to inform them that you will be traveling outside of the country. International Phone Service You may be in another country, but it is easier than ever to stay in contact with friends and family back home. Purchasing Phones ● Students are required to purchase a UK phone number upon arrival in London. We recommend purchasing a SIM card instead of buying a cheap phone - this way you don’t have to carry around two phones everywhere you go. International phone plans do not fulfill this requirement. ○ SIM cards/ cheap phone plans will cost about £20 per month ○ Carphone Warehouse is the easiest place to do this - High Street Kensington or Earl’s Court (https://www.carphonewarehouse.com/) Useful Apps to Download ● Tube Map - This is absolutely necessary! You can use it without wifi to help you figure out which tube stop you need to get off at. ● Citymapper - This app is very useful. It tells you how to get somewhere and the best method of transportation to use. You can also download maps to use offline in order to save on data costs. ● Time Out - There’s a weekly publication, but if you want to know all about cool events happening in London, this is what you want to use. ● WhatsApp/Viber - great for texting/calling people that don’t have Facetime/iMessenger Health and Wellness This may be your first time away from home, and it is important to take care of yourself. London is a great city to get in some exercise because there are so many places to see. Be sure to make sure you’re eating right, getting plenty of sleep, and know when you need to ask for help. LONDON * DUBLIN * KELOWNA Pharmacy ● Boots Pharmacy ● Gloucester Road and Kensington High Street ● General medication, first aid, prescription pick up Doctor/Walk-in Centres: ● You will need to bring £50 in cash with you. If they write you a prescription, that will add another £25 to the total cost of the visit. You may be able to claim some of this money back from your U.S. insurance company afterward. ● Earl’s Court Health and Wellbeing Centre ○ Phone #: 020 7341 0300 ○ Address: 2B Hogarth Road, Earl’s Court, London SW5 0PT ○ Hours of Operation: Mon & Thurs 8am - 8pm, Tues & Wed 7:30am - 7pm, Fri 8am - 7pm, Sat 9am - 12pm ● Parsons Green NHS Walk-in Centre ○ Phone #: 020 8102 4300 ○ Address: 5-7 Parsons Green, London, SW6 4UL ○ Hours of Operation: Mon-Fri 8am - 8pm, Sat & Sun 9am - 1:30pm Mental Health ● Psychotherapist: Dr. Hill ○ Dr. Hill is an excellent resource for students to use if they are having any issues with anxiety, depression, and homesickness. ○ This service is offered free of charge, but students are limited to three visits. Charges will apply starting with the fourth visit. Hospital info ● Usually a few hours wait, but the best option after hours ● Fulham NHS Urgent Care Centre - Fulham Palace Rd ● SoHo NHS Walk-in Centre - 1 Frith Street Local gyms, places to workout ● Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens - right down the road! ● Holland Park ● Kensington Leisure Centre (http://www.better.org.uk/leisure-centre/london/kensington- and-chelsea/kensington-leisure-centre) ● David Lloyd (https://www.davidlloyd.co.uk/) ● Fitness First (http://www.fitnessfirst.co.uk/gyms-near/gyms-in-london/) LONDON * DUBLIN * KELOWNA Transportation (https://tfl.gov.uk/) London is home to one of the best transportation systems in the world - the Tube! You’ll find that you can get almost anywhere you need to go via the tube, but you’ll also have access to buses, trains, and cabs to get you to your next destination. An Oyster travel card provides Zone 1 & 2 rides during your semester in London and will be given to you upon your arrival in London. Tube/London Underground ● This is the most popular and easiest form of transportation. ● Your Oyster card will take you anywhere within Zones 1 & 2. ● Stations nearby: Gloucester Rd and South Kensington Buses ● Buses can be more convenient depending on where you are traveling. ● Nearby stops: Queen’s Gate, South Kensington ● Your Oyster card can be used on any of the buses. Cabs ● Black cabs are all over London, but they are the most expensive form of transportation. ● Can be used if you need a lift from the grocery store (about £5) ● You can pick them up anywhere in the city. DLR, London Overground ● Occasionally, you may use the DLR or London Overground, but it really depends on where you are traveling (Greenwich, for example). ● You can access this with your Oyster card for an additional fee. Santander Bikes ● More commonly referred to as “Boris Bikes” after the former Mayor of London. ● You can pick them up in various places around the city for about £2. ● These are great for riding around the parks, but be cautious on the streets of London.
