SogniSogni RubatiRubati © Di Jeff Hawkins, 2008.

ADVISORS: Professor Jennifer Mitchell and Professor Anastasia Pease This thesis investigates the physical and mental factors extremist religious organizations, such as the Westboro Baptist Church, Church of Scientology and Fundamentalist Mormonism use to decrease the chance of members’ departure from their institutions. These factors include familial relationships, physical and mental limitations, and restricted exposure to society outside of the religious organization. The following memoirs illustrate and expose these difficulties and how the female authors overcome these limitations: Educated by Tara Westover, Beyond Belief: My Secret Life Inside Scientology and My Harrowing Escape by Jenna Miscavige Hill and Unfollow: A Memoir of Loving and Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church by Megan Phelps-Roper.

  • Bohemian Rhapsody
8 Bohemian Rhapsody aul Haggis and Deborah Rennard married in 1997, soon after Paul’s divorce from Diane became nal. Paul was still seeking joint custody of his three daughters. Without Pconsulting him, Diane had taken Lauren and Katy out of the Delphi Academy, apparently intending to enroll them in public school. Paul and Diane were ordered by the court to undergo psychiatric evaluation, a procedure that Scientology abhors. In December 1998, the court surprised everyone by awarding Paul full custody of his daughters. According to court records, the ruling followed the discovery that the girls were not enrolled in school at all. The girls were stunned. They had watched the hostilities through Diane’s eyes. No one had prepared them for the possibility that they might be taken from her—until then, it had been the three girls and their mother against the world. The girls thought the decision was unbalanced and unfairly inuenced by the fact that their father had more money. Alissa vowed she would never speak to him again. Haggis was also caught short by the court’s decision. In addition to the year-old son, James, he had with Deborah, he suddenly had two teenage daughters on his hands as well. (Alissa was twenty-one at the time, and lived on her own.) The girls felt uprooted and they missed the emotional support of their mother. They didn’t resent Deborah; actually, they appreciated her advocacy and the way she balanced out Paul. Still, it was a difficult adjustment for everyone. Paul put the girls in a private school, but that lasted only six months.

I think Jenna's story isn't unique in terms of what life on "base" is like. As the niece of the Church of Scientology's leader David Miscavige, she grew up at the center of this highly controversial and powerful organization. That she now helps others who want to escape is proof of her compassion. Even with the huge time commitment that the Sea Beyond Belief: My Secret Life Inside Scientology and My Harrowing Escape required, Beyond Belief: My Secret Life Inside Scientology and My Harrowing Escape parents had actually been happy there until the late s, when they started getting frustrated with the management at the Flag Land Base. What left me on the fence about the struggles and angst within this book was that there was no outward abuse and no blatant personal violations handed down. Just don't forget your own religion looks just as weird to others, Beyond Belief: My Secret Life Inside Scientology and My Harrowing Escape please do not pretend that your church has never done anything unconventional or inappropriate.

  • Paul Haggis Vs. the Church of Scientology
PROFILES THE APOSTATE Paul Haggis vs. the Church of Scientology. by Lawrence Wright FEBRUARY 14, 2011 n August 19, 2009, Tommy Davis, the chief O spokesperson for the Church of Scientology International, received a letter from the film director and screenwriter Paul Haggis. “For ten months now I have been writing to ask you to make a public statement denouncing the actions of the Church of Scientology of San Diego,” Haggis wrote. Before the 2008 elections, a staff member at Scientology’s San Diego church had signed its name to an online petition supporting Proposition 8, which asserted that the State of California should sanction marriage only “between a man and a woman.” The proposition passed. As Haggis Asked how high he got in Scientology’s saw it, the San Diego church’s “public sponsorship of levels of study, Haggis said, “All the way to Proposition 8, which succeeded in taking away the civil the top.” Photograph by Mary Ellen Mark. rights of gay and lesbian citizens of California—rights that were granted them by the Supreme Court of our state—is a stain on the integrity of our organization and a stain on us personally. Our public association with that hate-filled legislation shames us.” Haggis wrote, “Silence is consent, Tommy. I refuse to consent.” He concluded, “I hereby resign my membership in the Church of Scientology.” Haggis was prominent in both Scientology and Hollywood, two communities that often converge. Although he is less famous than certain other Scientologists, such as Tom Cruise and John Travolta, he had been in the organization for nearly thirty-five years.

Now, think of a cat. In Jenna's case, it was what she was born into and the only way of life she knew. Ron Hubbard was a Navy man and had a passion for naval traditions. Jenna makes the mistake of falling in love, and that is where Scientology is at its worst in combating basic human nature. But most religions seem that way to people of different religions or people of no religions at all - that's right, you all look weird to meright, so who are any of us to judge? Her memoir will fill you in on the details of Scientology's operations and what it's like to be a Scientologist, and should scare off anyone even remotely considering treating this cult as a legitimate religion or a place to find answers. Second: the remaining hardcore "faithful" are basically the children and grandchildren of Scientologists who grew up in the "church" and have never known anything else. Dad was very athletic, and although he played football in school, his real passion was gymnastics. It is alive and well and thrives among us, in a free and democratic country. Five years later, I met a follower of 'The Way'.
