On January 25, celebrated 40 years of Niles West Girls Basketball. Former players and coaches gathered in the Niles West gymnasium to recognize past achievements, reconnect, and to honor Coach Gene Earl, who coached the Niles West Girls team to a state championship in 1979, just a few short years after the establish- ment of the program.

The crowd cheered wildly as members of the 1979 championship team and the 1981 team (Final Four) were recog- nized and Head Coaches Arlene Mulder, Gene Earl, Becky Schnell Tuecke (W’82), Dave Genis, Lou Metallo and Tony Konsewicz were acknowledged.

“It was a fantastic day,” said Tuecke, a Niles West teacher and coach who organized the event. “The turnout was un- believable and people were so excited about how girls basketball has grown in the last 40 years and to know that they were a part of it.”

In February, 100 students and their chaperones boarded buses to Elmhurst College and Northern Illinois Univer- sity. Most of these students are “first generation,” those who are the first in their family to attend college.

At Elmhurst College, students attended an admissions presentation, toured the campus, met with multicultural student leaders at the school, and enjoyed lunch. The buses then traveled on to NIU, where students had a campus tour and an admissions presentation with a student panel.

Niles North and Niles West students enjoyed the trip and had a valu- able experience that will assist them with their college search.

“My thanks to the guidance teams at both schools...and especially to the D219 Foundation for its financial support, which provided the coach buses and the lunch at Elmhurst College,” said Jerry Pope, Na- tional College Adviser at D219.

Pope, who has been on all of the bus trips said, “I can’t emphasize enough that the support from the District 219 Education Foundation is making a difference in the lives of our students.” 3 District 219 Education Foundation | www.219foundation.org Spring 2014 3 ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Niles North Celebrates 50 Years -- Niles North Alumnus Tapped for Join in the Festivities D219 Board of Education Vacancy on Sept. 19 - 21

Memorial Scholarship in Honor of Legendary Player

A memorial scholarship has been established in the name of Al Karnatz (NTHS’55), a legendary basketball player who played for Niles Township, setting the all-time scoring record while a senior. Upon his graduation, his jersey num- ber (37) was retired. Karnatz went on to play at the collegiate level at Valparaiso University. Mrs. Sandi Karnatz, his widow, is setting up fundraising events and online fundraising tools to go towards the scholarship. Scholarships will be avail- able for boys and girls who love the game of basketball. Mrs. Karnatz aims to raise between $10,000 and $20,000 to keep the scholarship sustainable.
