    Public Awareness and Community-Based Conservation for the Horseshoe Crab at Saikai National Park in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan Chikako Iwaoka and Toshinao Okayama Abstract Formerly horseshoe crabs (Tachypleus tridentatus) were commonly distributed in Japan. However, the horseshoe crab population has been decreasing due to habitat loss caused by coastline development. The Saikai Pearl Sea Center Aquarium (SPSCA) has been conducting many activities for horseshoe crab conservation at Kujukushima Islands in Japan. In SPSCA, we attach great importance to cooperation with local fishermen for public aware- ness. Because there is so much by-catch of horseshoe crabs in the Kujukushima area, local fishermen bring us much useful information on distribution and habitat. Basically, horseshoe crabs are a burden to fishermen. We make much effort to deepen their understanding of horseshoe crabs. Recently local fishermen are recognizing that horseshoe crabs are endangered and valuable animals. We also exhibit living horseshoe crabs at SPSCA, give lectures to local schools, conduct excursions to observe the habitat of horseshoe crabs, engage in cooperation with local government, and publicize our work in newspapers and TV. For research activities, we measure morphology for all individual by-caught horseshoe crabs and submit blood samples for DNA analysis in Kyushu University. We report on the public awareness and research activities at SPSCA. 1 Introduction 1.1 Background The horseshoe crab (Tachypleus tridentatus) is well known as a ‘‘living fossil’’ in Japan. Formerly horseshoe crabs were commonly distributed from the northern part of Kyushu Island to the Inland Sea of Japan (Sekiguchi, 1998). In this neighborhood, there are connected shopping arcades, Yonkacho Shopping Street and Sankacho Shopping Street, which combined have the longest length of any shopping arcade in Japan (a total length of 960 meters), and these are directly connected shopping arcades that are used for daily shopping by the locals in the area.

    232 August 2016 JAPANESE PHILATELY, VOL. 71 : NO. 4 _______________________________________________________________________________ First-Day Scenic and Swordguard Cancellations on National Park Issues This article incorporates some updated information identified subsequent to the publication of the August 2016 issue. by Anker Nielsen Introduction These days, new stamp issues, such as Commemorative and Special issues and Greetings issues, which have a more “national” character, have special pictorial first-day cancels that are used at officially designated post offices. For the more localized Prefectural issues there is no special pictorial cancel authorized, but instead the designated first-day post office(s) uses its scenic datestamp as a first-day pictorial datestamp. This latter practice of using scenic datestamps was also employed in the now discontinued National Park issues. It is easy to find covers with first-day cancellations from the National Park issues. Many covers were never sent through the post (i.e., purposely unaddressed) and have only a scenic datestamp(s) cancelling the stamps. If sent within Japan it should also have a domestic comb cancel, and if sent to a foreign country it should also have a roman-letter cancellation. For those National Park stamps issued from April 1952 this roman-letter cancellation will be a swordguard. The most interesting first-day covers to collect are those sent overseas from a designated post office within the park. A number of these are rather small and many started using a scenic datestamp only from the first day that its relevant national park stamp(s) was issued. Sometimes the post office got its swordguard canceller especially for that day.

    Nagasaki prefecture / Sasebo City “Nagasaki IR Scheme” Nagasaki Prefecture and Sasebo City Joint Council for the Promotion of IR 0 Nagasaki prefecture / Sasebo City “Nagasaki IR Scheme” １．introduction This outline of the Nagasaki Integrated Resort (IR) Scheme summarizes the present basic concept of the IR scheme devised by Nagasaki Prefecture and Sasebo City based on discussions held by an expert committee. We will conduct studies to formulate the basic scheme that will include more specific efforts based on this outline, gathering opinions from residents in the prefecture, and related business operators. 2. Necessity of IRs 1) Necessity of IRs The number of overseas tourists around the world exceeded 1.0 billion in 2012, and there is a growing need for international tourism to Asia. The number of tourists from ASEAN countries to Japan reached 1.1 million in 2013, and is expected to increase significantly in the future. In this situation, the introduction of IRs has drawn attention as new tourism resources. In Singapore, IRs have attracted many tourists and have produced significant economic effects since their opening in 2010. As a result of the success of the IRs in Singapore, activities toward introducing IRs have already commenced in South Korea, Russia (Vladivostok), and Macao. Taiwan is also conducting a study toward the introduction of IRs. Casinos, the driving force behind the economic effects of IRs, are said to be legalized in more than 140 countries around the world. They have already been legalized in all of the G8 countries except Japan. Regarding the introduction of IRs in Japan, the Bill Promoting Implementation of Specified Integrated Resort Areas (IR Promotion Bill) was submitted to the Diet in December 2013.
