Costa Pacifica will also be visiting Catania during summer 2020. Genoa, October 11, 2019 – Costa Cruises announces big changes intended to further increase the company's presence in Sardinia and Sicily. The first concerns Costa Smeralda, the new flagship currently nearing completion at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland. During the 2020 summer season, from May 28 to September 24, Costa Smeralda will be in Cagliari every Thursday, from 7.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., making a total of 18 calls. The one-week itinerary will include Savona (Saturday), Marseilles (Sunday), Barcelona (Monday), Palma de Mallorca (Tuesday), Cagliari (Thursday) and Civitavecchia (Friday). From October 1, 2020 to April 8, 2021, it will be Palermo's turn to welcome Costa Smeralda every Thursday, from 7.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m., for a total of 28 calls. The itinerary will remain unchanged, with Palermo replacing Cagliari. In addition to Costa Smeralda, Costa Diadema will also be calling at Palermo every Tuesday from April to the end of September 2020, while during the winter of 2020/21, Costa Fortuna will arrive every Friday. Costa's calls in Palermo from January 2020 to April 2021 will therefore increase to 77 in total. The second development relates instead to Costa Pacifica. Starting from today, five Pepper robots will be operative on all 7‐day cruises of the Costa’s flagship in the Western Mediterranean: their task will be to entertain cruise passengers, making their on board experience even more unique and unforgettable. This innovation, unique in the cruise industry, is the result of an agreement signed between the Italian cruise company and SoftBank Robotics (formerly Aldebaran), part of SoftBank Group, announced late last year. Launched in 2014 in Tokyo, Pepper is well equipped with features and a high‐level interface for communicating with those around him, using the latest advances in voice and face recognition. On board Costa Diadema, Pepper is able to speak 3 different languages ‐ Italian, English and French – so to better interact with the Costa’s international clientele. “Thanks to the introduction of these robots on board Costa Diadema, Costa Cruises confirms once again its great spirit of innovation.     CRUISE SHIP LOCATIONS 16 MAY 2021 Compiled by Mike Pryce, Wellington NZ (Information believed correct at this date. Compiled from various sources and internet AIS, especially www.cruisemapper.com. Excludes ferries and cruise ferries. Many cruise ships have been in “warm” lay-up, when they have periodically moved from their berths or anchorages and gone for short voyages locally to give their engines and equipment “a run”, and including production of freshwater, before returning to lay-up. Ships at anchor periodically need to berth to take onboard fuel, food, provisions and other supplies. Some inter-ship crew transfers at sea are being made, outside port limits. With the resumption of “normal” cruising looking very uncertain in many countries in the near future, more cruise ships are likely to move to “cold” lay-up until the situation becomes clearer, whilst others go into shipyards for overhauls and surveys. Many cruise ships have been in lay-up for over a year, as the initial “pause” has been continually extended due to more Covid-19 outbreaks, and many financial assumptions made on the expectation of an initial two-months lockdown have needed reviewing. This has resulted in many recent sales of older ships, and limited cruising in the Mediterranean and Europe, where these areas are being affected by sporadic outbreaks in Covid-19 infections. The largest concentration of laid-up cruise ships is on the Bahamas Banks (east of Miami and south of Freeport) A large number of cruise ships are anchored off the south coast of England, west of Southampton. Another large group are anchored in the South China Sea, NE of Singapore.
