Leonardo — Reagan Elementary School Leonardo has shown a love of learning from an early age. He relies on CISDR to make sure he stays on track in school, and he is glad that CISDR makes learning fun. He says, “I like coming to CISDR. I like playing number bingo and practic- ing the alphabet with my friends. ”

CISDR works with vulnerable students during their entire school career, from elementary school through high school. From an early age, CISDR works one-on- one with students like Leonardo all day and every day, before the bell and beyond, so they establish a clear path to graduation. Leonardo shows that he is already looking to the future when he says, “I want to learn. I want to be a policeman!”

Tykia — Forest Meadow Junior High School Tykia is a smart student who has been working with CISDR to improve her attendance and behavior issues in school. Tykia points out that she was introduced to CISDR as a result of a disciplinary issue: “I was surprised to nd out about CISDR after I was sent to in-school suspension. CISDR has helped me with tutoring and my anger management. They helped me talk about my feelings, and they helped mewith my behavior and my attendance. I even received a commended performance on my Social Studies TAKS.” Tykia is now motivated to get an education because of CISDR. She also has a better understanding of how she will achieve her hopes and dreams. She says, “Education is really important. If you don’t have it you won’t have a good job, and I don’t want to be broke. I want to be a chef when I’m older because I’ve been cooking since I was eight.”

Leslie — Plano East Senior High School Leslie was recommended to CISDR during her junior year at Plano East High School. She was dealing with family issues at home that left her struggling at school. She was living with her brother and father after her mother had moved out, and she was also trying to support her son as a new teen mother. At school, Leslie’s grades were dropping, and she was struggling with attendance issues. How- ever, with CISDR’s help she was able to complete her junior year on track. During her senior year, Leslie was a completely different student. Through the individualized support of CISDR, she worked hard to improve her grades. She stopped having attendance issues, and she also began working on her relationship with her mother again. Leslie graduated from Plano East High School in May of 2012, and she is now enrolled at . “CISDR services are reviewed each year and developed in collaboration with the school needs and administration. CIS plans have also been more than adequate and very much appreciated. The risk of a cut in funding or lack of support for the CIS program would leave a very large void on our campus.”

GEMS (Girls Exploring Math and Science) The Girls Exploring Math and Science (GEMS) program continued to make a signicant impact in the lives of middle school girls this year. GEMS helped students increase their condence and enthusiasm in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) academic areas through collaborative, hands- on learning activities. A total of 150 young ladies from Frankford Middle School in Plano ISD, Bowie Middle School in Irving ISD, Lancaster Middle School in Lancaster ISD, Ann Richards Middle School and Thomas J. Rusk A parent participating in Ketchup Saturdays Middle School in Dallas ISD and Lamar Middle School in Irving ISD were recommended to be GEMS members. For instance, girls participated in a guided tour of Hawaiian Falls during learning activities led by CISDR professionals with expertise in math, science, the summer to help them understand measurements, engineering and and language arts. The alternative learning environment helped bolster the hydraulics. Students were also introduced to possible careers that require students’ creativity, and the provision of transportation and lunch kept the advanced skills in science and math and had the opportunity to meet female children focused and parents assured. Many thanks to Capital One! CISDR completed the 3rd and nal year of the AmeriCorps grant, providing community-driven support at 15 school campuses in Dallas, Richardson, KETCHUP Saturdays Irving, Carrollton-Farmers Branch, Midlothian and Commerce ISDs. KETCHUP Saturdays was originally designed by CISDR to offer a dynamic CISDR’s AmeriCorps members proved to be dedicated adults with a passion way for students to “catch up” in certain school subjects while increasing for service and their community. Moreover, 6 members remained on board by applying to become full-time CISDR professional staff. Over the course of the 3 year grant, the AmeriCorps program increased the CISDR community footprint, taught students about the importance of giving back, and engaged parents in a new way. This group of AmeriCorps innovators truly enhanced the CISDR experience! United Way: Destination Graduation In partnership with the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, CISDR continued to implement the Destination Graduation (UWDG) program this year to help high school students establish a solid foundation for graduation and college and career success. UWDG helped strengthen college preparation activities, parental involvement and career exploration as a part of CISDR’s core campus-based support system. In 2011-2012, CISDR was awarded the UWDG grant to increase services beyond the initial campus at Plano East Senior High to include Lincoln High School, Samuell High School and Thomas Jefferson High School in Dallas ISD, North Mesquite High GEMS students designing a waterslide School and West Mesquite High School in Mesquite ISD and McMillen High School and Williams High School and in Plano ISD. The Communities In Schools Dallas Region (CISDR) Endowment (Foundation) was established in September 2003 with an initial gift of $1 million pledged by Alon USA for the specic purpose of providing nancial support and long-term stability to CISDR. Helping to ensure CISDR Endowment President Jeff Morris the sponsorship of one child at a time for future generations, this remarkable gift and the endowment it has formed serve as a catalyst for additional support. The CISDR Endowment helps maintain initiatives already in place while adding to the infrastructure to reach more schoolchildren who are still in need of support. Challenging economic times remind us to make philanthropic choices with the greatest care. While economic realities cannot be ignored, The CISDR Endowment solicits gifts from a variety of sources. CISDR congratulates Nancy and Peter Huff their support in successfully completing the McKinney Challenge! In light of state budget cuts, the Huffs initiated the McKinney Challenge to encourage the citizens and businesses of McKinney to support struggling students in their community. Over the past 2 years, the McKinney Challenge has raised a total of $82,350! In these challenging economic times when needs are so great, this funding will forever change the lives of school children throughout McKinney. CISDR sincerely thanks the Huffs and Nancy and Peter Huff all those who participated in the McKinney Challenge for their generous support. 2011-12 By the Numbers
