NOTES OF THE NIGHT

The Flyers have reclaimed the top spot in the league’s faceoff rankings at 55.3 percent as a team on the year after spending a couple weeks right behind St. Louis. Scott Laughton leads the team at 62.5 percent, while Jordan Weal is second at 59.1. They’re followed by Claude Giroux at 58.5, Nolan Patrick at 55.8, Jori Lehtera at 55.3, and Sean Couturier at 54.1. There were 146 players in the NHL that had taken 85 or more faceoffs this season entering last night’s games; among that group, Laughton leads the league, and three other Flyers are in the top 20 – Weal is fifth, Giroux is tied for 7th, and Patrick is 20th.

Couturier is 75.9 percent (22-for-29) on power play faceoffs, which is the best in the league among anyone who has taken at least five power play faceoffs.

Giroux is fourth in overall power play faceoffs taken with 75, and is 66.7 percent in that situation. On the shorthanded side, Giroux has taken 40 faceoffs and is 64.9 percent. He is the only player in the NHL to have taken 40 or more power play faceoffs and 20 or more shorthanded faceoffs and sit above 60 percent in both situations.

Giroux comes into tonight’s game with 480 assists, which ties him with Brian Propp for second in franchise history. With his next assist, he will trail only Bobby Clarke (852) in the category. So far this season, Giroux has moved into fourth place in franchise history in games played (currently 758) and in overall points (currently 701). In both categories, Giroux trails only Clarke, Bill Barber and Propp. With 31 more games this year, Giroux can pass Propp for third in that category.

Ivan Provorov is averaging 24:53 of ice time per game, which is 12th in the NHL.

Scott Laughton has six goals on the year, all of which are at even-strength. Through 21 games, he’s four short of his career high of 10 goals set in 81 games last season, and is three short of his career high of nine even-strength goals also set last year.
