  • Print Bugging at Key TUT Offices Confirmed Business Day 08-09
Print Bugging at key TUT offices confirmed Business Day 08-09-2011 Karl Gernetzky The bugging was discovered by newly appointed administrator Prof Themba Mosia as TUT confirms that a top official has been suspended THE offices of senior management at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) had been bugged, acting director-general of the Department of Higher Education and Training Gwebinkundla Qonde confirmed. The bugging was discovered by newly appointed administrator Prof Themba Mosia, Mr Qonde said . He was responding yesterday to allegations made by the Democratic Alliance (DA) on Tuesday that offices of top management may have been placed under surveillance during the tenure of the former vice- chancellor, Prof Johnny Molefe. This also comes as TUT confirmed yesterday that a top official had been suspended . DA higher education spokeswoman Junita Kloppers-Lourens said on Tuesday the bugging of offices was illegal in terms of the law and that the party would request a criminal investigation. TUT was placed under administration last month by the Department of Higher Education and Training two weeks after the university council appointed Prof Molefe as vice-chancellor despite allegations that he had knowingly used a questionable doctorate when he applied for the post. The university council was adamant that while he was unaware the doctorate was unaccredited, he was the best candidate for the position, and had been running the university as vice-chancellor for more than a year. Despite confirming that the surveillance had taken place, Mr Qonde criticised the DA, saying its allegations were "opportunistic," and that the party should "refrain from any attempt at political interference in the work of TUT or any other institution of learning".

  • Revised Final Masters Thesis Caitlin Lesczynski 1946040
Bend it Like Banyana Banyana: Gender, Empowerment and Equality in South Africa Through the Lens of Soccer Caitlin Rose Lesczynski A thesis submitted to the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. Johannesburg, 2020 ABSTRACT Women and girls participating in sports surged around the world in the 1970s and 1980s in response to shifting attitudes on gender norms and equality. While recreational and professional sports participation is seen as a positive opportunity for female empowerment, the sports realm can also be a site for reproducing discriminatory gender norms, structural inequalities and unequal power dynamics from wider society. The primary purpose of this thesis is to use the case-study of women’s soccer in South Africa to identify and understand the societal phenomena that negatively affect women and girls’ sports participation and experience. Encouragingly, a handful of dedicated social scientists produced pioneering scholarly analysis of women’s soccer in South Africa; however, there is a dearth of contemporary journalism and longform, creative non-fiction writing on the topic. Rather than take the form of a traditional academic research report, this thesis combines factual exposition and journalistic storytelling to shed light on the subject matter in an accessible and engaging style. The final thesis comprises two parts: (Part One) a Method Document that reviews the existing literature and presents a history of the global-local development of women’s soccer; and (Part Two) a Longform Narrative that imitates the style of a publishable piece of magazine journalism.
