Print Bugging at key TUT offices confirmed Business Day 08-09-2011 Karl Gernetzky The bugging was discovered by newly appointed administrator Prof Themba Mosia as TUT confirms that a top official has been suspended THE offices of senior management at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) had been bugged, acting director-general of the Department of Higher Education and Training Gwebinkundla Qonde confirmed. The bugging was discovered by newly appointed administrator Prof Themba Mosia, Mr Qonde said . He was responding yesterday to allegations made by the Democratic Alliance (DA) on Tuesday that offices of top management may have been placed under surveillance during the tenure of the former vice- chancellor, Prof Johnny Molefe. This also comes as TUT confirmed yesterday that a top official had been suspended . DA higher education spokeswoman Junita Kloppers-Lourens said on Tuesday the bugging of offices was illegal in terms of the law and that the party would request a criminal investigation. TUT was placed under administration last month by the Department of Higher Education and Training two weeks after the university council appointed Prof Molefe as vice-chancellor despite allegations that he had knowingly used a questionable doctorate when he applied for the post. The university council was adamant that while he was unaware the doctorate was unaccredited, he was the best candidate for the position, and had been running the university as vice-chancellor for more than a year. Despite confirming that the surveillance had taken place, Mr Qonde criticised the DA, saying its allegations were "opportunistic," and that the party should "refrain from any attempt at political interference in the work of TUT or any other institution of learning". Mr Qonde said the department was pleased with the work being done by Prof Mosia, who had provided stability and a calm environment for students at TUT . TUT yesterday confirmed that its director of corporate affairs and marketing, Moatlhodi Dilotsotlhe , had been suspended pending a probe into his conduct. University spokeswoman Willa de Ruyter would not elaborate. She said Prof Mosia did not want to prejudice Mr Dilotsotlhe. "At the moment we can only confirm his suspension. Normal university policies and procedures will apply to bring this matter to its logical conclusion," she said. Last month, Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande said the actions by the university council had compromised the academic integrity and reputation of the university and SA’s higher education system. In addition to questions over Prof Molefe’s suitability, there was speculation about the involvement of Prof Molefe in illicit commercial developments, particularly the R2bn Ga-Rankuwa University town. The project was shrouded in secrecy, ostensibly to avoid speculative land buying. Ms Kloppers-Lourens last week alleged that TUT’s former chief financial officer, Doeke Tromp, was dismissed shortly after he refused to pay out R133m from the university’s reserve fund as initial capital for the project. Prof Molefe apparently obtained a doctorate in business administration from St George University International in the Bahamas. The South African Qualifications Authority initially recognised the degree and issued an evaluation certificate. However, it revoked this on realising the degree was not from St George’s University, an internationally recognised institution based in Grenada. Mr Nzimande has promised that the law will be allowed to take its course at TUT. "If we find there have been problems or irregularities we will act in terms of the law," he said last month. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Another head on the block at TUT News 24 – 07/09/2011 Pretoria - A senior official at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has been suspended pending a probe into his conduct, the university said on Wednesday. TUT director of corporate affairs and marketing Moathlodi Dilotsotlhe was suspended with immediate effect on Tuesday by the university's new administrator Professor Themba Mosia, said spokesperson Willa de Ruyter. De Ruyter would not elaborate. She said Mosia did not want to prejudice Dilotsotlhe. "At the moment we can only confirm his suspension. Normal university policies and procedures will apply to bring this matter to its logical conclusion," she said. Dilotsotlhe could into be reached for comment. Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande recently placed the institution under administration. He was reacting to allegations that Professor Johnny Molefe, who served as vice chancellor for two weeks, used a revoked evaluation certificate when applying for the post. Nzimande appointed Mosia as an administrator, to replace the university's council and Molefe. At the time, Nzimande said the debacle had compromised the academic integrity and reputation of the university and the country's higher education system. __________________________________________________________________________________ TUT director gets the boot over e-mail PRETORIA NEWS – 08/09/2011 MOGOMOTSI MAGOME A SENIOR Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) official has been suspended by administrator Professor Themba Mosia as controversy continues to plague the university. The varsity confirmed that TUT's director of corporate affairs and marketing, Moatlhodi Dilotsotlhe, had been suspended pending a probe into his conduct. Spokeswoman Willa de Ruyter could not confirm why Dilotsotlhe had been suspended, but the Pretoria News has learnt the suspension is related to an unauthorised e-mail he sent to staff last week. The newspaper is in possession of an e-mail believed to have been distributed by Dilotsotlhe on behalf of Mosia in which he introduced him to the TUT community The e-mail lists the administrator's priorities and duties during his tenure, most of which were derived from the notice gazetted by Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande announcing Mosia's appointment. The e-mail was later retracted by the directorate of corporate affairs and marketing, and staff' were asked to disregard its contents. "Mr Dilotsotlhe has been suspended with immediate effect pending an investigation. Normal university policies and procedures will apply," said De Ruyter. Dilotsotlhe refused to comment last night His suspension comes after former deputy vice-chancellor Professor Johnny Molefe was placed on compulsory leave after his appointment was stopped by Nzimande. He got the job despite his St George University International doctorate declared invalid by the SA Qualification Authority. Mnr. Moathlodi Dilosotlhe was die laaste paar maande, terwyl die TUT in omstredenheid gedompel is, die enigste persoon wat navrae oor die raad of prof. Johnny Molefe, geskorste rektor van die universiteit, beantwoord het. Me. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Senior varsity official suspended, probe pending THE NEW AGE – 08/09/2011 A SENIOR official at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has been suspended pending a probe into his conduct, the university said yesterday.
