ABSTRACT The purpose of this directory is to provide a national listing of marine science teachers in precollege education. With the directory, teachers can identify others who share similar interests. The introduction explains the apparent need for such a directory and the steps taken to produce it. The directory contains the names of teachers who responded to the authors of the project and who gave approval to being listed. It also contains some information about what individual teachers are doing in their marine science programs. The imformation is coded and an explanation of same is included. the directory is arranged in two parts. Part 1is a listing of marine science teachers, K-12. Part 2 is an additional list of marine science education spcialists, coordinators, consultants, and others who could be of help to schools which want to establish a marine science education program. Qo This publication has been sponsored by NOAA Office of Sea Grant, Department of Commerce. r- 0 tu INTRODUCTION

The development of marine science programs in high schools, middle, and elementary schools is a trend that has become very evident during the past few years. While the exact number of marine science

programs is not known, it is likely in excess of 1, OOP.The number of

programs seems to have an annual increase of about 20 percent.

The motivation behind marine science programs varies con-

siderably.Undoubtedly the trend is closely related to the current ecology-

environment renaissance. In most cases, the programs have been developed

by individual teachers who are deeply interested in the marine environment

and who wish to share their interest and enthusiasm with their students.

Many students are already interested in marine science, partly because

of the exposure given to the marine environment in television and motion

pictures.

The purpose of this directory is to provide a national listing of marine science teachers in pre-college education. With the directory, teachers can identify others who share similar interests. They can corres- pond with teachers in distant areas to share ideas, experiences, and teaching materials.

1 About four years ago we had begun keeping a file containing the names and addresses of marine science teachers in many states.

In time our records grew large enough to consider publishing a directory of pre-college marine science education. We wanted the directory to list teachers who were actually teaching in a marine scielce program, rather than those teachers merely interested in marine affairs.

It occurred to us that some teachers might not want to be listed in any directory without their prior knowledge and permission. Thus in the fall of 1972, we sent a registration form to the several hundred teachers listed in our marine science education files. We also sent letters to several hundreds of school science supervisors and to others

,vho could help us identify additional names for the directory. The result is this publication containing the names of teachers who responded to our correspondence and who gave approval to their being listed.

The directory also contains some information about what individual teachers are doing in their marine science programs. This information is coded in a series of numbers appearing below the names and addresses of the teachers. This code is explained on page 4 . We realize that the directory is far from complete and that many marine science teachers were not identified and contacted. For these omissions, we apologize. We hope that the publication of this directory will help us discover many more marine science teachers. We also

2 plan to publish an enlarged and more nearly complete edition of the directory during the spring of 1974.Teachers who wish to be included in the 1971 edition should notify us of their desire.

This directory is arranged in two parts.Part I is a listing of marine science teachers, K-12.Part II is an additional list of marine science education specialists, coordinators, consultants, and others who could be of help to schools which want to establish a marine science education program. Part II also contains a few teachers whose registration forms arrived late.

We wish to express our gratitude to the following people who were especially helpful in this endeavor: Dr. Ron Linsky of the University of Southern California; Dr. Howard M. Weiss of Project Oceanology,

Pawcatuck, Conn. ;Dr. Thayer Shafer of the University of Rhode Island; Mr. John Crowley of the Massachusetts Marine Educators; Mr. Roger

Anderson of A&M University; Mr. Henry Santana of the Corpus

Christi (Texas) Public Schools; Dr. Donald E. Giles and Dr. Vicki J. Osis, both of the Marine Science Center, Oregon State Universicy; Mr.

Kjell Schroder of the North Kitsap Marine Environmental Center, Poulsbo,

Washington; Mr. Will Hon of the Newfound Harbor Marine Institute, Big Pine Key, Florida; Mrs. Jean Gazaway and Mrs. Joan Myers, both of

Louisiana State University, who helped with the great volume of corres- pondence.
