This sarimbit (couple) dolls bear the weight of Javanese local wisdom. Jarit and kebaya worn by Simbok and Bapak are assembled in such a way to fit each other, a reminder that husband and wife shall share their roles and support each other. Upon the gajih knitwork, Simbok and Bapak smile broadly, radiating happiness and joy. Gajih fibers are obtained from the gebang (Corypha utan) young unopened leaves. The epidermis of these 70-80 cm long leaves are taken out, boiled with natural dyes, and dried. The next step is joining the fibers into long yarns and knit them up to shape a bag. The colorful wool yarns are finally applied to make this art pleasant to look at and carry. Simbok literally means mother, but now it refers to rural Javanese women who usually wear traditional clothes. In millennial style, simbok is enjoying tulip garden, carrying her pet, or playing with her kids. In this series, Natlovers try to remind us the strength and wisdom of women who preserve their cultural identity. It would have eased my learning curve." David "This book is simply...wow." Carol "The book takes out a rather complex culture and simplifies it by bringing out important aspects and explaining them. This sets it apart from the other travel books." Roger "Light and entertaining reading with serious substance nonetheless." Anna The neighborhood Enjoying Indonesia 2021 This is the inside perspective you’ll learn in this book: “We walk slowly, not just to enjoy the scenery or the shop windows, but because walking slowly is less tiring. Foreigners always walk too fast for a tropical climate. For us it’s hard to understand why.” “Bakso is so popular that it is also vended from pushcarts making their way through the neighborhoods. Here, on an island less than 150 kilometres wide and only 80 kilometres from north to south, day-to-day life is layered in ceremony and festival, a parade of activities rooted among the island’s 3.5 million inhabitants. The joy of Bali is that daily life is just as memorable for its visitors. The island’s complex and endlessly renewing culture offers new experiences from morning to evening – from temple ceremonies and gamelan performances, to village festivals and palace theatre. Located in the cultural heart of Bali, Amandari will guide you to encounter the island’s beguiling face and discover its soul. In a country of rivers and volcanic mountains, tropical forest, terraced rice fields, sea vistas and more, there is no shortage of activities to get close to the land, its people and their culture. To help you get there, we have carefully curated our Amandari Experience Guide.
