The distinction of its thematic material, and its use in cyclical form, is reinforced by an ultimately victorious motto theme. The F major Quartet was written later, but remained unfinished, but it too is a fertile creation with a strong dance profile. Both works are heard in Alf Årdal’s imaginative arrangements for string orchestra. Arne Nordheim, Norway’s leading living composer, wrote Rendezvous as a quartet but expanded it in 1986. It is an intense, moving, and beautifully crafted work. Stephan Barratt-Due has been artistic director of the Barratt Due Institute of Music since 1985, a conservatory in Oslo founded in 1927 by his grandparents and now one of the main educational institutions of music in Norway. Barratt-Due is among the leading violin professors in Scandinavia, and under his leadership the Oslo Camerata has become increasingly in demand both nationally and internationally.

    Friday 17th October 2014 2-5PM Britten Theatre Cello Masterclass with Julian Lloyd Webber Supported by the Georg and Emily von Opel Foundation Widely regarded as one of the most creative musicians of his generation and now leading England’s In Harmony programme, Julian Lloyd Webber won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music when he was sixteen and completed his studies in Geneva with the renowned French cellist, Pierre Fournier. Since then he has collaborated with an extraordinary array of musicians from Yehudi Menuhin, Lorin Maazel, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Georg Solti to Elton John and Stephane Grappelli. Julian has won numerous awards for his services to music, including the Crystal Award (presented at the World Economic Forum in 1998) and the Classic FM Red Award in 2005. In 1994 he was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Music. As leader of In Harmony, the British Government's new music programme, Julian is working to promote personal and community development in some of England's most deprived areas, through orchestral-based learning and musical experiences. Julian has made many outstanding recordings including his Brit- Award winning Elgar Concerto conducted by Yehudi Menuhin (chosen as the finest ever version by BBC Music Magazine) the Dvorák Concerto with Vaclav Neumann and the Czech Philharmonic, Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations with the London Symphony under Maxim Shostakovich and a coupling of Britten’s Cello Symphony and Walton’s Concerto with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, which was described by Gramophone magazine as “beyond any rival”.

He has given the Jiaxin Cheng graduated from Shanghai Conservatory of Music, China, in 1997. She premières of more than fifty new works for cello and has inspired new was already giving performances with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra but left compositions from composers as diverse as Malcolm Arnold and Joaquín China for further studies in New Zealand where she received her Master’s Degree at Rodrigo to James MacMillan and Philip Glass. While in New Zealand Jiaxin was principal cello of his Brit-Award winning Elgar Concerto conducted by Yehudi Menuhin (chosen the Auckland Chamber Orchestra and played regularly with both the Auckland as the finest ever version by BBC Music Magazine), the Delius Concerto with Philharmonia Orchestra and New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. With the Auckland Vernon Handley and the Philharmonia, the Dvořák Concerto with Václav Symphony Orchestra she performed cello concertos by Dvořák, Elgar and Lalo. Jiaxin Neumann and the Czech Philharmonic, Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations with was also a founding member of the Aroha String Quartet. Since moving to London in the London Symphony under Maxim Shostakovich and a coupling of Britten’s 2007 she has performed as a soloist at the Royal Festival Hall and broadcast for BBC Cello Symphony and Walton’s Concerto with Sir Neville Marriner and the Radio 3. Jiaxin is married to fellow cellist Julian Lloyd Webber.
