sustainability Article An Expert-Based Assessment Model for Evaluating Habitat Suitability of Pond-Breeding Amphibians Shin-Ruoh Juang 1, Szu-Hung Chen 2 and Chen-Fa Wu 1,* 1 Department of Horticulture, National Chung Hsing University, Taichung City 402, Taiwan; [email protected] 2 Department of Ecosystem Science & Management, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX 77843, USA; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel./Fax: +886-4-2285-9125 Academic Editor: Iain Gordon Received: 8 November 2016; Accepted: 10 February 2017; Published: 16 February 2017 Abstract: Farm ponds are important habitats for amphibians, birds, and other wildlife. In Taiwan, artificial ponds were originally created on farmlands for irrigation purposes and the needs of the domestic water supply. Although pond creation is a typical farming practice, it also provides habitats for pond-breeding amphibians. Thus, it is essential to understand the current status of habitats and their vulnerability regarding urgent conservation needs for target species. Günther’s frog (Hylarana guentheri), a pond-breeding amphibian, has a high sensitivity towards surrounding environmental changes, and can be used as an indicator species to assess habitat suitability. The purpose of this study is to establish a systematic framework to assess the habitat suitability of pond-breeding amphibians by using Günther’s frog as a pilot-study species. First, we collected frog survey data from Chiayi, Taiwan, from winter 2013 to spring 2015, and investigated the present status of the environmental conditions around the ponds. Next, expert questionnaires and the fuzzy Delphi method were applied to establish the hierarchical evaluation criteria regarding the habitat suitability assessment.

  • Differences Between Local Residents' and Visitors' Environmental
Differences between Local Residents’ and Visitors’ Environmental Per- ception of Landscape Change of Rural Communities in Taiwan Chun-Wei Tsou*, Sheng-Jung Ou *Department of Landscape Architecture, Tunghai University; No.1727, Sec. 4, Taiwan Boulevard, Taichung 40704, Taiwan; +886.4.2359.0417, [email protected] Abstract Rural community development on landscape environment has become a hot issue in making rural travel attractions and this development phenomenon is getting popular in Taiwan. Visitors’ environmental per- ception on rural landscape environment would affect their behavior, impressions, and willingness-to-re- turn about that rural area. Therefore, residents and visitors who travelled in the top ten rural villages of Taiwan elected in 2007 were subjects in this research in order to analyze differences between local resi- dents’ and visitors’ environmental perception of landscape change of rural communities. Three factors, perception on rural environmental change, perception on rural environmental characteristic, and percep- tion on life emotion about rural environment, were extracted after exploratory factor analysis was done on acceptability of perception on community landscape environment of all subjects. The result of this research could act as references for management of landscape environment in developing rural commu- nities. It is expected that numerous difference could be avoided between development goals of rural communities and visitors’ perception on landscape environment. • Memorial Park for Women Laborers”: Gender, Religion, and the Politics of Memory in Taiwan’S Urban Renewal
Journal of Archaeology and Anthropology‧75:37-70‧2011 From the “Twenty-five Ladies’ Tomb” to a “Memorial Park for Women Laborers”: Gender, Religion, and the Politics of Memory in Taiwan’s Urban Renewal Anru Lee∗ and Wen-hui Anna Tang** ABSTRACT This essay looks at the recent renovation of the Twenty-five Ladies’ Tomb, and examines the politics of the feminist movements and the politics of memory as they are expressed through different meanings of female ghosts, in southern Taiwan. People who were involved in the renovation process included the families of the deceased “twenty-five maidens,” the Kaohsiung city government, and feminist groups in Kaohsiung and elsewhere in Taiwan – most notably the Kaohsiung Association for the Promotion of Women’s Rights – all of whom had different considerations and therefore diverse expectations regarding the future and purpose of the tomb. In Specters of Marx (2006), Derrida uses the idea of “specters” and “haunting” as consequences of historical injustice and tragedy metaphorically but powerfully. These two elements come together in our essay as well. However, the “ghosts” in our accounts are more literally ghosts with whom some (if not all) of our ethnographic subjects interact. They appear, express their sorrow, and demonstrate their grievances. The reestablishment of peace and order essential to residents of both the living world and the afterlife thus hinges upon mutual understanding and close collaboration between them. Yet, as meanings are constantly contested, so is the nature of the deceased’s requests. The different interpretations that the (living) socio-political forces give to the deceased’s needs open up new terrains of contestation for the memory of the past and the rights and obligations at the present.

  • Diagnosability and Description of a New Subspecies of Indo-Pacific
Wang et al. Zoological Studies (2015) 54:36 DOI 10.1186/s40555-015-0115-x RESEARCH Open Access Diagnosability and description of a new subspecies of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin, Sousa chinensis (Osbeck, 1765), from the Taiwan Strait John Y Wang1,2,3*, Shih Chu Yang4 and Samuel K Hung5 Abstract Background: Subspecies recognition can affect how people (scientists and non-scientists alike) view organisms and thus has important implications for research on, as well as the conservation of, these entities. Recently, a small group of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins was discovered inhabiting the waters off central western Taiwan. This geographically isolated population possesses pigmentation patterns that are subtly, but noticeably, different from their nearest conspecifics in the neighbouring waters of the Jiulong River Estuary and Pearl River Estuary of mainland China. Due to this population’s low and declining numbers and the numerous threats it faces, it was assessed as critically endangered by the Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The purpose of this study is to examine the degree of differentiation of the Taiwanese population to determine if subspecies recognition is warranted. Results: Analysis of the degree of differentiation in pigmentation patterns revealed nearly non-overlapping distributions between dolphins from Taiwanese waters and those from the Jiulong River + Pearl River estuaries of mainland China (the nearest known populations). The Taiwanese dolphins were clearly diagnosable from those of the Jiulong River + Pearl River estuaries under the most commonly accepted ‘75% rule’ for subspecies delimitation (with 94% of one group being separable from 99+% of the other).

The Nationalist Party first defined the Incident as a rebellion by pro-Japanese forces and communist saboteurs. As the enemy of the Nationalist Party in China’s Civil War (1946-1949), the Chinese Communist Party initially interpreted the Incident as a Taiwanese fight for political autonomy in the party’s wartime propaganda, and then reinterpreted the event as an anti-Nationalist uprising under its own leadership.
