Just one of many commemorations around the World to mark one hundred years since the end of The Great War. Another major piece of art, formed a focal point as the UK commemorated 100 years since the end of the First World War. The ‘Shrouds of the Somme’ brought home the sheer scale of human sacrifice in the battle that came to epitomize the bloodshed of the 1914-18 war – the Battle of the Somme. Artist Rob Heard hand stitched and bound calico shrouds for 72,396 figures representing British Commonwealth servicemen killed at the Somme who have no known grave, many of whose bodies were never recovered and whose names are engraved on the Thiepval Memorial. Each figure of a human form, was individually shaped, shrouded and made to a name. They were laid out shoulder to shoulder in hundreds of rows to mark the Centenary of Armistice Day at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from 8-18th November 2018 filling an area of over 4000 square metres. -

Photo: Geoff Shaw Royal Navy Corsair comes in fast and low. There were at least four Corsairs at Defford from 1944, for trials with the Royal Naval section at Defford. In this edition of ‘Contact!’ we tell the story of Lt Cdr ‘Loopy’ Dunworth DSC, who was Officer Commanding the Naval Section at Defford 1951-1953. A popular and eccentric figure, he stayed on at Defford as a test pilot with Boulton Paul (see ‘Contact!’ no. 123, January 2019), at Defford after leaving the Navy. .2. BPA Pilot 1953-1961 By Les Whitehouse, with additional material from Dennis Williams and overall editing by the editor Born in Manchester 5/8/1921 Geoff Dunworth qualified as a Research Chemist for ICI but in Sept 1940 he volunteered to be aircrew with the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy, as an Observer. From RNAS Arbroath, he was posted to 817 Squadron aboard HMS Victorious, August 1941, which was part of the replacements for aircraft losses over Petsamo and Kirkenes, Norway in July. Escort of the Arctic convoys to Archangel (Operation Dervish) and then the escort of HMS Argus returning from Murmansk followed. Victorious launched air attacks, on targets in Norway, through to October 1941. L/A Geoff Dunworth along with gunner L/A Davies were teamed up with S/L Raymond. -

Abstract This thesis examines a small component of the Australian Navy, the Fleet Air Arm. Naval aviators have been contributing to Australian military history since 1914 but they remain relatively unheard of in the wider community and in some instances, in Australian military circles. Aviation within the maritime environment was, and remains, a versatile weapon in any modern navy but the struggle to initiate an aviation branch within the Royal Australian Navy was a protracted one. Finally coming into existence in 1947, the Australian Fleet Air Arm operated from the largest of all naval vessels in the post battle ship era; aircraft carriers. HMAS Albatross, Sydney, Vengeance and Melbourne carried, operated and fully maintained various fixed-wing aircraft and the naval personnel needed for operational deployments until 1982. These deployments included contributions to national and multinational combat, peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. With the Australian government’s decision not to replace the last of the aging aircraft carriers, HMAS Melbourne, in 1982, the survival of the Australian Fleet Air Arm, and its highly trained personnel, was in grave doubt. This was a major turning point for Australian Naval Aviation; these versatile flyers and the maintenance and technical crews who supported them retrained on rotary aircraft, or helicopters, and adapted to flight operations utilising small compact ships. -

FLoB is a simple rule set to start with but if you are going to play with 8 players each with a squadron of 6 ship- of-the-line you need to get through the turns rapidly. I have designed a couple of play aids and a suitable play sheet. The proof is in the outcomes. People even enjoy the Nile or Copenhagen”. “I have run quite a few map based WW2 games including carrier actions and other search based games. They went down well. I still have some of that stuff 20 plus years later”. Sounds good, if only I could think of what FLob is the abbreviation for. -

The site is located in Church Bay, Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland, at latitude 55º 17.1500′ N, longitude 06° 12.4036′ W (WGS 84). The work was undertaken as part of the Contract for Archaeological Services in Relation to the Protection of Wrecks Act (1973). Work was conducted in accordance with a brief that required WA to locate archaeological material, provide an accurate location for the wreck, determine the extent of the seabed remains, identify and characterise the main elements of the site and assess the remains against the non-statutory criteria for designation. Diving operations took place between 28th July and 5th August 2006. In addition to the diver assessment a limited desk-based assessment has been undertaken in order to assist with the interpretation and reporting of the wreck. -

By Jim (the Barn) Payne © Jim Payne and West Sussex County Council 1 West Sussex & the Great War Project www.westsussexpast.org.uk When most people, myself included, begin to look at the Great War, we tend to read of the great land battles. Ypres, Gallipoli, Verdun or the Somme. Although most will know of the great battles at sea, they do not feature high in the history books in comparison, neither is information so readily available. When I started to research the War Memorial Plaque in St. Mary’s Church Yapton, I hadn’t given a lot of thought to the sailors that had died. We have seven named on the memorial, six of who’m were stokers. This is signified by the prefix K on their service numbers. So, are stokers “just fella’s that threw coal into a furnace? All our boys were regular servicemen, having joined up several years prior to the start of the war. Once they had completed their initial training, parade drill, naval history, housekeeping and rifle drill, they were assigned to His Majesty’s Ship (HMS) Victory II. Victory was a land based training establishment for stokers and engine artificers, based in Portsmouth. In 1915, Victory was transferred to Crystal Palace South London, and re-located to Portsmouth at the end of the war. Here they would have to study the “Stokers Manual” a one hundred page book setting out the basics of Boilers, Furnaces, Engines, Turbines and the registering of Temperature, Steam, Oil and Water gauges. -

Family disembark to return to London. 2.35 p.m. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, 6.30 p.m. Her Majesty The Queen holds a Sherry Party on Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret and board HMS Surprise. other members of the Royal Family arrive by 8.30 p.m. Her Majesty The Queens dines on board train and embark in HMS Surprise.
