Cartmell Hall to remain closed until Nov. 4 **UPDATED 11/01/08 AT 4:15 P.M.** Cartmell Hall will remain closed to residents until Tuesday, Nov. 4. Students who have traveled home for the weekend and are not within a convenient commuting distance will be excused from classes on Monday, Nov. 3. Those Cartmell residents who have been relocated to Waterfield Hall or have made other temporary arrangements are asked to attend Monday classes as scheduled. There will be no office hours or classes on Tuesday, Nov. 4 in observation of the national election. Residents of Cartmell Hall may return to the hall after 3 p.m. on Tuesday. If the situation has not been resolved, students will be provided other short-term housing arrangements and will be expected to return to classes as scheduled on Wednesday, Nov. 5. Excused absence information applies only to current Cartmell Hall residents. All other MSU students need to attend class as usual. For the latest updates on Cartmell Hall, please monitor the MSU homepage at www.moreheadstate.edu . Additional information is available by calling the MSUPD at (606) 783-2035. Cartmell Hall closed, due to broken steam pipe A broken steam pipe in Morehead State University's Cartmell Hall on Friday, Oct. 31, at approximately 11:30 p.m., caused electrical outage and the closing of the building until damages can be assessed, repairs made, and it is safe to move students back into the residence hall. Waterfield Hall has been opened to accommodate students on a temporary basis. Students who live in the Morehead area are encouraged to return to their homes for the weekend. -

BILL LOWE AND THE MUSIC OF EASTERN APPALACHIA A Thesis Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts History by Heidi Baldwin McKee May 2013 Accepted by: Dr. Paul Anderson, Committee Chair Dr. Rod Andrew Dr. Alan Grubb ABSTRACT As the twentieth century progressed with radio and communications technology, the culture of the Appalachian mountains became an unexplored resource of vast cultural proportions. The Old Regular Baptist faith of the mountains had influenced creative thinkers in the area for generations, and the coming of settlement schools brought secular evaluation from outside the culture. As the people living in the mountains began to understand the uniqueness of their musical heritage, radio technology was becoming available on a much larger scale than ever before. Singers and songwriters from the mountains found eager audiences on a national level. One of these musicians was Bill Lowe, of Pike County, Kentucky. His early experiences with music clashed with his family’s belief system and he found himself caught up in the contradictions of southern spirituality. -

University Communications Pauline Young, Director News www .moreheadstate.edu Morehead State University UPO Box 1100 Morehead, KY 40351-1689 (606) 783-2030 Feb. 1, 2002 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MOREHEAD, Ky.---Whether its Bluegrass, Celtic or folk, music lovers may enjoy it all at Morehead State University's "Americana Crossroads Live" on Friday, Feb. 22, in Duncan Recital Hall on the campus. The concert, which begins at 7:30p.m., will feature Atwater-Donnelly, Greg Trooper, and Melvin Goins & Windy Mountain. Doors open to the public at 7 p.m. to allow campus guests to visit the performers and sponsors display tables. Aubrey Atwater and Elwood Donnelly, are self-taught musicians from Rhode Island who formed a duo in 1987. Atwater has performed original songs of social commentary, as well as contemporary folk songs and traditional ballads. Donnelly, who has performed professionally since he was 15, began with a rock band, then as a solo artist, and later in a Cambodian band. He writes songs for voice, guitar and harmonica. The pair has performed throughout the United States and British Isles and their seven recordings receive international airplay. They have completed extensive research on folk music in New England, Ireland, England, Prince Edward Island, the Ozarks and Appalachia. The duet has shared festival billing with a number of folk legends, such as Jean Ritchie, Pete Seeger and Doc Watson. Among Atwater and Donnelly's latest projects was a live recording titled "And Then I'm Going Home." They also completed two books of poetry, written by Atwater, and a 130-page songbook titled "Song by Song." The free concert is presented by WMKY 90.3 FM, MSU's public radio to the mountains, and the University's Kentucky Center for Traditional Music (KCTM). -
