A FRESH START

September often feels like a month of fresh starts. As a Football or Rugby fan the season is still new enough to remain optimistic about your team’s chances this year. New players over the summer transfer window have been signed. I heard this morning on the radio that my team have signed an upcoming England star. The season stretches out with possibilities of a decent cup run, promotion or at least a higher finish then the season before.

In the world of education a new term starts with all its potential. Everyone has had the summer off and generally returns with enthusiasm! New teachers have new classes. New uniforms, new bags and new stationery have been purchased. Exercise books are full of white space waiting to be filled. It is often in the autumn when people think about looking for a new job after they have had time to rest and reflect during the summer holidays.

One of the books I have on my bookshelf is called; ‘A fresh start’. On the back it says ‘if you have been searching for a book that simply and clearly explains what it means to be a Christian your search is over’. I think it is a brilliant title for a book about Christianity, as a fresh start is what God offers people through the death and resurrection of Jesus. A fresh start with new forgiveness, identity, purpose and future. This autumn please feel able to come to one of our services, perhaps the Harvest celebrations, to hear more about the ‘fresh start’ that Jesus offers.

CHARITY TEA - Bank Holiday Monday

The Charity Tea on August Bank Holiday Monday proved to be a great success – and even the rain held off! All the proceeds were going to Breast Cancer Care, and the efforts of everyone resulted in a grand total of ₤510 (any more to come?). Our thanks go to the “Ladies of Ringmore” who organized the event, to the stallholders, cake makers and those serving refreshments (not forgetting Sylvia who did the washing-up!). Special thanks to those to put up and later dismantled the marquee, and to Dudley for the use of his field for car parking. Lastly, and crucially, thank you to everyone who attended, both holidaymakers and villagers, and to those who sent donations, for their support for this worthy cause. Lorna is very busy preparing for the ‘Big Night on the Beach’ so I am re-running last month’s article as most of the content is relevant to September

With all the warm dry weather we have had it has been great to get out and enjoy the coast and beaches. Unfortunately with this we have seen some antisocial behaviour occurring on our sites with unauthorised camping, fires using wood broken away from fences or nearby trees and on a recent occasion where lots of beer bottles smashed up on Wembury beach. If you do see anyone having a fire on NT land please do let us know as a fire can quickly get out of hand and spread in these very dry conditions.

We are still in need of volunteers to help out at the South West Outdoor Festival on the 5-7 October. By volunteering for 2 shifts (each shift is 4 hours) over the festival period you would qualify for a free ticket, for more information look on the website: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/SWOF and follow @NTSWOF on Facebook and Twitter for updates too.

Check out our other events coming soon (for further information go to www.nationaltrust.org.uk/events):

Throughout the summer holiday we will have pop up events happening at Wembury beach and South Milton Sands when the weather is nice and we have volunteers available to help us. These pop ups will be for a few hours and have 50 things activities to undertake. We will post these on Facebook the day before so please do follow us to keep updated.

15th September, 4pm – 9.30pm – Big Night on the beach – South Milton Sands. This family favorite is back again, celebrating the end of summer with family activities and the spectacular sundown parade. You'll also have the chance to try out watersports, rockpooling, crafts, and beach games, with storytelling, bird watching and more too. In partnership with the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this event is not to be missed. Wear clothing that is suitable for the weather, taking into consideration that the beach may get cooler after dark. The event is free to attend, but small charges apply for some of the taster sessions

16th September, 2.30pm – 4.30pm – MSC beach clean – Wembury beach. Come and help the National Trust Rangers and Devon Wildlife Trust Marine centre Wardens clean Wembury beach as part of the Marine Conservation Society Great British beach clean. Be part of this national event and do your bit for protecting the beautiful beaches and marine life. Please bring a pair of gardening gloves, shoes suitable for getting wet and clothing appropriate for the weather. The event is free but please register on the Marine conservation society beach clean website ( https://www.mcsuk.org/beachwatch ) so we know how many will be turning up.

For information regarding the work of the South Devon National Trust team please call Lorna Sherriff on 01548 562344 or email [email protected] Letters to the Editor - write to [email protected] .

Dear Editor On Friday 21st September between 1000 and 1200, your Parish Room Committee will be carrying out small cleaning and maintenance tasks in and around the Parish Room. Farewell to Dane & Hilary Vanstone

I am sure that everyone in Ringmore Parish has a very good reason to thank Dane and Hilary for the business they have run so successfully over the past 20 odd years. There commitment to the community has been significant, both in the goods and services they provide in the shop but also in the support they have provided to societies and good causes within the community.

One personal example I have thoroughly appreciated has been the Christmas food taster morning and I am full of admiration for Dane’s approach to selling Christmas spirits at this event!

Fortunately they will be staying in the area and I’m sure will wish to participate in many of the activities and events they hitherto have been too busy to join in.
