Superintendent Summary Board of Education Meeting June 15, 2021

Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m.

Roll Call Steve Cook and Brice Wesley were not present.

Audience to Visitors A member of the audience asked questions in regards to a previous agenda item and was instructed to send the District a Freedom of Information request for the information she was requesting.

Marion Education Association Kerri Young, MEA Pro-Tem President, introduced herself to the Board and stated she would be the acting president until elections are officially held in the fall. She discussed the tuition waiver for non-resident children of full-time certified staff members and encouraged the Board to vote for this benefit for their members.

Consent Agenda The Board voted 5-0 to approve the consent agenda as presented:

a. Minutes - the minutes from the May 12, 2021 special meeting and May 25, 2021 regular meeting. b. Bills – the June bills for payment as presented c. Annual ESSA Title I Program Survey d. Elementary Title I School Plans e. ESEA/ESSA Consolidated Plan

Personnel Recommendations The Board voted 5-0 to approve the following personnel recommendations as presented.

EMPLOYMENT Certified Amy Travis, 1st Grade Teacher assigned to Jefferson School pending certification, effective for the 2021-2022 school year.

Alyssa Patterson, Physical Education Teacher assigned to Marion Junior High, effective for the 2021-2022 school year.

EMPLOYMENT Non-Certified Angie Marler, Secretary assigned to Jefferson School, effective July 29, 2021.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE Elizabeth Mitacek, a maternity leave of absence beginning approximately August 23, 2021 through November 26, 2021, using accumulated sick leave.

REASSIGNMENT Brittany Smith, reassigned from Jefferson Elementary 1st Grade to Jefferson Elementary 2nd Grade, for the 2021-2022 school year.

RESIGNATIONS Eli Baker, MHS Head Boys Cross Country Coach and MHS Head Boys Track & Field Coach, effective at the end of the 2020-2021 season.

Jason Dunning, MHS Assistant Wrestling Coach, effective at the end of the 2020-2021 season.

Catherine Jerrells, MHS Family & Consumer Science Teacher, effective June 1, 2021.

Brock Musoiu, MHS Assistant Boys Soccer Coach, effective immediately.

Laurel Sandage, Secretary assigned to Jefferson Elementary, effective July 2, 2021.

Certified Staff Tuition Waiver Item tabled until July meeting.

2021-2022 Parent-Student Handbook The Board voted 5-0 to approve the 2021-2022 Parent-Student Handbook as presented.

Activity Bus The Board voted 5-0 to authorize Keith Oates, Superintendent to pre-order activity bus to replace activity bus #2 as presented.

Technology Report Continual planning for technology grant expenditures. Student Data Privacy Agreements/Vendors Advanced preparation for Ruckus Cloud-based Wi-Fi Completed Kindergarten registration though on line Registration Advanced technology planning for the 2021-2022 school year. Weekly addition of new Securly accounts for parents. Daily monitoring of SysCloud to ensure daily backup of all Unit #2 Google accounts.

Technology Report (con’t) Web page construction to bring Marion CUSD #2 into SOPPA compliancy. Monthly attendance data uploaded to ISBE for all buildings, Pre-K, Echo, StarQuest and WCES Speech only students. Finalizing Student and Teacher Course Assignment as per ISBE mandates. Received and processed 31 Tech Work Requests. Projector troubleshooting. Repair and/or replace. On-going. Finalizing ISBE/SIS McKinney-Vento for Homeless population. Daily email account creations for new students. Addressing online security measures at all buildings.

Maintenance Report Buildings Lincoln School – Construction is well underway, all classrooms have been relocated with the help of the Lincoln teachers and staff. Contractors have been removing the ceiling A hall classroom, offices, media center and hallways along with lighting and some duct work. Roofing materials are on site and HVAC contractors have been working on controls. Junior High – Parking lot project has started between the old and new building; when that is complete they plan on going to the West lot. Custodians Custodians that have summer school in their building have been cleaning and disinfecting the building along with normal summer work such as deep cleaning and scrubbing /waxing areas and classrooms. Warehouse/Grounds crew work tirelessly to keep up with mowing and weeds due to all the rain events. Maintenance Maintenance crew has started summer work requests along with preventive maintenance items, painting of some classrooms, offices and hallways, any emergency issues, roof leaks and cooling issues. Sports Complex Sports Complex crew have been keeping the and fields ready for practice and games. They also keep our grounds fertilized and mowed.

Superintendent’s Report Dr. Oates informed the Board that MHS had several athletic teams finishing their seasons and was pleased to report on their successes. He stated summer camps are currently underway at the HEC building and the District has numerous construction projects in progress.

Assistant Superintendent Report Mrs. Sanders reported summer school has started and updated the Board on enrollment numbers along with acknowledging staff members for making it possible for students to make up ground and be successful in the 2021-2022 school year. She acknowledged Darryl Sullivan, MHS graduate, for his success at the collegiate level. He was named 1st Team All-American as well as finished in 4th place in the NCAA Men’s High Jump. Due to her pending retirement at the end of June, Mrs. Sanders thanked Marion Unit #2 for the opportunities afforded to her and her family as well as for all the memories.

Sports Marion High School Baseball – MHS Baseball advanced to the Regional Championship game. Season ended with a 14-5-1 record.

Sports Marion High School Football – Gil Aguilar, Brody Larson, Venson Newsom and Hunter Simmons have been selected to the 2021 Spring Football All-South team.

Golf (Girl’s) – Sarah Capel won the SIGA Franklin County Jr./Callaway Cup qualifier with a 74. This was her 2nd prep tour win.

Softball – MHS Softball team advanced to the Sectional Semi-final game. Their season ended with a 20-1 record and are the South Seven Conference Champions and Regional Champions. South Seven Conference Honors: 1st team – Jerzy Bittle, Amelia Browning, Tori Evans and Heaven Lawrence, 2nd team – Presley Barnett and Abbi Sherrard, Honorable Mention – Lexi Litton and Megan Beach. Kaitlyn Ruess was named MVP and Karris Rhine was named Captain.

Track & Field (Boy’s) – the MHS Boys Track & Field has been named the 2021 South Seven Champions. MileSplit IL Boys Track & Field Class 2A has ranked Marion as #7 in the state. High School Boy’s Track State Finals Qualifiers: 4x100 – Kaden Barber, Tommy Wiseman, Venson Newsom and Bryson Wilson Shot and Discus – Kane Carter Long Jump – Bryson Wilson & Venson Newsom 400 Meter Run – Bryson Wilson Pole Vault – Dyson Royce (15” 6’) and Colin Beers (15”)

Track & Field (Girl’s) – For the 1st time in school history, the Lady Cat Track & Field team won the South Seven Championship!

High School Girl’s Track State Finals Qualifiers: Shot – Maryiah Menicucci (39’) 100 Meter Run – Janae Maxwell 4x200 – Janae Maxwell, Kaydence Kelly, Bailey Williams and Olivia Hartwell IHSA 2A State Track & Field Results: Shot – Maryiah Menicucci finished in 5th place which earned her an IHSA All-State medal. 4x200 – The relay team of Maxwell, Kelly, Williams and Hartwell finished in 10th place - .03 seconds away from All-State honors 100 Meter Run – Janae Maxwell finished 16th overall

Soccer (Boy’s) – All-Conference Honors: 1st team: Drew Garrett and Daniel Hernandez, 2nd team: Chase Banks and Dyson Roye. All-Sectional Honors: Drew Garrett, All- Sectional Honorable Mention: Gavin Vickers

Sports Marion High School Soccer (Girl’s) – 2nd place in the South

Seven Conference and advanced to IHSA Sectional semi-finals. .

Tennis (Boy’s) – MHS Boy’s team won the South Seven Championship. All- Conference Honors: 2nd team: Alex Gott and Caleb Flesch, Honorable Mention: Kaleb Jordan.

Volleyball – Haylee Lambert and Dylann Torres were named to the 3A All-South Volleyball Team.

Wrestling – Nate Dampier earned his 100th career win. The team ended their season with a 21-3 record. 2021 South Seven All-Conference Honors: Brennan Vogt (120lb), Ricky Wade (126lb), Haylie Nappier-Feth (Girls/145lb), Nate Dampier (160lb), Aden White

(182lb), Clayton Tanner (220lb), Jade Nappier (Girls/285lb), and Kanye Gunn (285lb). The

Extra-Curricular/Clubs Marion High School Student Council – MHS Student Council has been awarded the 2021 National Gold Council of Excellence from the National Student Council Association. Sponsor: Marty Cameron

Coach Special Recognition Joy Neal, MHS Softball Coach, has earned her 200th win as head coach. Since becoming head coach in 2012, Coach Neal has amassed a record of 200-69 and has won 6 South Seven Championships and 3 IHSA Regionals. This year’s team finished the regular season as the #1 Illinois 3A ranked team in all polls. Coach Neal has been named the 2021 ICA Softball IHSA Section Coach of the Year for Class 3A.

Treasurer’s Report The District is 91.67% of the way through the fiscal year as of May 31, 2021. The Education Fund expenditures are at 87.45% and Operations and Maintenance Fund expenditures are at 87.96%. Expenditures for all district funds are at 89.14%.

Closed Session The Board entered closed session for Personnel, the purpose of the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity and Litigation, when an action against, affecting or on behalf of the particular public body has been filed and is pending before a court or administrative tribunal, or when the public finds that an action is probable or imminent, in which case the basis for the finding must be recorded and entered into the minutes of the closed meeting.

Adjournment The Board voted 5-0 to adjourn the meeting at 7:55 p.m.
