Each installation has a different theme and a different overall shape, inspired by the historic pieces and by stories from working and retired R.I.E. staff. Approaching from the lifts: (1) Narratives: a long line of historic rectangular plaques begins at the left with a bronze relief floor plan of the Place R.I.E., opened in 1879, and ends with a thistle partly formed of the floor plan of the new R.I.E., opened in 2003. Spaced out above the historic plaques are twelve bronze reliefs featuring waving hands, schematic heads and figures. These move from long horizontal forms, shortening to a circle, and then vertical ovals. It represents an overview of hands-on involvement with the hospital over the years, including the giving of funds, research, nutrition, hygiene, volunteering and spiritual care. (2) Subscribers: a large vertical historic plaque commemorates funds raised for the R.I.E. by the League of Subscribers 1918-1948, coal and shale miners who were often treated at the hospital. An integral bas relief shows miners and other members of the Edinburgh populace walking in procession towards the left. Either side of this is a new rectangular relief showing a crowd of abstracted heads. Beyond the new relief on the left is a historic plaque of a Freemasons 1941 Endowment; beyond the new relief on the right is a plaque listing various institutional donors. The layout of these five plaques forms part of a cross. (3) Nursing: between two large historical plaques, a bronze relief of a pelican on its nest is surrounded by an outline of the globe. Five historical plaques, decreasing in size, form a stepped base for the nest. Page 1 of 2 PMSA NRP: Work Record Ref: EDIN0011 14-Jun-11 © PMSA RAC This represents the prestigious pelican badge for nursing, whose holders worked across the world. (4) Advances in Medicine: a central 1927 plaque commemorates three physicians who made significant contributions to medical science: Lord Joseph Lister, Dr Argyll Robertson and Dr Matthews Duncan. Forming a long horizontal, six shield-shaped historic plaques, three either side, are interspersed with bronze relief forms of bottles and vials of various shapes (seven in all). This represents the changes in medical healthcare over the past 60 years. (5) Living and Working at the Royal Infirmary: an almost square installation consists of nine identically shaped and sized plaques on original wooden mounts, with four new square representational reliefs spaced between them forming the corners of an inner square. The new reliefs show, clockwise from top left, the turreted clocktower of the Lauriston Place R.I.E.; a group portrait in relief of eight nurses; a couple standing looking at tall wall plaques in a corridor; and a mouse on a tiled floor. This work was inspired by lighter moments recalled by staff.

Signatures: None Physical A wall installation of varied groupings of long wooden panels with short texts inscribed in cursive Description: script. In the 15 separate sections, the text is spread over the surface of between one and four panels. Arranged horizontally on the opposite wall, are hung some of the old wooden tabletops from the residents' refectory of the old R.I.E., where, traditionally, clinicians and scientists carved their names at the end of their residency. The installation is based on the memories and impressions that staff took with them of the old R.I.E., which, according to the information panel beside the installation, become 'distilled fragments garnered from history' inscribed on wooden panels. The new panels detail a particular experience or place, but carry no names, in contrast to the series of historic tabletops on the opposite wall which inspired the artist's approach. The old and the new panels link the new hospital to the old one and the collective past of the staff. A small red square abstract painting, ('Red Abstract' by Rosemary Lesso) on the angled grey wall at the entrance invites one into the space. A large cube of light grey granite (designed by Donald Urquhart) provides a focus, centred in front of a dark grey lacquered wall, with a band of graphite (by Donald Urquhart), on the right. Either side of this wall, large opaque windows with a band of blue and white abstract-patterned stained glass extend the wall's line of graphite. (The window panels are entitled 'Moonlight River' and 'Falling Leaves', and were designed by Ronald Ryan). Into the reflective top surface of the cube a square of Iona marble has been inset. The space is divided into various seating, praying or reflecting areas: a dark, semi-enclosed space, with low leather seats opposite a photographic work ('Star Field - Blackthorn') by Susan Derges; an Page 1 of 2 PMSA NRP: Work Record Ref: EDIN1529 14-Jun-11 © PMSA RAC 'informal corner' with two wooden sofas, two photographic seascape triptychs ('Rhythm' and 'Shift' by Iain Stewart) and an upholsterd bench (housing a background sound of running water) occupies most of the other end of the room; the more open space along the left side of The Sanctuary has a small reading / writing desk incorporated into a wall; a moveable screen separates a small prayer area with large pebbles, from the main seating area with individual chairs and a long solid wooden bench placed on the wooden floor parallel to the long walls. The left (east) wall hold's Donald Urquhart's 'Twenty Five Notations on an Idea of Space', a regular sequence of twenty-five sky-blue rectangular panels which soar upwards on this full-height wall, mysteriously lit by the hidden windows in the architectural lightbox.

Person or event The inlaid square of Iona marble in the granite cube, provides a link with 's religious past. The commemorated: cube itself also functions as a communion table. The two solid beams of Douglas fir which form the floor bench, were salvaged from the demolition of The Royal National Hospital, suggesting the history of hospital care in Sotland. History of The Sanctuary was commissioned by the Department of Spiritual and Pastoral Care for Lothian Commission University Hospitals Division. It was designed by Donald Urquhart, who worked with the Chaplaincy : team, Consort Healthcare, the Hospital Arts Committee, hospital staff and Edinburgh's various faith communities. The project was managed by Tom Littlewood of Ginkco Projects Ltd. Sutherland Hussey Architects created computer simulations of the spatial design. Donald Urquhart commissioned other artists to create works for The Sanctuary: Ronald Ryan (windows with stained glass panels; made by Christian Shaw); Rosemary Lesso ('Red Abstract'); Susan Derges ('Star Field - Blackthorn'); Tim Stott and Simon James (mobile screens); Inscape Joinery, Dalkeith (Douglas fir bench); Iain Stewart (triptychs); W. L. Watson & Son, St Andrews (cube); Tom Roebuck and Anthony Jackson from the Woodschool in the Scottish Borders (furniture); Lindy Richardson and Tonia Todd (textiles); Lorna Waite (recorded sound of running water in Glen Lyon, Perthshire); Mark Lough at the Tolbooth in Stirling (sound engineering). A cross, lectern and candle holder were commissioned for Christian services in The Sanctuary. These were designed by Daniel Rooke, a design student at Edinburgh College of Art, and made from stainless steel by Michael Johnson at Byres Forge. There are also two commissioned glass candle holders, designed by Chris MacFarlane, and cast by Maria Almas Frantzsen in the glass department of Edinburgh College of Art. These make reference to Ronald Ryan's stained glass panels.

Person or event commemorated:

History of This is one of three artworks commissioned for this 'Mapping Project'. Commission The artist asked staff and visitors to describe the 'milestones' of their journeys to the hospital, which : are distilled into poetic memories; suggesting fragments of experience. The artist regards this work as 'a central point in a living web of tracked movements.' It reflects her interest in maps, migration, and dream and real voyages. One of the 30 people asked to bring back a stone from different parts of Scotland was Alasdair MacGregor, senior consultant surgeon and former chairman of the R.I.E. Arts Committee, who died suddenly, and to whom this artwork is dedicated.
