- 3 - 16 NCAA Appearances • #SwordsUp • game notes 2019 @Privateers_BSB SCOUTING THE COMPETITION south alabama - The Jaguars went 32-25 last season including a 2-2 mark in the Sun Belt Tournament. Both of their losses came to top seed Coastal Carolina. In 2018, the Jaguars had a 17-5 record at Stanky Field but were 15-20 away from Mobile.

- The first weekend series for the Jaguars was against a ranked school (Clemson). Last year, South Alabama played 11 games against ranked opponents. They went 3-8 in those contests.

- In the preseason, South Alabama was selected to finish second in the East Division of the Sun Belt. Coastal Carolina, who won the regular season and tournament championships were favored. Troy, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, and Appalachian State were the remainder of the predicted order of finish in the division.

- Six Jaguars were selected in the June 2018 Draft. Among them was first round selection, Travis Swaggerty who was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Swaggerty became the first Jaguar to be taken in the first round of the draft since Mike Zimmermann back in 1990.

- Jared Proctor had a solid first season with South Alabama. The southpaw appeared in 19 games and started nine. He went 5-1 with a 3.11 ERA. Proctor had 49 strikeouts against 27 walks in 55 innings pitched. He originally began his career at Kentucky but transferred to Wabash CC after one season.

- South Alabama has a long history with the Privateers. The two teams met in the first season of New Orleans baseball (1970). South Alabama has won 95 of the 154 career meetings. The Jaguars are also 14-3 against the Privateers in the last 17 meetings between the two sides.

- Mark Calvi is in his eighth season with the Jaguars. He became the fifth head coach in program history after taking the job at the end of 2011. He experienced immediate success, leading South Alabama to their 14th Sun Belt championship and 25th NCAA Regional appearance in just his second season at the helm. He owns an 11-3 career record against the Privateers as Jaguar head coach.

- Ethan Wilson has crushed the ball at the beginning of his freshman season. The Andalusia, Ala. native is hitting .397 with five homers and 22 RBI. Wilson has a hit in all but two games. His first career home run came in the Jaguars’ season opener against Clemson.

- Eddie Stanky, whom the Jaguars’ field is named after has an endless list of accomplishments. As a player, he went to three World Series and was a three-time All-Star. As a coach, he guided the Jaguars for 14 seasons and was the second winningest coach in school history. He also managed three Major League teams (St. Louis, Chicago-AL, and Texas).

South Alabama

“We’re definitely trying to run Bailey out there and get us a good start. We’re still trying to figure out where everyone fits in this rotation. We’ll run him out there at least a few innings and see where we’re at from there.”

“South Alabama has played well and they always seem to be at the top of their conference. You can’t let numbers deceive you. We just have to make the plays when we have the opportunity presented.”

“We’re going to be all hands on board. Some guys are going to have to step up and maybe throw multiple innings who maybe haven’t before.”

- 9 - 16 NCAA Appearances • #SwordsUp • game notes 2019 @Privateers_BSB HEAD COACH BLAKE DEAN

Blake Dean was named the University of New Orleans’ seventh head coach in its 48 year history during the summer of 2015 following a brief stint as the school’s interim head coach.

After taking over for Ron Maestri who retired following his second stint as Privateers head coach, Dean has continued the re- build. In 2018, New Orleans reached their first conference championship game in 10 years and they did it as the lowest seed (8) in the Southland Tournament.

Three Privateers were named to the All-Tournament Team: Beau Bratton, Orynn Veillon, and Kyle Arjona. In his first three seasons, New Orleans has seen 11 players named to the All-Southland postseason team. Seven more have earned honorable mention.

Last year was also a breakout season for the pitching staff. The 580 strikeouts was the most in a single season in program his- tory, smashing the previous record of 511 (set in 2002).

In 2017, the Privateers won 30 games and qualified for the Southland Tournament for the second consecutive season. New Orleans was one of the last four teams remaining before being eliminated by eventual champion, Sam Houston State.

In 2016, the Privateers’ 31-26 record marked the first winning record for the baseball program since 2008 and qualified for the Southland Conference for the first time since joining the league prior to the 2013-14 academic year. In his first season at the helm, UNO saw a 17-game turnaround, the eighth-best in Division I in 2016, while the team was one of 17 to increase their winning percentage by .200, boasting the fourth-highest improvement.

The Privateers set eight-year highs in batting average (.300), total hits (600), doubles (77), on base percentage (.368) and field- ing percentage (.966) saves (15), and strikeouts (400) in that span.

Nationally, UNO finished eighth in triples per game with a 0.44 average and 10th in total triples with 25 while Dakota Dean cracked the top 25 individually with six on the season, the 22nd-most. UNO’s resurrected offense led the Southland Confer- ence in triples, while finishing second in in hits, batting average, third in RBI, fewest batters struck out (328) and fourth in slugging percentage (.416).

During his time on the Lakefront, Dean was instrumental in Capielano and Randolph claiming Freshman All-America status in 2014 while helping several Privateer hitters improve their production at the plate.

Highlights on the diamond, however, are nothing new for Dean as the native of Crestview, Florida, has experienced success at every stop of his baseball career to date.

As a prepster at Crestview High, Dean was a four-year all-state honoree and was a member of the USA Baseball Youth Na- tional Team. Following his senior season, he claimed Louisville Slugger All-America recognition and was named to Baseball America’s Top 300 High School Players of 2006.

From there, he packed his bags for Baton Rouge where he helped LSU post a combined 175 wins, three trips to the NCAA Su- per Regionals and a pair of berths in the College World Series – including a National Championship in 2009. As they had done during his high school career, honors came in by the handful for Dean in college. As a rookie, he was named Freshman All-SEC, Louisiana Freshman of the Year and Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American.

One year later, Dean was tabbed first-team All-American by Baseball America, second-team All-South Region by the American Baseball Coaches Assocation and Louisiana Hitter of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. He also claimed SEC Tournament MVP and Baton Rouge Regional Most Outstanding Player recognition during the Tigers’ march to Omaha.

Dean claimed first-team all-state honors in each of his final three collegiate seasons, was tabbed first-team All-SEC as a junior and was a candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in 2010. Along the way, he finished second in school history in hits (332), RBI (260) and total bases (575), fourth in home runs (56) and fifth in runs scored (223).

Dean completed his bachelor’s degree in sports administration from LSU in 2013.
