Rucka and Lark developed the setting for Lazarus by looking at the Occupy movement and the underlying economics, then asking themselves "What happens if it goes horribly wrong? Lazarus is simply one of the best series currently in production and this miniseries, which breaks from current continuity to give us several side stories set in this universe, only helps to further develop one of the more vividly-imagined future society's in all of imaginative literature. American writer Greg Rucka and artist Michael Lark had previously collaborated on the comic series Gotham Central for DC Comics between and and various small projects for Marvel Comics in the years following. While Rucka never directly states anything of the nature here, I feel comfortable assuming that some — if not all — of the animosity here stems from her class. Lazarus X+66 Reviews These stories that expand on the dystopian setting of Lazarus prove just how excellent a series it is. This issue also makes room for me to continue pulling at a thread from my prior pieces, on the role and function of narration within comics. Issue one was a stand out. You won't be disappointed! Lark liked the story and committed to drawing the comic as soon as a full script was ready. If it's not worth your money, I'll be the first to say so. In an in-depth review of the series for the Los Angeles Review of Books in , Evan McGarvey praised the research and thought that went into Lazarus , but expressed concern that the visual requirements of the art conflicted with the political themes. That is to say, individuals whose loyalties to friends and family are often subverted to the privilege of living or dying for a cause purported to be far greater than their own. Add your thoughts here I didn't like the style choice for the writing in the final chapter, though -- I liked the story and the art, but the Fantasy novel writing style just didn't work for me and doesn't fit the tone of the rest of the book. Creators are rarely up to the task, vaguely suggesting an overgrown thirst for power or money, but never quite convincing us how those things add up to a homicidal maniac. Rucka and Lark take the extra content in them "very seriously" because hardcovers are expensive. Zero spoiler review See my other review for the full run proper. I have to say I wasn't looking forward to this at all, after all what are they playing at taking a break from the main story to go off and do some sort of mini series that is off to the side. • Crossmedia Adaptation and the Development of Continuity in the Dc Animated Universe
“INFINITE EARTHS”: CROSSMEDIA ADAPTATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONTINUITY IN THE DC ANIMATED UNIVERSE Alex Nader A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2015 Committee: Jeff Brown, Advisor Becca Cragin © 2015 Alexander Nader All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeff Brown, Advisor This thesis examines the process of adapting comic book properties into other visual media. I focus on the DC Animated Universe, the popular adaptation of DC Comics characters and concepts into all-ages programming. This adapted universe started with Batman: The Animated Series and comprised several shows on multiple networks, all of which fit into a shared universe based on their comic book counterparts. The adaptation of these properties is heavily reliant to intertextuality across DC Comics media. The shared universe developed within the television medium acted as an early example of comic book media adapting the idea of shared universes, a process that has been replicated with extreme financial success by DC and Marvel (in various stages of fruition). I address the process of adapting DC Comics properties in television, dividing it into “strict” or “loose” adaptations, as well as derivative adaptations that add new material to the comic book canon. This process was initially slow, exploding after the first series (Batman: The Animated Series) changed networks and Saturday morning cartoons flourished, allowing for more opportunities for producers to create content. References, crossover episodes, and the later series Justice League Unlimited allowed producers to utilize this shared universe to develop otherwise impossible adaptations that often became lasting additions to DC Comics publishing.

The purpose of this research is to adapt the approaches used by prominent and influential writers and artists in the American superhero/action comic-book field to create an engaging Australian hero comic book. Further, the aim of this thesis is to bridge the gap between the lack of academic writing on the professional practice of the Australian comic industry. In order to achieve this, I explored and learned the methods these prominent and professional US writers and artists use. Compared to the American industry, the creating of comic books in Australia has rarely been documented, particularly in a formal capacity or from a contemporary perspective. The process I used was to navigate through the research and studio practice from the perspective of a solo artist with an interest to learn, and to develop into an artist with a firmer understanding of not only the medium being engaged, but the context in which the medium is being created.

Comic books have rarely been treated as a serious art form or cultural phenomenon. It used to be that creating a comic book would be considered shameful or something done only as side work. Beginning in the 1990s, some comic creators were able to leverage enough cultural capital to influence more media. In the post-9/11 world, generic elements of superheroes began to resonate with audiences; superheroes fight against injustices and are able to confront the evils in today’s America. This has created a billion dollar, Oscar-award-winning industry of superhero movies, as well as allowed created comic book careers for artists and writers.

Even as the logo is altered with time, the yellow backdrop traded for a grey one, the awareness persists. Yet even as people recognize Batman’s logo, one person’s impression of the superhero does not always align with another’s: a cheerful, law-abiding Batman who orders orange juice instead of alcohol at bars is Batman as he appeared in the 1960s, and a brooding hero wreathed in darkness and prone to conflicted inner monologues is the Batman of the 1980s.
