Great art for everyone Arts Council England works to get great art to everyone by championing, developing and investing in artistic experiences that enrich people’s lives. As the national development agency for the arts, we support a range of artistic activities from theatre to music, literature to dance, photography to digital art, carnival to crafts. Great art inspires us, brings us together and teaches us about ourselves and the world around us. In short, it makes life better. Between 2008 and 2011, we will invest in excess of £1.6 billion of public money from the government and the National Lottery to create these experiences for as many people as possible across the country. CHAIR’S REPORT Looking back, moving forward In the year when the Arts Council conducted the most comprehensive review of public funding to the arts in England ever undertaken, it is important to look back further than the furore of the early part of 2008 and remind ourselves of the successful outcome won from the comprehensive spending review. Led by the Arts Council, the arts sector fought a long campaign that won us a surprisingly good settlement from government in what was roundly acknowledged to be a tough spending round. It is one thing to win a good settlement in an expansive spending round – quite another to do so in tighter times. But since becoming Chair I‘ve been clear that the Arts Council should be much, much more than a funding body. As I think I may have said once or twice before, the Arts Council is not just a cash point machine with a complicated pin number, but is also a development agency for the arts. I also believe that the arts ecology in this country can be more healthy, confident, and strong as a result. Everyone I’ve spoken to agrees with the principles we adopted; to champion innovation and excellence by bringing new organisations and giving others above-inflation increases rather than simply give all existing funded organisations a little more. As for the practical consequences… well, they were bound to divide opinion, especially when they led to organisations facing a reduction or non-renewal of their funding. It is precisely because we knew from the start that the investment strategy would at times be difficult that we must now conduct a review in order to benefit from a valuable external perspective on the process. Arts Council England annual review 03 CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S REPORT Artistic ambition It is a great honour to be writing this, my first introduction to an annual review of Arts Council England. The last year has been significant for the arts – the reopening of the Festival Hall and the wonderful programme in the first season including the Barenboim recitals and the Messiaen centenary events, Liverpool Capital of Culture, Opera North going from strength to strength, the RSC history plays, the emergence of new artists such as Hofesh Shechter, wonderful new writing in the theatre such as The Pitmen Painters – the list is enormous. Photo: Piers Allardyce settlement allowed the Arts Council to deepen its commitment to excellence, risk-taking, innovation and reach. The easy thing to do given such a settlement would have been to just leave things as they were and give everyone a little more. That we chose to do something more ambitious – to bring in over 80 new regularly funded organisations, to give over 750 organisations more than inflation – is the sign of an organisation with ambition for the arts.     Introduction Austin Fisher n many ways, the remit of this book revolves around an obvious Iproposition. The Spaghetti Western, as a transatlantic meeting place, is of necessity a cinematic category to be considered in international contexts, the hundreds of fi lms which the category comprises docu- menting shifts in Italy’s cultural outlook, as the reference points of American popular culture became ever more visible in the post-war years. Yet an Italo-American focus tells only a fraction of a story in which myriad strands of infl uence converged within, and continue to emanate from, this amorphous group of fi lms. Spaghetti Western is a classifi cation constantly in transit between cultures, genres and conceptions of taste, and its patterns of production, distribution and consumption display diverse acts of ‘border crossing’ and translation. By appraising a broad selection of fi lms – from the internationally famed works of Sergio Leone to the cult cachet of Sergio Corbucci and the more obscure outputs of such directors as Giuseppe Colizzi and Ferdinando Baldi – this volume seeks to reconsider the cultural signifi - cance of the Italian Western, its position within global cinema and its continuing trends of reception and appropriation around the globe. Scholarly volumes are always at pains to stress their timeliness in rela- tion to trends within their broader disciplines, and in this respect this one is no different. What Mette Hjort has termed Film Studies’ ‘transnational turn’ (2010: 13) highlights a desire to understand the ways in which cinema has offered a means to document the movement of peoples and identities across perceived cultural and spatial boundaries.

Although A Fistful of Dollars was not the first Italian Western per se, it was the first to present a set of individual and distinctive traits for which Latino versions of the myths of the West would subsequently become known.     Cultural and Religious Studies, March 2016, Vol. 4, No. 3, 141-160 doi: 10.17265/2328-2177/2016.03.001 D DAVID PUBLISHING Examples of National and Transnational Cinema: Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo and Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars Flavia Brizio-Skov University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA The term transnational originated in the historical field when, in the late 1990s, Ian Tyrrell wrote a seminal essay entitled “What is Transnational History?” and changed the course of the academic discipline, claiming that studying the history of a nation from inside its borders was outmoded because the study of history concerns the movements of peoples, ideas, technologies, and institutions across national boundaries. The study of cross-national influences and the focus on the relationship between nation and factors beyond the nation spilled over into many other fields, especially into cinematic studies. Today transnational refers to the impossibility of assigning a fixed national identity to much cinema, to the dissolution of any stable connection between film’s place of production and the nationality of its makers and performers. Because there is a lot of critical debate about what constitutes national and transnational cinema, the study of international remakes is a promising method to map the field with some accuracy. This essay will analyze the journey from Hammett’s novel to Kurosawa’s film and then to Leone’s western, and will demonstrate how the process of adaptation functions and what happens to a “text” when it becomes transnational and polysemic. Because Leone is the creator of the Italian western, the one who initiated the cycle that was copied many times over for a decade, we must look at A Fistful of Dollars as a prototype, a movie that when dissected can shed light on the national-transnational dichotomy of the spaghetti western.

    PRESS RELEASE The Italian Cultural Institute presents a tribute to SERGIO LEONE (1929 – 1989) on the 20th anniversary of his death Wednesday 6 May 2009 at 6,30pm To mark the 20th anniversary of Sergio Leone’s death – and the 80th of his birth – Sir Christopher Frayling, his first ever biographer, talks about the Spaghetti Western phenomenon with Dario Argento, who, together with Bernardo Bertolucci, wrote the long treatment of Once Upon a Time in the West. On the same night, opening of an exhibition of the most iconic posters of Leone’s films, lovingly collected by Sir Christopher over the years and generously lent to the Institute on this occasion, followed by a concert by Paolo Castelluccia, who will highlight the most famous and unforgettable films scores. Sergio Leone, the world-famous director of films such as A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West and Once Upon a Time in America, is considered the creator of the genre of Spaghetti Westerns, which changed the face of the most venerable and characteristic style of American cinema. They represented an extraordinary and potent cross-fertilization of American and European cultures, creating their own superstar – Clint Eastwood – and revitalizing the careers of many western veterans such as Lee Van Cleef. “The term ‘Spaghetti Western’ was first coined by American critics of the Italian western, and was intended as a pejorative; back home in Italy, the films came to be known – rather defensively – as ‘Macaroni Westerns’. This started a craze among film journalists for applying culinary labels to unauthentic or alien Westerns (…).
