The Albuquerque Biological Park is an accredited facility through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and seeks to maintain and continually improve upon the care and management of the animal and plant collection as well as providing an important recreational and educational venue to the citizens and visitors of the Albuquerque region. Background and General Information 1. The Albuquerque Biological Park is owned and operated by the City of Albuquerque. -

Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis Canadensis)
June 2007 Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) INDICATOR SPECIES HABITAT Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep inhabit the cliffs and crags or other extremely rocky areas in tundra and alpine areas from the summit peaks to around 200 meters below the tree line of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The species is an indicator for the presence of alpine, subalpine tundra and mountain meadow grassland (USDA 1986a, p.97). Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep may have been extirpated from New Mexico, where it was native to the northern most area of the state. Populations have been reintroduced using more stock from the central and northern Rockies, and viable herds exist in several areas of the state, including the east-side of the Carson National Forest (NMDGF 2006b). Bighorn prefer precipitous terrain adjacent to suitable feeding sites of high mountain meadows with grasses, forbs and browse species. Bighorn habitat is found in areas where canopy cover is less than 25 to 30 percent and slopes are greater than 60 percent for escape terrain adjacent to grazing areas. Forage, water, and escape terrain are the most important components of bighorn sheep habitat (Van Dyke et al. 1983, NMDGF 2005A). Generally, bighorn sheep have two distinct, separate summer and winter ranges. Most of the year is spent on the winter range, where the elevation is typically below 10,826 feet (3,300 m). The aspect is usually south or southwest. Rams often venture onto the more open slopes, although rugged terrain is always nearby. During severe weather, if snow becomes unusually deep or crusty, bighorn sheep move to slightly higher elevations where wind and sunshine have cleared the more exposed slopes and ridges (NMDGF 2005A). -

www.nmwild.org NEW MEXICO CONGRESSMAN TOM UDALL FIGHTING THE G O O D F I G H T by Stephen Capra hen it comes to conservation, wilderness and the protection of W wildlands in America, few fami- lies have the same pedigree as the name Udall. Here in New Mexico Congressman Tom Udall is the latest in the Udall family to fi ght hard for the protection of wildlands in the West. His Father, Stewart Udall was Secretary of Interior during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations. His uncle Mo Udall is fondly remembered for his efforts on national wilderness issues and his work on the monumental Alaska Lands Act. And today, during what many people consider a conservation crisis under the Bush Administration, few Congressmen are working harder and voting consistently for the protection of our National Forests and our public lands than our own New Mexico Congressman Tom Udall. Even before being elected to Congress, Udall worked diligently as Attorney Gen- eral of New Mexico to slow sprawl and enact tough new measures for develop- ers. Land use and subdivisions at that time had been loosely regulated in New Mexico, as in many parts of the West. A series of attempts in the early 1990’s to amend New Mexico’s subdivision laws failed. Interest groups such as the New Mexico Homebuilders Association and the New Mexico Association of Realtors had long been a powerful force in the state. But in 1995, the New Mexico State Legislature passed a sweeping set of amendments to the State’s subdivision laws. -

Geological Survey, Fort Collins Science Center, New Mexico Landscapes Field Station, 301 Dinosaur Trail, Santa Fe, NM 87508, USA * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +1-505-954-2251 Received: 9 February 2019; Accepted: 8 March 2019; Published: 14 March 2019 Abstract: Tree-ring fire scars, tree ages, historical photographs, and historical surveys indicate that, for centuries, fire played different ecological roles across gradients of elevation, forest, and fire regimes in the Taos Valley Watersheds. Historical fire regimes collapsed across the three watersheds by 1899, leaving all sites without fire for at least 119 years. Historical photographs and quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) ages indicate that a high-severity fire historically burned at multiple high-elevation subalpine plots in today’s Village of Taos Ski Valley, with large high-severity patches (>640 ha). Low-severity, frequent (9–29-year median interval) surface fires burned on the south aspects in nearby lower elevation dry conifer forests in all watersheds. Fires were associated with drought during the fire year. Widespread fires commonly burned synchronously in multiple watersheds during more severe drought years, preceded by wet years, including fire in all three watersheds in 1664, 1715, and 1842. In contrast, recent local “large” wildfires have only burned within single watersheds and may not be considered large in a historical context.
