  • Bob Brodhead
Professional Football Researchers Association www.profootballresearchers.com Bob Brodhead This article is written by Budd Bailey As of 2020, fans of the Buffalo Bills know the name of the last quarterback to wear No. 17. It’s Josh Allen, who they hope will be using that number for years to come. Most of those same fans would be stumped if asked what Bills’ quarterback was the first to wear No. 17. The answer goes back 60 years to the Bills’ original season. Bob Brodhead wasn’t around for long in Buffalo, but he certainly had an unusual career path in the sports business that essentially ended with something of a thud at Louisiana State University. Robert Edgar Brodhead was born on December 20, 1936 in Kittanning, Pa. The town is about 45 minutes northeast of Pittsburgh. That part of the world has become known as something of a breeding ground for quarterbacks. The list includes players like Joe Namath, Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana, Dan Marino, and Jim Kelly. Brodhead didn’t play at that level, but he was very good. He was a standout for the Kittanning Wildcats during the early 1950s, and was an all-state selection at quarterback in 1953 under coach Jim Rearic. Bob had 30 scholarship offers from colleges at that point, and opted to accept one from Duke. Kittanning High School retired his uniform number (87) at a ceremony in 2001. The high school closed in 2015. The Professional Football Researchers Association (PFRA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and, in some cases, reconstructing professional football history.

  • Joe Gardi Hofstra University Head Football Coach
JOE GARDI HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY HEAD FOOTBALL COACH Hofstra University Head Football Coach Joe Gardi is in his 13th season at the helm of the Pride program in 2002. Gardi, who spent nine years as an assistant coach with the New York Jets, has recorded a 99-36-2 record in his 12 seasons at Hofstra. His .730 winning percentage is the highest in Hofstra Football coaching history. Under Gardi's guidance, Hofstra made the jump from NCAA Division III in 1990 to I-AA in 1994. Since then, the Pride have become a top 10 I-AA program and have earned five NCAA I-AA championship bids in the last seven seasons. Over the past 12 years, more than 90 school records, seven ECAC marks, and four NCAA records have either been topped or tied by the Pride. In 2001 Hofstra ended its I-AA independent status by joining the Atlantic 10 Football Conference. Gardi directed the Pride to a 9-2 regular season record including a 7-2 conference mark, the League’s co-championship, the A-10’s automatic bid to the NCAA I-AA Playoffs and a Top 10 final national ranking. As a team, Hofstra ranked in the top 10 in I-AA in total offense (2), punt returns (3), passing offense (4), scoring offense (5) and turnover margin (10). In 2000 Hofstra recorded an 8-3 regular season record and was ranked as high as fourth in the country in I-AA. The Pride received their fourth I-AA Playoff bid and defeated Furman on the road in the opening round before losing to eventual national champions Georgia Southern in the quarterfinals.
