Held in Beirut, the final round of the Arab Idol competition featured two Palestinian contestants, Yacoub Shahin of Bethlehem in the Palestinian Authority and Ameer Dandan from the Galilee town of Majd al-Krum in Israel, along with a third finalist from Yemen.1 1 The Israeli Hebrew press portrayed the Arab Idol finals as "a competition between an Israeli and a Palestinian," however Dandan was enlisted to the program and presented himself during 1 When Shahin was declared the winner, widely known as "Mahbub al-ʿArab" ("Darling of the Arabs/Beloved one of the Arabs"), it touched off a celebration in Bethlehem’s Manger Square. As the others, he wants to take revenge for the killing of his family, but the mission is to bring Eichmann alive so that he may be put on trial in Jerusalem. As Peter comes to consider his prisoner an ordinary and banal being he wants to understand the incomprehensible. To do so, he disobeys orders. During the confrontation between the soldier and his prisoner, a strange relationship develops… CAPTURING THE DEVIL HISTORICAL CONTEXT 1945 The Nuremberg trial is intended to clear the way to for the rebuilding of Western Europe Several Nazi hierarchs have managed to hide or escape Europe 1945 Adolph Eichmann who has organized the deportations and killings of millions of people is hiding in Europe. 1950 Eichmann is briefly detained in Germany but escapes to South America thanks to a Red Cross passport. In Europe and in Israel, Jews who survived the camps try to move into a new life. The young state of Israel fights for its survival throughout two wars in 1948 and 1956. The Nazi hunt is considered a “private“ matter. 1957 the Bavarian General Attorney Fritz Bauer, who has engaged into a second denazification of Germany’s elite, gets confirmation that Eichmann may be located in Argentina. -

The origins for 85 referrals (1%) were not reported, while three 5,733 West Bank referrals were from Jordan. Female patient referrals comprised 46% of the total. Low referrals to Israeli referrals approved for financial hospitals persisted, with 92 referrals to Israeli hospitals from Gaza (24% of the 2018 monthly average coverage for healthcare outside of 389), and 341 referrals from the West Bank (29% of the 2018 monthly average of 1,185). The Journal of Development Communication SOCIAL MEDIA AND PALESTINIAN YOUTH CULTURE: THE IMPACT OF NEW INFORMATION AND MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES ON CULTURAL AND POLITICAL DEVELOPMENT IN PALESTINE Lina Edward Khamis n the last decades Palestinians witnessed a failure to reactivate the peace Iprocess, coupled with the expansionist policies of the current Israeli government, the quest of a two-state solution, is fast disappearing. Barriers to development imposed by the continuing occupation and the separation wall. The consequences of the Palestinian condition as a stateless nation, and nonexistence were evidenced in the lack of communication among people, the distance from places of leisure, culture and social disintegration with all the limitations of life that are accompanied with it. The Palestinians had to invent and create an immediate solution to come alive and adapt to the current situation or else run the risk of engendering a well known form of social pathology. In a country were institutional forms of government are lacking; ‘popular culture has developed on social media platforms free from the governmental authority and power. Facebook provides a free space for self-expression, creativity, civic initiative, anti-politics and the freedom of communication with international society.’ Recent statistics indicate that Palestinian youth are one of the largest users of social media in the Arab World, mainly Facebook (PCBS, 2015). The onset of the use of social media heralded an interest, by scholars in re-defining the lynchpins of democracy in Palestine and the importance of social media in that equation. The effect of new media on emotional life, empathy, political participation, and social mobilisation had a major impact on these deliberations. -

The films are many and the project is ongoing. Why film? Film is often an extraordinarily effective tool. I found that many students in my classes seemed more visually literate than print literate. Whenever I showed a film, they would remember the minute details, characters names and sub-plots. Films were accessible and immediate. Almost the whole class would participate and debates about the film’s meaning were lively. Film showings also improved attendance at teach-ins. At the Truro, Massachusetts, Library in July 2014, the film Voices Across the Divide was shown to the biggest audiences the library has ever had, even though the Wellfleet Library and several churches had refused to allow the film to be shown. Organizing is also important. When a film is controversial, as many in this pamphlet are, a thorough organizing effort including media coverage will augment the turnout for the film. Many Jewish and Palestinian groups list films in their resources. This pamphlet lists them alphabetically, and then by number under themes and categories; the main listings include summaries, to make the films more accessible and easier to use by activist and academic groups. 2 1. 5 Broken Cameras, 2012. -

Zena el Khalil Zena el Khalil, born year of the Dragon, is a visual artist, writer and cultural activist based in Beirut, Lebanon. She has lived in Lagos, London and New York. Her work includes mixed media paintings, installations and performance and is a by-product of political and economic turmoil; focusing on issues of violence, gender and their place in our bubblegum culture. She has exhibited in the United States, Europe, Africa, Japan and the Middle East. While living in NYC, Zena co-founded xanadu*, an art collective dedicated to promoting emerging Arab and under - represented artists as a direct response to the 9-11 attacks which she witnessed. Currently, xanadu* is based in Beirut where Zena is focused on curating cultural events and publishing poets and comic book artists. During the 2006 invasion of Lebanon, Zena was one of the first largely followed Middle Eastern bloggers; her writings published in the international press, including the BBC, CNN, and Der Spiegel. The entire Guardian G2 supplement in July was dedicated to her blog, Beirut Update. In 2008, she was invited to speak at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo and soon after, completed her memoir, Beirut, I Love You, now translated in several languages. Her publishers include The New York Review of Books and Saqi Books and Publishers Weekly gave her book a starred review. In an attempt to spread peace, Zena is often seen running around Beirut in a big pink wedding dress. In 2012, Zena was made a TED Fellow and has since given a few TED and TEDx talks. -

But the web that is woven between them in the space of twenty-four hours bears no relation to the circumstances of their encounter. 4 5 new awakening Without doubt, there was an underlying sense of gnawing depravity that surfaced in Certified Copy and took me by surprise. I was sure that I already had a good understanding of the work of this film-maker that I have been lucky enough to come across so often in the past 25 years. So I was not expecting his latest film to outstrip the already high opinion I have of his work. Some people like to feel that they can describe and pigeonhole his films as ‘pseudo-simplistic modernism’. But Abbas’ films have never failed to surprise and now here, not for the first time, is a new wake-up call, for me, and I am sure many others.
