The Director’s Forum: Tips for Trips

Why is it important to stay current on a trip payment plan? Payment schedules for trips are established by the trip leaders and are spread out over several months for the obvious reason of making the trip more affordable for the participant. That being said, payment installments for a trip should be treated just like any other expense you incur on a monthly basis, such as a mortgage and car payment or credit card bill. The Baltimore Ski Club covers the initial deposit for a trip, which in many cases is thousands of dollars, long before we have received the first deposit from any participant. This can be an expensive proposition as we run between six to nine trips per ski season. Our tour operators set payment due dates and amounts in their contracts as dictated to them by resort properties, airlines and ground transport. We, as a club, rely on prompt payments from trip participants so that we are able to meet our contractual obligations. Lodging properties maintain the right to cancel or reduce our rooming reservation if payment is not received in a timely manner. The same applies for airline reservations. It is important that the BSC maintains our integrity and reputation within the ski industry by consistently meeting our financial obligations. You can help the Club with this endeavor by staying current with your trip payments.

Our European adventure began when the group arrived in Brussels on October fifth and immediately started the day with a tour of Mini- Europe. This attraction, similar to Gulliver’s Gate in New York City, features miniature replicas of major European landmarks throughout the ages. After admiring all the detail that went into creating this journey around Europe in miniature, we enjoyed a group lunch with multiple courses of food, wine and of course Belgium beer! Following lunch, we boarded the coach and were off to Rotterdam, our home for the next three nights. Upon our arrival at the Rotterdam Hilton, we were treated to a wonderful buffet dinner and then off to bed we went for a well-deserved nights rest. The next day we toured Rotterdam and learned a little of the city’s history, including examples of pre and post WWII construction. Next stop... pannenkoekenboot or pancake boat! We enjoyed a leisurely river cruise while being served buffet style unlimited Belgium crepes with various topping options to make a creation to suit our fancy. Day four of our tour brought us to the city of Delft. There we visited the famous Royal Delft Porcelain factory, established in 1653 and saw start to finish the craftsmanship that goes into producing the iconic Delft Blue earthenware. From Delft we made our way to the village of Kinderdijk to see the world-renowned windmills. We learned that the windmills had one purpose, not to grind grain, but to pump the water out of the area due to its position below sea level. The adventure continued in Gouda where the famous cheese got its start. After time to see the city and sample and buy a wide variety of cheeses we headed to Ghent. Ghent was one of the largest cities in Europe in the 1300's with a population of 50,000. The following day we went to into the medieval city of Bruges for a walking tour. Often called the Venice of the north for its many canals, every street in Bruges looks like a postcard. The groups activity for the day culminated with a visit to one of the oldest breweries, Bourgogne Des Flanders for a tour and tasting. Before leaving Ghent, we explored Gravensteen Castle which dates back to 1180. The audio tour gave us a rather humorous and at times chilling room by room insight into life inside and out of the castle walls during that period. What would Belgium be without chocolate?!?! Day eight marked the official chocolate tasting. But first we headed to Leuven for a city tour, followed by an amazing lunch at another brewery, the Domus. The Domus Brewery runs copper lines under the street from the brewery to the tap house where we enjoyed PAGE 13 SCHUSS NOVEMBER 2019

our meal. After indulging in the rich Belgium food and beer, we were off to the Choco-Story Museum for an intriguing history lesson of chocolate with plenty of samples. White chocolate, dark chocolate, milk chocolate… chocolates!!!! After a brief demonstration of how pralines are made, we were able to sample the finished product. We had a hard time getting people out of the tasting room! The final day of our excursion, BSC members were let loose to explore on their own all that Brussels had to offer. In summary: French, pardon me, Belgium Fries or frite dipped in mayonnaise, cheese, beer, waffles and chocolate. What more could you want!

What to Wear in Winter in Japan? Recommended Clothing In January and February, you will need a down jacket or a coat. You will definitely need gloves and a muffler too On windy days, it is a good idea to have a knit cap and earmuffs. If you plan to be outside for a long time on cloudy days or in the evenings, we recommend that you use disposable kairo (heating pads) to protect your hands and feet from the cold. The heating pads can be purchased at any convenience store, supermarket, and drugstore. A pack of 10 heating pads costs around 200 yen. In order to use them, you just need to open the pack. The iron sand contained in the pad will begin to heat up in contact with the oxygen in the air. The pad will stay warm from 8 to 12 hours. PAGE 21 SCHUSS NOVEMBER 2019 BALTIMORE SKI CLUB, INC.
