Gearóid Hegarty Rising Star of Limerick GAA Gearoid Hegarty was born to wear the green and white of Limerick. After all, his Dad Ger was an integral part of the Limerick teams that won the 1984 All-Ireland minor hurling title and followed that with victory in the All-Ireland under 21 grade in 1987. And Dad isn’t the only member of the Hegarty clan with a Limerick jersey in the bottom drawer. Gearoid’s sister Áine played for Limerick in the Primary Game and brother Diarmuid played in the Primary Game hurling team in Thurles last June. All three members of the family played in the colours of Milford NS and Gearóid has high praise for his coaches in his Milford NS days. ‘Mr Fitzpatrick (RIP), Mr Nelligan and Mr Moore were our coaches in those days and we had great teams…even if we Gearóid Hegarty has been an avid lost a few finals’, says Gearóid. ‘I also made the Mackey Cup Green and White fan for many years team for two years, when I was in Fifth and Sixth classes. I was more of a hurler than a footballer in those days.’ Gearóid is a busy man. He plays at Under 21 and senior level for St Patrick’s in both football and hurling. He is a member of the Limerick Under 21 hurling and football panels and a key member of John Bruadair’s senior football squad. He also played with University of Limerick in the (inter-varsity football) this year. A busy man indeed. Gearóid trains at least five nights a week and eats like an athlete also. Chicken, fish, rice, pasta and lots of fruit. But his favourite food is steak, or ‘anything spicy.’ Growing up in a sports-mad home, Gearoid says there was never pressure on him to choose between hurling and football, although he was usually to be found with a hurley in his hand. The Hegarty household also boasts two dogs, Bobby and Scobie, a Labrador and a sheepdog. ‘I played with John Galvin last year. It was a great experience. When I was growing up, my family followed all Limerick teams, football as well as hurling. I grew up following John Galvin, so to walk into the Limerick dressing room and see John Galvin sitting there was great. I was hoping he might stay on this year but it was not to be.’ Gearóid Hegarty in Favourite footballer: ‘I always admired Seán Cavanagh of action for Limerick, Tyrone. I loved watching him when I was growing up.’ v Clare, in the Favourite hurler: ‘Andrew O Shaughnessy. ‘“Shocks”’ was 2015 Munster always the scoring hero.’ Championship. Any other sporting heroes? ‘I’ve a great interest in golf Photo by and Phil Mickelson is a big favourite of mine. I’m also a Conor Wyse. huge Liverpool fan so Steven Gerrard is a hero of mine. Unfortunately, he’s finishing up with Liverpool this season.’ Gearóid in Greatest influences on your career? ‘My Dad, obviously action because he had played with Limerick. With the club, Seán Maher because he looked after our under age teams in St Patrick’s for about ten years.’ Advice for young players? ‘If you really, really want something and you work hard at it, then you will get it.’

A number of performances of a specific play have been held to pay for the redevelopment of the field. The play in question is none other than ‘The Field’ by John B Keane. At present, it is known locally as ‘The Field’ and who knows, it may very well be named ‘John B Keane Park’ after the redevoleopment. Blackrock GAA: Michael Fox Memorial Park was called Around after a Garda who served in the area and was instrumental in developing GAA during his time there. 2006 All-Ireland Hurling Qualifier versus Offaly

Limerick Hurling was at a low, LOW dressing-rooms level, surprisingly so, but very buoyed ebb on July 1st, 2006. 2002 All-Ireland Hurling Qualifier versus Cork

Limerick’s first ever hurling qualifier game took place in 2002 against Cork in Thurles. Yes, we played against Wexford in 2001 but that was in the era before every top-tier hurling county got a second chance, when the provincial final losers got a second chance against either the Ulster Hurling Championship winners or (before they “moved” into Leinster) in cross-over quarter-finals. The game against Cork was a poor enough affair but it was a game that Limerick had every chance of win- ning, if we had taken even half the chances that presented themselves to us. Ultimately, it was to be another one point defeat; another huge chance missed.

The programme was a standard 16-page pro- duction. It cost €2. Barry Kelly reffed the game and I don’t remember him doing us any great favours: just talk to Albert Shanahan! Eamonn Cregan had a very long chat with the referee on the way off the pitch too. Barry has come a long way since then!
