SITUATION The principal living area is located to the rear, with an L shaped Shore House is located in an area of dramatic natural scenic open plan design accommodating a living space, dining area and beauty, on the edge of the small hamlet of Arduaine, about 4 kitchen. There is a corner window and door at one end and miles south of the village of Kilmelford on Scotland’s west coast. -

In this study, thermogenesis and variation in the chemical compounds of floral odours and insect visitation in relation to flowering cycles were studied to increase our understanding of the role of floral thermogenesis in the pollination biology of M. sprengeri. There were five distinct floral stages across the floral cycle of this species: pre-pistillate, pistillate, pre- staminate, staminate and post-staminate. Floral thermogenesis during anthesis and consisted of two distinct peaks: one at the pistillate stage and the other at the staminate stage. Insects of five families visited M. sprengeri during the floral cycle, and sap beetles (Epuraea sp., Nitidulidae) were determined to be the most effective pollinators, whereas bees (Apis cerana, Apidae) were considered to be occasional pollinators. A strong fragrance was released during thermogenesis, consisting of 18 chemical compounds. Although the relative proportions of these compounds varied at different floral stages across anthesis, linalool, 1-iodo-2-methylundecane and 2,2,6-trimethyl-6-vinyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-3-ol were dominant. -

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Characterization of two PEBP genes, SrFT and SrMFT, in thermogenic skunk cabbage Received: 09 March 2016 Accepted: 20 June 2016 (Symplocarpus renifolius) Published: 08 July 2016 Yasuko Ito-Inaba1, Hiromi Masuko-Suzuki2, Haruhiko Maekawa1,3, Masao Watanabe2 & Takehito Inaba3 Floral thermogenesis has been found in dozens of primitive seed plants and the reproductive organs in these plants produce heat during anthesis. Thus, characterization of the molecular mechanisms underlying flowering is required to fully understand the role of thermogenesis, but this aspect of thermogenic plant development is largely unknown. In this study, extensive database searches and cloning experiments suggest that thermogenic skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus renifolius), which is a member of the family Araceae, possesses two genes encoding phosphatidyl ethanolamine-binding proteins (PEBP), FLOWERING LOCUS T (SrFT) and MOTHER OF FT AND TFL1 (SrMFT). Functional analyses of SrFT and SrMFT in Arabidopsis indicate that SrFT promotes flowering, whereasSrMFT does not. In S. renifolius, the stage- and tissue-specific expression ofSrFT was more evident than that of SrMFT. SrFT was highly expressed in flowers and leaves and was mainly localized in fibrovascular tissues. In addition, microarray analysis revealed that, within floral tissues,SrFT was co-regulated with the genes associated with cellular respiration and mitochondrial function, including ALTERNATIVE OXIDASE gene proposed to play a major role in floral thermogenesis. Taken together, these data suggest that, among the PEBP genes, SrFT plays a role in flowering and floral development in the thermogenic skunk cabbage. Floral thermogenesis has been found in dozens of flowering plants including basal angiosperms (Nymphaeaceae and Schisandraceae)1–4, magnoliids (Magnoliaceae)5–7, monocots (Araceae)8–10, and eudicots (Nelumbonaceae and Rafflesiaceae)10,11. -

BMC Genomics 2014, 15:706 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2164/15/706 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Genome-wide transcriptome analysis of genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis between red and white strains of Magnolia sprengeri pamp Shou-Guo Shi1,2, Mei Yang1, Min Zhang1, Ping Wang1, Yong-Xiang Kang1 and Jian-Jun Liu1* Abstract Background: Magnolia sprengeri Pamp is one of the most highly valuable medicinal and ornamental plants of the Magnolia Family. The natural color of M. sprengeri is variable. The complete genome sequence of M. sprengeri is not available; therefore we sequenced the transcriptome of white and red petals of M. sprengeri using Illumina technology. We focused on the identity of structural and regulatory genes encoding the enzymes involved in the determination of flower color. Results: We sequenced and annotated a reference transcriptome for M. sprengeri, and aimed to capture the transcriptional determinanats of flower color. We sequenced a normalized cDNA library of white and red petals using Illumina technology. The resulting reads were assembled into 77,048 unique sequences, of which 28,243 could be annotated by Gene Ontology (GO) analysis, while 48,805 transcripts lacked GO annotation. The main enzymes involved in the flavonoid biosynthesis, such as phenylalanine ammonia-Lyase, cinnamat-4-Hydroxylase, dihydroflavonol-4-reductase, flavanone 3-hydroxylase, flavonoid-3′-hydroxylase, flavonol synthase, chalcone synthase and anthocyanidin synthase, were identified in the transcriptome. A total of 270 transcription factors were sorted into three families, including MYB, bHLH and WD40 types. Among these transcription factors, eight showed 4-fold or greater changes in transcript abundance in red petals compared with white petals. -
'Climate Change'?
Caerhays Castle Gardens and Climate Change What does the Caerhays Garden Diary (1897-Today) tells us about ‘Climate Change’? (The Garden Diary records events with each day of the year showing on just one page for ease of reference. It was written by JC Williams until 1939, Rt. Hon. Charles Williams until 1955 and Julian Williams until around 2010. More recently Charles Williams has continued the daily diary online with photographs on each day. The whole diary can be accessed online at http://thediary.caerhays.co.uk/.) We now live in a world where ‘climate change’ is an accepted reality by the vast majority of the population. Even without Greta Thunberg or Extinction Rebellion the political class clearly do believe that our climate will warm (or has already warmed) by 2% (2% of what?) in the coming decades. This has produced the mass hysteria which led to the Paris Climate Accord following which the UK government has stated, as a legal objective, that we must become carbon neutral by 2050 or earlier or else! A whole industry has grown up around supposedly green energy with all the vested interests therein. Greta may well be a Scandinavian PR creation for just that purpose, as a few serious journalists have attempted to point out, before being shouted down in the adulation. Carbon credits for Elton John’s air flights for our royal family members can readily be bought to ease consciences but already the scandal of such ‘credits’ is now being exposed in ‘The Times’ newspaper. In such a topsy turvy vacuum, driven by hysteria, we must all be seen to be doing the ‘right thing’. -

Third Great UBC Magnolia Sale Once again The Friends of the Garden at The UBC Botanical Garden and Centre for Plant Research are offering magnolia trees for sale. Examples of all these trees grow in the UBC Botanical Garden. We have three superb Magnolia sprengeri cultivars: Magnolia sprengeri ‘Diva’ is a favourite in the Asian Garden. The seed of this marvelous magnolia was collected in 1901 by Ernest ‘Chinese’ Wilson in western Hubei Province in China. A single seedling, grown at Caerhays Castle in Cornwall, England, was a rich pink. It was named ‘Diva’ for its astonishing beauty. It has elegant cup-shaped flowers that are rose-carmine outside and light pink inside. Price: $49.00 Magnolia sprengeri ‘Eric Savill’ (photograph below) is a small to medium-sized tree with dark cerise-pink flowers with 12 tepals that are a rich pink fading to pink inside. This Magnolia sprengeri ‘Diva’ seedling was named after the creator of the Savill Garden at Windsor Great Park. Price: $49.00 Magnolia sprengeri ‘Claret Cup’, another ‘Diva’ seedling, is a small tree. It has 8” (20cm.) scented saucer-shaped rosy purple flowers with 12 or 14 tepals. The inner surfaces are paler and fade to white as the flower opens. It was first grown at Bodnant, in Wales, one of the great gardens of the world. Price: $49.00 M.sprengeri ‘Diva’ is hardy to USDA zone 7, possibly 6 if favourably located. When mature it typically reaches 10m to 15m and has a spread of 7m to 10m. Also on offer is another large flowered magnolia that is one of the first to bloom each season at the UBC Botanical Garden. -
