Columbia University is one of the world’s most important centers of research and at the same time a distinctive and distinguished learning environment for undergraduates and graduate students in many scholarly and professional fields. LEARN WEST HARLEM 19 NOTABLE FACTS OF WEST HARLEM

• On September 16, 1776, the Battle of Harlem Heights was fought in Morningside Heights, with the most intense fighting occurring in a sloping wheat field that is now the location of Barnard College. A plaque by the Columbia University gate on 117th Street and Broadway commemorates this battle.

• The Morningside Heights area of West Harlem is known as the “Academic Acropolis of New York” since many educational institutions are located in the neighborhood including Columbia University, Barnard College, and New York Theological Seminary.

• Columbia University’s 309 Havemeyer Hall is the most filmed college classroom ever, as reported by Scouting NY and numerous university sites. 309 Havemeyer has apparently been seen in over a dozen films, including the first three Spider-Man films, Kinsey, and Spike Lee’s Malcolm X.

• The Teacher’s College Pool is the oldest in New York City. Built in 1904, this is considered the oldest pool still in use in New York City, and one of the oldest in the country.

• Research for the Manhattan Project, that led to the creation of the atomic bomb, was conducted in Schermerhorn Hall and Pupin Hall on Broadway and 120th Street.

• With only a small logo to hint at the building’s past, Columbia’s “Studebaker” building is just that–a former automobile factory. Built in 1923 by the Studebaker automobile company, the facility served as a finishing factory and distribution center for the highly coveted and expensive luxury vehicles that made Studebaker a household name.

• The Cotton Club, located in West Harlem, was the most famous Harlem night spot where musicians such as Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington played Dixie, the blues and developed the improvisational style of music called Jazz.

• NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) is located in West Harlem. Research at the GISS emphasizes a broad study of Global Change; the natural and anthropogenic changes in our environment that affect the habitability of our planet.

• Saint John the Divine claims to be the largest Cathedral in the world and, measured by length or internal volume, it is one of the five largest church buildings in the world. Additionally, it possesses the largest rose window in the United States. The window, which is the fifth largest in the world, was constructed out of 10,000 pieces of stained glass.
