The centenary of the sale of Quethiock Parish is coming up in 2019. If you would be interested in working on ways to commemorate this event, please contact Susan at 01579 348 674.

A letter from: Bal Croce, Hammett Farm, Quethiock PL14 3SJ concerning the 100th Anniversary of the sale of the Parish of Quethiock. Back at the time of the First World War, the entire Parish of Quethiock used to be part of the Pentillie Estate, but due to debts probably incurred by death duty tax, the whole village and Blunts and Trehunist and over 30 farms in the surrounding area were put up for sale. On the 14th August 1919, an auction was held in Plymouth and most of the tenant farmers, many of whom had hoped to buy the farms they had worked for generations, lost out. Many of you may be familiar with the story from the book by Mary French ‘A Victorian Village’, or the facsimile of the sales catalogue Robert Leishman published in 2009. Many old Quethiock families had to find new farms and moved away, but a new generation started a new life here. Next year will be the 100th anniversary of this momentous event for the people in and around Quethiock past and present. Some of us who live in houses that were part of that history thought we should commemorate this anniversary, and we are in discussion as to what form this may take. I am asking for people who now reside in these farms, mills, barns and houses, who would like to get involved, to contact us with any ideas and / or contributions, or to just let us know if you would be interested in attending any event that may be held. One project I am hoping to undertake is to visit the 29 farms pictured in the original 1919 catalogue, and with your permission, to take a modern colour photo, and then list who have been the owners and tenants who have passed through these properties over the last 100 years. At the present time, I am thinking of using this source material to have a Quethiock Village History website established, to which other locals could contribute photos, documents or just written memoirs.

If you are happy to let me proceed with this project, or if indeed you don’t want your home included, I would be most grateful if you would call me:01579 388 958, 07949 591 783, [email protected] You should also feel free to contact Susan Concannon at East Trehunist Farmhouse on 01579 348 674 or email: [email protected]
