Dear fellow congregants, There are many wonderful things happening at CBJ in the coming month. On May 22, the Sisterhood honors its annual “stars”. This year’s very deserving honorees are Judi Saltiel and Nicole Weinstein. I congratulate them and hope that our congregation will turn out en masse to celebrate and thank them for all they do for our synagogue. The following day the celebrating continues with the Uf Ruf of Rabbi Sam and his lovely fiancée, Dora. It is our honor and pleasure to host this occasion a week before the couple ties the knot. Anyone interested in being a sponsor for the Kiddush luncheon should call the office. Also, on May 23, we usher in the festival of Shavuot with services, dessert and a study session in the evening (time TBA) followed by 9:00 a.m. services on Sunday Other programs going on in the month of May are continuations of events that started in the past few months. I wish to thank the membership committee under the excellent leadership of Rochelle Maltz for introducing the “Host a Shabbat Dinner” and “Tot Shabbat Programs”. I want to thank Rochelle and the Saltiel family for graciously agreeing to be the first hosts and for all the effort that they expended in insuring a wonderful kosher meal and the warmest hospitality for the welcoming of Shabbat. I would like to note that just as the hosting families take on a responsibility of preparing or catering a Shabbat meal and welcoming guests, that the individuals and families who wish to be hosted have an obligation to timely RSVP and if they make reservations to keep them. The Tot Shabbat program has been very well received during the past 2 months and at the risk of excluding some hard working people I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Susan Bender, Jessica Bruschi, Joyce Lieb, Arlene Rachman and Rabbi Sam. Special thanks to Rachel Waldman and Joshua Seidman, two college students, who bring music and fun to the program. I anticipate that by this time next month I will be introducing our Synagogue’s new in-house caterer. Stay tuned for that update. Finally, I am pleased to announce that Shabbat services, as well as the recent Passover services, have been relatively well attended and we have been fulfilling our mission of providing ritual observances as well as enabling our CBJ family to observe Yahrzheits for their departed loved ones. This mission can only be met with the participation of our entire community. Providing weekly and holiday services, and a vibrant Hebrew school requires significant time and effort by a very committed small core of people and a good deal of money. We are fortunate to have talented and dedicated clergy and teachers and they deserve to be timely paid. To make sure that we can pay our capable professionals and meet our other expenses to keep the doors open, we need all of our congregants and Hebrew school families to meet their financial obligations. If you haven’t done so as yet, please remit your dues and/or fees immediately to get us through the dog days of summer. Best Wishes for a great month, Marvin Men’s club message

As so many of us happily welcome Spring, we are looking forward to our Sisterhood Stars Erev Shabbat Service on Friday night, MAY 22, 2015. We are most proud to announce our 2015 SISTERHOOD STARS ARE NICOLE WEINSTEIN and JUDY SALTIEL---two women who through their effort, ideas and creativity have added so much to CBJ's thriving Hebrew School. We invite everyone to attend services on May 22nd to honor these two fabulous women. CBJ members will read inspirational poems through- out the evening service. If you have a reading that is meaningful to you and would like to share it with us on Sisterhood Sabbath, please call Arleen Klapper @718-698-0120. We would be delighted to have you join us and take part in the program. The following is part of a letter that we received in April, 2015 from the Women's League for Conservative Judaism: "It is with great pleasure that we are notifying you that the Sisterhood of Congregation B'nay Jeshurun will be receiving a milestone award for 50 years of affiliation with Women's League for Conservative Judaism. The award will be presented at the Garden State Region Conference on Sunday, May 3, 2015 to be held Highland Park Conservative Temple-Congregation Anshe Emeth in Highland Park, N.J." We feel so honored to receive this Award. Your membership in Sisterhood follows a long and proud history of dedicated women throughout the years. Sisterhood continues to support our CAR POOL TO SHUL program. If you know of a congregant who would like to attend services or other events, and is unable to drive, we ask that you think of them when coming to the Synagogue. Consider calling up that person and offering a ride to CBJ. Some people may be reluctant to ask for a lift, and an offer from you would mean a great deal. It is a wonderful mitz- vah to perform. Thanks to all the members who are already doing this. Looking forward to seeing you on Friday evening, May 22nd for SISTERHOOD STARS EREV SHABBAT SERVICES. LET US ALL JOIN TOGETHER TO HONOR NICOLE WEINSTEIN AND JUDY SALTIEL. We promise you and inspirational evening and a SPECIAL ONEG SHABBAT.

HAPPY SPRING! Arleen Klapper and Arlene Rachman Co-Presidents of Sisterhood “SISTERHOOD’S STARS”

~HONORING~

May 29th Rabbi Sam sharing with the children at the Tot Shabbat…..

Our Hebrew School attended the Israel Independence celebration at the . Many of our CBJ students enjoyed an evening of community, pride and fun! It was wonderful to celebrate with our teachers, congregants, students and from many other Staten Island synagogues.

Our teachers assisted at the "Negev Table". Children stopped by our table to make beautiful pictures using colored sand. COJO did a wonderful job planning this large scale event.

Youth Group

On the weekend of April 24-26 close to 200 USYers from all over New Jersey, and a few from Staten Island, gath- ered at the Raddison Hotel in Piscataway, NJ. The theme of the weekend was "Hagalil Goes to Hollywood." We walked the red carpet, participated in entertainment based programs, and discussed and analyzed everything from biblical stars to how Jews are portrayed in movies.

During the weekend there was also Regional Elections, awards given out to USY chapters, and a lot of heartfelt farewells to seniors who are attending their final conven- tion. On Sunday morning the new Regional Executive Board was inducted. I now have the honor of serving as the Hagalil Regional Communications Vice President. Earning a position in USY is not simply a popularity contest, and comes with a lot of responsibility. It is a lot of hard work as this is truly an organization that is run by the members.

My father would always say that, "you get out of USY/ what you put into it." I now see the amount of work that goes into making these events successful. The work, overseen by the Regional Youth Director, is done by the members. Over time it becomes a part of who you are, inspires you to learn more, and become a better Jewish leader. I hope that the youth of our temple get more involved in creating a chapter that will once again be worthy of recognition, and not only go to an event to pass time, but make this a part of their lives. The way I have.

-Zachary MonteLeon, Staten Island USY President, Hagalil Regional Communications Vice President

HAGALIL KADIMA & USY ENCAMPMENT 2015 August 23rd-30th MAKE FRIENDSHIPS THAT LAST A LIFETIME!

What is Encampment? Encampment is an exciting, end of summer positive Jewish experience. It provides Jewish teenagers entering grades 6-12 an informal opportunity to make new friends and renew friendships that they have made at previous activities. At the same time, the participants will live in a completely Conservative Jewish setting. Program: Encampment does in one week what most camps do in 8 weeks! Highlights of our program include:

· Talent Show · Social Action Programs · Creative Services · Maccabiah · Drama · Intramural Sports · Special Senior Programs (USY) · Arts & Crafts · Pool activities · Chapter Programming Workshops · Israel Programs

Staff: The staff is comprised of Rabbis, teachers, youth advisors, and a select group of young adults who make up our bunk counselors and specialty staff. Many are former USYers who return to give back something of themselves to the organization. What participants have said…..

“Encampment was the best 7 (or so) “This was my first encampment, and I “It was awesome!! One of the best days since Genesis. “ came in as a senior, and I had so experiences of my life!” much fun and made so many friends. “I loved camp soooo much! I miss Everyone was so willing to get to “It was so much fun. I made friends my new friends and I can’t wait to know me even though I was new, and that will last a lifetime.“ go back next summer!” I felt very comfortable!”

Facilities: HaGalil’s Encampment takes place on the grounds of the well-known B’nai Brith Perlman Camp in the Poconos, located in Starlight, Pennsylvania. It is a certified Kosher camp.

How Do I Apply? Deposit information and applications will be available shortly. Please email USY and Kadima at [email protected] and we will send you the information as soon as it’s ready or email Bruce MonteLeon at cbjy- [email protected].

Have Questions? You can reach Dassy Mark, Hagalil Youth Director during business hours at 732-738-7960 or email her at: [email protected]. You can email Bruce at [email protected] or talk to Zachary, Daniel, Ava, Jes- sica, Lilah, Hannah, & Isabel. To check out all that happens at encampment, go to our website at: www.hagalilusy.com/

*It is safe to say that the majority of CBJ members who have either had a teenager grow up at CBJ or currently have a teenager at CBJ have sent their kids to Encampment….ask around and they will tell you how AWESOME it is!

The IRIS SWEIG MEMORIAL GARDEN made its debut in October, 2006 on the grounds of CONGREGATION B'NAI JESHURUN, after one and a half years of planning.

Named "A GARDEN OF PEACE"....GAN V'SHALOM" the project was a fund-raising idea conceived and managed by SISTER- HOOD. Professionally designed and planted by Weisner Brothers Nursery, the garden is a very peaceful place, sooth- ing to the eye and contributing to the lovely natural sur- roundings of Congregation B'nai Jeshurun.

The Landscaping plan consists of four "POCKET GARDENS" planted with shrubs and colorful perennial specimens on curved raised beds. Two existing tall pine trees were incorpo- rated into the garden with benches and plant mate- rial surrounding them. The fourth pocket garden ( in the middle) consists of twelve large stones placed in a circular pattern, depicting the "TWELVE TRIBES OF ISRAEL".

Sisterhood's MISSION was to create a sense of peacefulness where members could sit and reflect on the rich history of Ju- daism and all that it teaches us on how to live our lives. We hoped it would be a place where we might enjoy some feelings of calm in the midst of the turbulent world in which we live. Sitting on a bench in the garden, surrounded by nature, each person might choose to offer their own individual prayer for PEACE in our time.

The IRIS SWEIG MEMORIAL GARDEN is named after a dedi- cated past-president of Sisterhood who also served many years on the Congregation's Board of Trustees. Iris, who was an English teacher at I.S. 72 for twenty-five years, is remem- bered as a woman who gave unselfishly of her time and ef- fort in many areas of the Synagogue.

We invite you to visit the Garden often and experience this peaceful oasis nestled so close to our beautiful Synagogue. Shavuot services Saturday May 23 8 p.m. Sunday May 24 9 a.m. Monday May 25 9 a.m. Yizkor 10:15
