Template Revision: 03 Item 3: Project Progress Update Andrew Cockcroft Senior Manager – Community Relations 3 Covid-19: Protecting the Workforce and Community • We have been able to slowly increase numbers in the last few months as we have gained experience with new ways of working. We now have around 4,500 people on site in a 24 hour period – which is still below our pre-pandemic levels • Preparations and plan in place for winter and potential ‘second-wave’ • A new testing centre is operational and there will be testing of all new starters. Robust mitigation measures remain in place • Thermal imaging cameras on entry • There is a short film on our website, • Protective screens have been installed in our canteens explaining the measures now in place: • Reduced number of passengers and mandatory face https://www.edfenergy.com/energy/nuclear- coverings on buses new-build-projects/hinkley-point-c/news- • Bus services for workers are focused on our park and ride views/coronavirus-update-19-october sites 4 • HPC testing facility in place Maintaining Progress OUR PROJECT GOALS 2019 OUR PROJECT GOALS 2020 ➢ Goal 1: Reactor building ➢ Tunnel Boring Machine ready embedded safety related to launch pipework installed ➢ J0, Start of Reactor Building construction ➢ Goal 2: J0 for Unit 2 – start of reactor building construction ➢ Engineering for Inner Containment Lift 1 Complete ➢ Goal 3: Unit 1 Feed water tank manufacturing complete ➢ Start of Manufacturing of Pressuriser for Unit 1 in ENSA ➢ Goal 4: Engineering design for Workshop reactor building internal structure complete 5 Nuclear Island – Unit 1 November 2020 January 2020 • Good progress on Unit 1 with the containment building now being constructed • Teams have now started the installation of the first ‘walled-in’ tanks. Marks the start of the MEH Phase • During the pandemic period 65 walls have been poured, 3 suspended slabs and 3 pits • Preparations for the lifting of the first steel ring liner. 6 Unit 2 Liner Cup • Lifted by Big Carl, just nine months after the same lift for the first reactor, construction of the 170- tonne “liner cup” was 30% quicker than the identical part on Unit 1 • The liner cup is the base for the reactor’s steel containment which is being prefabricated in five parts • This innovation means welding can take place in covered bunkers protected from weather, helping to improve quality and efficiency • The liner cup for Hinkley Point C’s second unit was built in 39 days versus 57 for the first. 7 Nuclear Island – Unit 2 November 2020 January 2020 • June 2020 - the completion of the 49,000-tonne base for unit 2 on schedule - meeting a target date set more than four years ago. The final concrete pour of 8,991m3 set a new UK record for a single, continuous pour • Sump Suction Line (SSL) pipework installation ongoing – (blue pipework). 8 Conventional Island Unit 1 November 2020 January 2020 TG columns • Installation well underway with concrete pouring commencing • 3 of 15 installed • 17m high, 40t per unit • Will support the turbines (which are the largest in the world). 9 Tunnelling • “Mary” is c.3km out under the Bristol Channel as she nears completion for the first unit’s cooling water tunnel • Our two other TBMs are also now in position and preparing for launch for the outfall tunnel and intake tunnel 2. Unit 2 TBM lift in to position Lift of ‘Emmeline’ outfall View from 1km inside U1 intake 10 Arrival of TBM for Unit 2 TBM into HCT shaft tunnel looking seaward Proposed Dredging in 2021 • We are applying to dredge sediment from the seabed in 2021, ahead of placing intake and outfall structures for the power station’s cooling water system • The sediment we and others are dredging in the Bristol Channel is typical of the sediment found anywhere in the Bristol Channel. EDF is one of many companies - over many decades - dredging and depositing sediment in the Bristol Channel • Previous testing has shown that the sediment poses no risk to human health or the environment • The mud and sediment is again being tested before it is dredged. The testing has been adjusted as a result of public consultation and will: – Go above and beyond internationally recognised best practice and now include a full Environmental Impact Assessment – take more samples and at greater depth Dredging is required in order to put the intake and outfall structures in place – include a greater range of analysis to test for all radioactive particles. 11 Pre-Submitted Questions – Project Update • “‘Project Progress’ makes no mention of the serious accident on the site on 10 June when a silo at the batching plant collapsed. Where is the EdeF report on the investigation into this potentially catastrophic event and when will it be presented to ONR for external scrutiny?” • “HPC Workers from South Wales have been travelling to the Avonmouth P&R and boarding a coach to the site there. There is no mention of them in the current Construction Workforce Travel Plan. How are workers from Wales getting to site now?” - submitted by Roy Pumfrey – Stop Hinkley Action Group HPC Transport Forum 26 Nov 2020 | Community Relations | NOT PROTECTIVELY MARKED © Copyright 2019 NNB Generation Company (HPC) Limited. Template Revision: 03 Pre-Submitted Questions – Project Update • “Is there an update on 5.3 from Draft Minutes from 16 July 2020. “When can we see the reinstatement of the Bridgwater to Minehead Community Bus?” Also When reinstated could this be diverted, so that from Bridgwater it travels on its existing route (as far as West Quantoxhead) and then down the A39 as far as Williton and then on via the B3191, turning right by the Masons Arms to Doniford to recommence its existing route, reversing this route on returning from Minehead?” – submitted by Cllr. Rosemary Woods - Williton Parish Council • “When will the Community Bus service be resumed?” - submitted by Cllr Hugh Davies - County Councillor for Williton, Watchet and Stogursey • “Fly parking - We are enjoying a period of no fly parkers in Combwich as employees are catching transport from the park and rides, can this continue when the Covid pandemic is over?” - submitted by Andy Darch – Otterhampton Parish Council HPC Transport Forum 26 Nov 2020 | Community Relations | NOT PROTECTIVELY MARKED © Copyright 2019 NNB Generation Company (HPC) Limited.
