Contributor Limelight: Dan Nailen – Soundwaves From The Underground Podcast Host Dan Nailen recently added his baritone enthusiasm to SLUG’s podcast, Soundwaves From The Underground, as the new host. Nailen is no stranger to Utah media, having formerly been a writer for the Salt Lake Tribune for over eight years, as well as the arts and entertainment editor for Salt Lake Magazine and managing editor of Salt Lake City Weekly. These days, Nailen has stepped away from his publishing and editorial roles and has taken on the role of Communications and Marketing Manager for the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah, where he writes and edits most of the press releases, brochures and catalogs that come from the business school. You can also find him around town going to whatever plays and shows he can get to for his own blog, SLCene. com, and as a freelance writer for Salt Lake Magazine. When he’s not pounding away on a keyboard or recording an episode, Nailen enjoys fine whiskey over a book, usually reading up on the culture of the American West. Like enough—so, really, stop acting so most of your readers, I am in my entitled. Given your anti-pater- mid-twenties, and have had difficulty nalistic musings about your post- obtaining a job. I am contributing much 20-something elders, you are of this lack of employment on the part clearly a bleeding-heart liberal, of age-ism. Unsorted The Long Version: I think one of the joys of Twitter, besides updates from your favorite celebrities, is the lack of organization. Left untended, a Twitter feed is a Burroughs cut-up of genres switching every 140 characters, a chronological panoply of near-Cassavetean shifts in tone where the only thing linking any two adjacent posts is the time they were conceived by utterly separate souls. You find something funny (or attempting to be so) shoved up against serious matters just a tweet away from sports or politics or any other topic under the sun. None of the tweets in this section have anything to do with each other and maybe that’s as it should be. I genuinely worry that my grouping of the later ones by subject sort of gives away the joke a bit, or robs you of that crucial element of surprise. I mean, what’s funnier, a joke about ducks after a joke about bears, or the fifth or so joke about ducks in a row? (I’d like it on record that I totally didn’t realize I was typing “ducks in a row” until it happened.) (I’d also like it on record that I do actually know a few jokes about ducks, for what it’s worth.) (Anyway.) I wonder what sound effect plays when crickets tell a joke that no one likes.
