The City of Logan: Rich in history, creative in spirit Follow the trail from Underwood to Eagleby and discover public art and heritage unique to the City of Logan. You will see classic houses, notable shops, historic churches and cemeteries, and inspiring sculptures. With more than 20 sites to visit, you could create your own ‘highlights’ tour, or gather some friends, pack the car and explore them all.

1 Underwood was developed from the 1960s. Bruno Laspina built his fruit shop in 1972 in the area’s first strip of shops. He mounted the seven-ton World War II field artillery gun on the roof and called it The Big Gun Fruit Mart. 2 Logan Road, named after Captain Patrick Logan, was once named Slack’s Track after a grazier who drove his cattle to market along an old Aboriginal path that passed between Mt Gravatt and Mt Thompson to One Mile Swamp (Woolloongabba). 3 Find out about arts and heritage at the purpose-built Logan North Library. Explore its accessibility centre, see art displays or participate in a workshop. 4 Regeneration sculpture by Matt Tobin reflects the City of Logan’s diverse and evolving community. The uncurling fronds at the top represent nature and the coloured stem reflects the city’s many vibrant communities. 6 8

5 For the young at heart, FUNderwood Hollow, Australia’s largest Spielart adventure playground, can be found at Underwood Park. 6 Chung Tian Buddhist Temple means ‘Middle Heaven’. It provides a peaceful and spiritual venue to celebrate cultural diversity and multi-faith harmony. 7 Springwood Park has a lush, tropical garden and manicured lawns, barbecue facilities, a playground and picnic area. Two 8 memorials honour servicemen and women. One features a bronze statue dedicated to the Indigenous Light Horsemen of the Boer, First and Second World Wars. 9 The Dennis family were the first Europeans to settle at Daisy Hill, around 1870. This location contains the burial site for the Dennis family and was established in mid-1874. 10 Logging in Daisy Hill Conservation Park officially ceased in 1991, but evidence of logging and other industries can still be found, including remnant charcoal pits, mining shafts and mounds from an old rifle range. A visit to the Koala Centre is a must! 11 Constructed in 1865 as the Church of the Assumption, the church was dismantled, floated down the river to Waterford and renamed St James. It was again relocated in 1978 to service the new parish of Daisy Hill as St Declan’s. 12 Bright yellow boats in Timothy Park mark the start of a walk along Slacks Track to Garoona Park. 15 17

13 At the time of completion, Logan’s IKEA store was the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. Bright yellow boats mark Slacks Creek, which flows behind the store. The Aboriginal name for Slacks Creek is thought to be Mungarree. 14 Heritage registered St Mark’s Anglican Church was constructed in 1901, after the cemetery was established. 15 Sulphur crested cockatoos feature on the mural overlooking Shailer Pioneer Park, where you can find barbeques, a skate park, and watch for wildlife. 16 Logan Hyperdome Library is a great place to go. Try the TLC (Tech.Learn.Create) Lounge to explore new technologies, do 3-D printing, or check out the Logan Hyperdome Library’s drive-through library – a first in the Southern Hemisphere. 17 Local artist Alex Vlasoff was commissioned to make the sculpture Friendship tree to mark 30 years of Rotary Club activity in Logan and 100 years of Rotary International. 18 Carbrook Lutheran Cemetery was developed in 1875. It is the last resting place of early German settlers who lived in the area. 19 Heritage-listed former Carbrook State School opened as Gramzow Provisional School in 1877 and was a primary school for 110 years. It is one of the earliest structures in the area and has strong associations with the German settlers of the district. In 1916 during World War I, Gramzow was renamed Carbrook. 20

It is heritage listed and now a private home. 21 In the 1860s and 1870s, wharves were built along the near Skinners Park and a ship-building industry thrived. The largest schooner built on the Logan River, The Pride of the Logan, was built near here in 1872. 22 In 1931 The Red Bridge opened as a toll bridge enabling people to cross the river from Loganholme to Eagleby. It is a local landmark. 23 Beenleigh Cemetery dates back to 1872 and contains an official Commonwealth War Grave, graves of more than 50 returned serviceman, early European settlers and an unknown Aboriginal person. 24 Eagleby Cemetery opened about 1854 and was formerly run by the Bethesda Lutheran Church. It is one of the earliest cemeteries in the district. 25 Eagleby Wetlands Reserve was rehabilitated to preserve the natural environment and for the community’s enjoyment.
