In today’s Gospel, taken from the sixth chapter of Luke, Jesus offers a very challenging, seemingly im- possible approach to daily life. “Love your enemies, COLLECTION FOR FEBRUARY 18 do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. Jesus explains this in the next verse of this pas- sage when He says, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” There is nothing wrong with loving oneself since God loves us and has made us in His own image and likeness. Jesus is simply asking that we also approach others, and the sharing of our gifts, with this same attitude. He is giving us a definition here of real love, a steward’s love!

INTERESTEDINTERESTED ININ BECOMIBECOMINGNG AA MEMBERMEMBER OFOF THE CATHEDRAL OF ? Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. A person becomes a member of the through Baptism. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Confor- mation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain mini- mum requirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how the Cathedral of Saint Patrick looks upon them in relation to parish membership.

 ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eu- charistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance enve- lopes are the primary way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, parishioners must place their enve- lopes in the collection basket every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial contribution. If a parishioner gives online or prefers to place cash in the offertory basket, an empty Mass attendance envelope should still be placed in the basket with "I attended Mass" checked.

 RECEIPT OF THE SACRAMENTS. The third & fourth precept of the Church states the faithful must ensure prepara- tion for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation at least once a year, and the reception of Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter season (CCC #2042) and join in fast and abstinence during Lent.

 SUPPORT OF THE CHURCH. The fifth precept of the Church states that the faithful have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to their

abilities in a regular, identifiable and meaningful way.

SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, February 24: St. Adela—Widow St. Adela was born in 1067 as the youngest daughter of William the Conqueror, the king of England. In the year 1080, she married Stephen III, with whom she had eleven children. Adela utilized her great wealth for good by giving away countless sums to Catholic churches and . In 1095, when her husband took on a leadership role in the First Crusades, Adela managed government affairs at home. Following the death of her husband, she entered the convent, and lived the rest of her life as a following the rule of St. Benedict.

Monday, February 25: St. Callistus Caravario—Martyr St. Callistus was born in Cuorgné, Italy on June 18, 1903. He attended a school opened by St. John Bosco, and was a regu- lar participant at daily Mass. Thanks to the Salesian priests who staffed the school, he was encouraged to pursue the priest- hood. When Bishop Versiglia visited his school and spoke about missions to China, he decided that he wanted to become a missionary. Callistus traveled to Macao and Timor, where he taught the Catholic Faith to the children. After being or- dained, he was placed in charge of the missions of Linchow. During this time, persecutions against Christians were grow- ing in China. On February 25, 1930, Callistus was on a boat with Bishop Versiglia when it was boarded by a group of communist pirates. The pirates wanted to take the girls on board, but Callistus and the bishop refused to let them. The two men were then shot to death after hearing each other’s confessions. Tuesday, February 26: St. Porphyrius of Gaza—Bishop St. Porphyrius was born around the year 346 in Thessalonica, Macedonia to a wealthy family. When he turned 25, he traveled to the Nitrian desert in Skete, Egypt where he lived as a hermit under the leadership of St. Macarius the Great. He then spent time along the Jordan River in Palestine, before finally coming to Jerusalem. When he began experiencing problems with his legs, he prayed for healing. While in prayer, he had a vision of Christ coming down from the cross who said to him, “Take this wood and preserve it.” Porphyrius was healed of his condition. He became a priest, and was later made Bishop of Gaza. As bishop, he successfully rooted out pagan religions in his territory. He built a Catholic church upon the site of the largest pagan temple to signify the triumph of Christ.

Wednesday, February 27: St. Leander of —Bishop St. Leander was born in Cartagena, Spain around the year 534. He became a Benedictine monk, and in 579 was named Bishop of Seville. Leander was successful in converting the king’s two sons, Hermene- gild and Reccared, which angered the Arian king, King Leovigild, who forced Leander into exile. Follow- ing the death of Leovigild, and the ascension of Reccared to the throne, Leander returned to Seville and continued his work combating the errors of Arianism. Leander was the first bishop to recite the Nicene Creed during Mass, which eventually become the universal norm for the Catholic Church.

Thursday, February 28: St. Hillary—Pope Pope St. Hillary was born in Sardinia, Italy around the year 400. Hillary served as assistant to Pope Leo the Great, who sent him on a mission to attend an unofficial council taking place without papal authority, re- sulting in Hillary being physically attacked when he appeared at the council. Following the death of Leo, Hillary was elected to the papacy on November 19, 461. During his papacy, Hillary worked to promote Christian unity in France and Spain, combating various heresies through councils he called in 462 and 465. He also publicly rebuked the emperor for his endorsement of the Macedonian heresy. Hillary renovated the basilica of St. John Lateran, and constructed numerous churches, libraries, and convents. Friday, March 1: St. David of Wales—Bishop St. David was born around the year 500 to a royal family in Pembrokeshire, Wales. He was ordained a priest and became involved with missionary work. He founded numerous monasteries, including a in Menevia where the monks practiced a strict rule of manual labor, prayer, and drinking only water. He was elected primate of the church in Cambria, and was consecrated archbishop by the of Jerusalem during a visit to the Holy Land. As bishop, he combated the errors of Pelagian- ism. The saint continues to be remembered in Wales each year during “St. David’s Day” celebrations. Saturday, March 2: St. Angela of the Cross— St. Angela was born on January 30, 1846 into a large pious family in Seville, Spain. Angela began working at a young age handling shoe repairs. When she was 19, she attempted to join the , but was turned down due to poor health. She then tried to join the Daughters of Charity, but had to withdraw when her health became an issue again. At this time, she was advised by her spiritual director to provide care for poor cholera patients. Angela had a vision one day of Christ on the cross with a bare cross resting in front of him. She then began to reside three women in community, and together they formed the Congregation of the Cross on August 2, 1875. Members of this new religious order devoted their lives to caring for the poor and dying. At the time of her passing, 23 convents had been established. Update: Event fully booked! This year, the theme of the Diocesan Support Appeal (DSA) is “We Are His Hands.” This is a heartfelt re- minder and opportunity to put our faith into action to help those in need. It also beautifully reminds us of the mission of the ministries supported by the DSA, and what they do for thousands of our brothers and sisters across western North Carolina.

The DSA provides support for more than 20 services that Catholic Charities of Charlotte offers throughout the diocese. The appeal also provides funding for Vocations, the Housing Ministry, Education Ministries (providing over 30 different services), Multicultural Ministries, and the Eucharistic Congress. Some of these ministries provide services beyond the scope of individual parishes and some exist for the sole purpose of as- sisting parishes in our own mission to teach, evangelize and serve you, our parishioners.

Thousands of people across the diocese benefit because of the DSA-funded ministries. To help support these ministries, each parish or mission has been assessed a specific amount of money. Those that surpass their as- sessed targets receive rebates of 100% of the amount received over their target. If a parish falls short of the target, then they must pay the shortfall from the parish operating budget. Among those served are:  19,000+ clients of Catholic Charities Diocese of Charlotte  300,000+ minority parishioners through multicultural ministries  120 permanent deacons in formation  28 seminarians in formation DONATE  46,200 children & adults in Faith Formation TODAY  7,000 grade school & high school students in Catholic Schools charlottediocese.org/dsa  6,700 teenagers through Youth Ministry

If a parish falls short of the target, then they must pay the shortfall from the parish operating budget.
