Covering an area of 181.300 square kilometers, the Atacama Desert enclose to the East by the main chain of the Andes Mountain, while to the west lies a secondary mountain range called Cordillera de la Costa, this is a natural wall between the central part of the continent and the Pacific Ocean; large Volcanoes dominate the landscape some of them have been inactive since many years while some still present volcanic activity. -

LUDLOW 38 Curatorial Residencies 38 Ludlow Street · New York 10002 · ☎ +1 212 228 6848 · [email protected] CATALINA PARRA May 22 – June 26, 2011 Reception for the artist: Sunday May 22, 1-6pm MINI/Goethe-Institut Curatorial Residencies Ludlow 38 is pleased to announce a solo show by Catalina Parra. For this exhibition Parra has selected works made between 1969 and today, stemming from extended periods in Germany, Chile, Canada and the United States. The exhibition opens with a series of crayon drawings executed by Parra at the beginning of her career near Lake Constance, Germany. Also presented are early collages and photographs including material that led to Parra’s contribution for Manuscritos (1975), the fi rst publication of art criticism after the Chilenean military coup of 1973. Relying on a variety of media including drawing, collage and fi lm, Parra has demonstrated an extraordinary sensibility towards the socio-political affairs that take place around us. As artist Coco Fusco outlined in a 1991 essay that was published in the catalogue for Parra’s solo show at the Intar Gallery, Parra “concentrates on the process of coming to terms with information that connotes something different than what it denotes.” With an aesthetic awareness that draws parallels to the work of Hannah Höch and John Heartfi eld, the artist repeatedly begins her constructions from newspaper advertisements to create hand-sewn collages and mixed media works. Her newspaper collages are executed in series form, each series containing multiple variations. The exhibition at Ludlow 38 features pieces from a number of these series including Coming your way (Banff, 1994), The Human touch (1989) and Here, there, everywhere (1992). -

Barr-Melej This dissertation examines the struggle between Chile’s opposition press and the dictatorial regime of Augusto Pinochet Ugarte (1973-1990). It argues that due to Chile’s tradition of a pluralistic press and other factors, and in bids to strengthen the regime’s legitimacy, Pinochet and his top officials periodically demonstrated considerable flexibility in terms of the opposition media’s ability to publish and distribute its products. However, the regime, when sensing that its grip on power was slipping, reverted to repressive measures in its dealings with opposition-media outlets. Meanwhile, opposition journalists challenged the very legitimacy Pinochet sought and further widened the scope of acceptable opposition under difficult circumstances. Ultimately, such resistance contributed to Pinochet’s defeat in the 1988 plebiscite, initiating the return of democracy. -

Mario Gomez was born in 1968 in Concepcion, Chile. He attended the School of Art at Pontifical Catholic University of Chile to study under Chile’s influential painters, such as Balmes, Gracia Barrios, and Ciengfuegos. Gomez works are in museum collections including the National Fine Arts Museum, Santiago, Chile; Mucsarnok Museum, Budapest, Hungary; Sogetsu Museum, Tokyo, Japan; Revolution Museum, Moscow, Russia; Maisond’ Amerique Latine, Paris, France; and Osaka Contemporary Art Center, Osaka, Japan And in notable private collections of former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, renowned author Isabel Allende and many others. Gomez’s paintings beckon the viewers to their own childhood. His vibrant work breathes life and joy. The source of his images is often autobiographical and reminiscent of the fantasies of his childhood. Playful objects such as the juggler, the ballerina, the horse, intermingle with simple architectural constructions, influenced by the literature of Latin-American magic realism. He creates a world of fantasy, reassembling familiar images and spaces, creating a new synthesis. The artist describes his work as communicating without saying the obvious, as that would eliminate the attraction of the painting. The protagonist is the human figure, interacting with fundamental worries and fundamental joy – works of art that involve the viewer with the artist in an interpretation of life.
