September started with the launch of Creative Saskatchewan, which would not only change the way SaskMusic is funded, but also the other cultural sectors in the province including visual arts and craft, publishing, screen-based media and performing arts. The biggest change for SaskMusic in this transition was the departure of our CEO JP Ellson, as he moved on to take the CEO position at Creative Saskatchewan. I would personally like to take this opportunity to thank JP for all his hard work, and the vision he provided to SaskMusic over the years. Thankfully we still get to work with him very closely in his new position! Thanks again JP. That, of course, left a void in the leadership of SaskMusic. We were fortunate that we had the best staff pos- sible to hold the fort during our search for a new Executive Director. After putting out a cross-country job posting for we received over 70 applications, we narrowed it down to the top candidates. The hiring com- mittee, myself included, were so very pleased that we had such passionate, driven individuals wanting this role with SaskMusic. It was my pleasure to announce at the 2014 JUNO Awards Weekend in Winnipeg that Derek Bachman had accepted the Executive Director position. The reception he and the board received dur- ing that weekend only solidified that we had made the right choice. Under Derek’s leadership, the staff of SaskMusic has never been stronger and the Board could not be happier with the great work they have been doing. On behalf of the Board, we can’t thank the staff and management enough for all the hard work and dedication they have put into SaskMusic. We know that we have the best people in the industry working for our members. I also want to thank the Board of Directors of SaskMusic for all of their work over the past year. This has to be one of the best boards I have ever worked with. Every board member engages and contributes, which only helps to strengthen the organization. I am so very proud to be on this board and to serve with our other directors. With our continued support from Creative Saskatchewan, and Derek at the helm along with his amazing team, the next year will be an exciting one - and even bigger for SaskMusic and its members. WWW.SASKMUSIC.ORG SASKMUSIC ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014 3 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT BY DEREK BACHMAN It’s been another great year for SaskMusic, full of both growth of the organization and several changes. This is our first year of funding under the umbrella of Creative Saskatchewan, for both our core op- erating and programming funding. This year Creative Saskatchewan also assumed the SaskMusic Investment Programs which we had been delivering to supply travel support, marketing initiatives and record- ing programs. Prior to this transition, SaskMusic distributed just under $160,000 in grants to the Saskatchewan music industry. This shift also instigated a change in management at SaskMusic, with JP Ellson taking the CEO position at Creative Saskatchewan in February 2014, and my accepting the ED position here at SaskMusic in April. I would like to thank JP for his dedication and contributions to our orga- nization over the past five years. There were also several other staffing changes in our offices this last year. In May, Lisa Lanigan also left us to take a position at Creative Saskatchewan, and in June Jen Eisler finished her temporary contract with us. I would like to thank them both for their hard work and commitment to SaskMusic. We welcomed several new staff to our team this year; in the Saskatoon office, Bethani Jade, Administrative Assistant came on board in December 2013, and in July 2014 our new Program Manager Kaelen Klypak; and in Regina, Brittney MacFarlane joined us as our new Administrative Assistant. Rebecca Windjack moved into the role of Program & Education Coordinator, and Lorena Kelly’s role changed to Communications & Opera- tions Manager. This year, the staff and board undertook extensive planning sessions, spending 2 days in January in strategic planning, reviewing what we do as an organization and how (and if) that could change with the formation of Creative Saskatchewan. Staff then took that and did a full review of all of our programming and commu- nications, as well as completing a full member survey. This process resulted in great new ideas and ways to improve what we do and what we offer to our membership. The SaskMusic staff has worked incredibly hard delivering another great year of programming, communica- tions and opportunities for our members, and growing our industry on local, national and international lev- els. As you can see outlined in the pages of this final report you will see just how much we do as an organiza- tion. I’m incredibly proud of what SaskMusic has achieved this year because of the hard work and passion from both the Board of Directors and the Staff. I would like to thank the board, staff and all of the SaskMusic members for making it a fantastic year and I look forward to the future and growth of this organization, and of the music industry in Saskatchewan. 4 SASKMUSIC ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014 WWW.SASKMUSIC.ORG TREASURER’S REPORT BY SUSAN BUSSE This has been a year of significant change in funding. The previous funding agreement with the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport expired in August 2013 as we entered a 7-month funding agreement with the newly created government agency Creative Saskatchewan. The 7-month time period was based on our intention to realign the fiscal year cycle, effective 2014, to April 1-March 31 to match Creative Saskatchewan’s fiscal year. Although this request was at that time denied by Canada Revenue Agency, SaskMusic has since corrected the application deficiencies and received approval for a fiscal year end change to be effective beginning April 1, 2015. Summary: Statement of Financial Position: Statement of Revenue & Expenditures: Assets = $422,268 Revenues = $1,052,765 Liabilities = $118,512 Expenses = $971,619 Net Assets = $303,756 Net Revenue = $80,977 The 2013/14 revised 12 month budget represents the largest budget SaskMusic has ever operated in a fiscal year, with total revenues of $1,052,765. There are a few reasons for this increase: a) SaskMusic has maintained a strong programming initiative. b) The Creative Saskatchewan Trade Mission in Los Angeles increased both revenues and expenses by $52,175. This is not recognized as a SaskMusic initiative rather a multi sector initiative that we only managed on behalf of Creative Saskatchewan. c) Deferred Revenues from the previous fiscal totaled $89,213 which included $44,080 from the Sas- katchewan Arts Board for a Transition Fund grant received for Export Development, $37,084 from the Investment Program for artist grants that had not been completed and paid out at year-end, and $8,049 from private radio broadcasting sponsorships allocated to specific programs in this fiscal. Considering expenses, this gives a surplus of $80,977 this year with $56,135 of that to be deferred into the next fiscal year for outstanding Investment Program grants still in progress. Cash at the beginning of year was $264,576 and at end of year was $270,047. That includes a $100,000 re- serve fund held in redeemable GICs. SaskMusic also holds a $20,000 line of credit which is at $0 balance. The relationship between SaskMusic and Creative Saskatchewan remains solid and funding is expected to continue in a similar fashion in the near future. Through a combination of conservative budgeting, good management by the Executive Director and staff and wise governance from the Board of Directors, SaskMusic continues to be fiscally healthy. WWW.SASKMUSIC.ORG SASKMUSIC ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014 5 PROFILE The Bylaws of SaskMusic express its mandate as follows: • Organizational Development and Management: to ensure that the infrastructure and mechanisms for strong and focused 1. To assist in the development and promotion of Saskatchewan organizational growth are in place. musical artists and the industry on a provincial, national and • Funding Development and Management: to ensure that international level.

ACTIVITY REPORT 2014-15 10TH ANNIVERSARY PROJECT ELAN celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2014 and received project funding from the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage for a number of special activities. The first was to feature trailblazers in building Quebec’s current dynamic English- language arts community from the sparsely populated, marginal scene of the 1970s and 80s. Three panel discussions were presented in collaboration with POP Montreal and Expozine: The Montreal Formula: Thinking outside the box for survival in Montreal arts (POP Montreal) with Albert Nerenberg (host; filmmaker and laughologist), Murray Lightburn (the Dears), Krista Muir (Lederhosen Lucil), and visual artist J.C. Little; Literary Legacies: A Montreal Story (POP Montreal) with host Katia Grubisic (writer and translator), Linda Leith, founder of Blue Metropolis Foundation, and Marianne Ackerman, founder of the bilingual theatre company Theatre 1774 and Rover Arts; and Montreal Blooming: From Backwater to Music Hotbed (Expozine) with Howard Bilerman (legendary Montreal producer, former drummer for Arcade Fire), Kevin Komoda (Rational Youth), Ryhna Thompson (Envision Management), and musician Molly Sweeney. For our 10th anniversary year, ELAN co-produced Schmoozers with partners from each of the major artistic disciplines: April in collaboration with the Quebec Writers' Federation; June in collaboration with the St-Ambroise Montreal International Fringe Festival; October in collaboration with the Montreal Film Group; and December at McGill's Schulich School of Music, with a focus on students. Eastern Bloc was selected as the venue for ELAN's 10th anniversary event because it is a well- equipped visual and media arts centre. A photo retrospective of ELAN's 10-year history was projected on one wall while the Wonderwall, created at three stations where guests were photographed as they arrived, was projected on another.

  • The Sheepdogs Have at It Synopsis
THE SHEEPDOGS HAVE AT IT SYNOPSIS The Sheepdogs Have At It joins the Rolling Stone cover winners at the apex of their newfound fame and a crossroads in their careers. One might think that newfound fame would lead successful young rock stars to rest on their laurels, but nothing could be further from the truth. More than ever, with the whole world watching, the Sheepdogs need to get down to business. We join the band at their Saskatoon homecoming show in October 2011. They’ve returned for the first time since winning the Rolling Stone cover contest, this time as the opening act for Kings of Leon. We meet them and see them play for thousands of fans, their biggest audience yet. But the big task is still ahead. In January, The Sheepdogs go into a Nashville studio to record their new album, now backed by Atlantic records. Patrick Carney of The Black Keys is producing the record, and the guys have only 17 days to lay down the new tracks. This story follows the Sheepdogs into the studio as this task is carried to fruition, while alternating between the band’s current tour around the continent. There is a staggering amount of work to be done and the guys needs to keep on top of it. Occasionally, we take a big jump back in time to the early days of the band. There was a period, less than a year ago, when things weren’t going so well for the Sheepdogs. For seven years, the band had toiled in obscurity with almost no recognition.

BULLPINE BULLPINE 181 Vernon Ave. Kamloops, BC - 1-800-482-3459 - steelworkers1-417.ca Summer 2017 Clearwater May Day Parade The theme for The Clearwater May Day Parade this year was Canada 150. A few USW members and Canfor Vavenby staff, along with their families got together for the fifth year to build a float. The theme of our float was: A History of the Vavenby Sawmill. The mill was established in 1941 when Frank Capostinsky came from Alberta on behalf of Bob Swanson and bought a few of the original mills in the valley and set up the company known as CTP (Clearwater Timber Products). In 1986 CTP was bought by Slocan which then merged with and became known as Canfor in 2004. In the mid 1950's the mill unionized and the workers became part of the IWA (International Woodworkers of America) which merged with The United Steelworkers in 2004. A big thank you to all the helpers especially Keith for the design and organization of the work. The figures on top represent the “Loggers Sports Days” the community used to have to celebrate the Forest Industry in the valley. Big Barriere Block Party The second annual Big Barriere Block party was a huge success. Despite the cloudy and rainy weather, approximately 1000 people came out to enjoy the festivities . The action started with a bike rodeo for the kids from 12-2 and continued on with children's games, a vendors market, bouncy castles and live entertainment . The Big Barriere Block Party part 2 was only possible because of amazing sponsors like The United Steelworkers.
