Concept behind the cover In Leadership Oklahoma, everyone has a key role. We’re individuals with specific, unique attributes and talents that influence Oklahoma’s success. Each key unlocks a different door or area of interest, allowing Oklahoma to grow by tapping into each LOK graduate’s attributes while creating a collective momentum of progress. Message from the Chair At a recent board meeting, we had the opportunity to hear from graduates of LOK Class XXVI. Listening to the enthusiasm about their nine month endeavor brought back wonderful memories. For them it was a time of learning, exploring, and making new friends. They visited communities across the state that they had never taken the time to see. They were also afforded the opportunity to experience things that are not otherwise available, except through LOK. I appreciate the extraordinary effort made by the LOK staff, Ann and Allyson, and especially all of the host city committee volunteers. This could not happen without your continued commitment.

We also heard from members of YLOK Class XIII. It was exciting to hear the students talk about how fun, yet profound their experience was. They have new insight about the opportunities that will Joe Moran III be available to them here in their home state. They are eager to continue their education, knowing Chair that Oklahoma is a wonderful place to live, and that the possibilities are limitless for those who choose to lead. It is reassuring to see such greatness in our youth and their desire to pursue dreams right here at home. A special thanks to Lee Anne Stone and the YLOK committee for making this possible.

I want to congratulate Past Chair, Toney Stricklin, for a wonderful year where I was able to watch and learn from such an accomplished leader. Thanks to all of LOK’s past chairs for building and maintaining a remarkable organization, dedicated to educating Oklahoma’s leaders. I am grateful and humbled for the opportunity to serve such an extraordinary network of leaders. Thank you for your confidence.

Joe Moran III

Board Chair, 2013-2014 Class XXI

2 Message from the CEO

What makes Leadership Oklahoma such a special organization? Why do graduates feel so connected to each other? What is it about Leadership Oklahoma that inspires people to give back to their communities and state? How can such a diverse group of people build such a strong bond? I hear these comments all the time when I tell people that I am a part of Leadership Oklahoma. Over the past 26 years, Leadership Oklahoma has grown to become an army of 1,330 of the state’s premier leaders; recruited, educated and connected to help make a positive impact for the future of the state. Approximately 50 Oklahomans are selected each year for our flagship adult program and travel to nine communities in nine months to learn about major state issues and possible solutions. Also, our impact now includes and extends to our youth. Youth Leadership Oklahoma identifies the top 50 incoming high school seniors to travel the state on scholarship for one week each summer to experience Oklahoma and hopefully inspire them to stay and make a difference here. Leadership Oklahoma provides the resources, motivation and network to foster connections and inspire action. Together, we lead Oklahoma forward into the future. Ann Ackerman Who We Are Chief Executive Officer In 1986, a group of Oklahoma leaders began a series of meetings and discussions based on the belief that we all have a stake in developing the prosperity and confronting the problems of our state. They shared the conviction that our leadership must understand the complex differences and relationships that drive Oklahoma in order to find effective solutions. From those meetings came Leadership Oklahoma, an organization designed to create a dynamic network of leaders whose increased awareness and commitment to service will energize Oklahomans to shape the state’s future. In 1987, Leadership Oklahoma was incorporated and it is designated a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization by the Internal Revenue Service. What We Do Each year, Leadership Oklahoma brings together 50 of the state’s most outstanding leaders for an issues-oriented class program. Monthly sessions, held in various communities, address critical challenges facing our state. Participants are chosen through a rigorous application process and selected from across the state to represent Oklahoma’s professional, geographical, and cultural diversity. The goal is to tap the energies of diverse leaders that represent a microcosm of our state to initiate positive change for the benefit of all Oklahomans. During each Leadership Oklahoma class, participants learn about the issues facing their communities and other communities around our state. The real payoff is when participants are inspired by what they have learned and find ways to get more involved to improve our state. Based on the interaction and shared experience developed during the program, participants also have respect for the differences among us which must be overcome to achieve success. Leadership Oklahoma maintains its active network of 1,330 graduates from 160 communities by offering continuing opportunities for professional development, networking and involvement. On going activities are provided to members that increase awareness of critical issues and foster the connectedness of the statewide membership network. Leadership Oklahoma also recognizes the importance of investing in our youth. We know they are Oklahoma’s future leaders and we are weary of seeing young talent leave our state. We want to entice our youth to want to stay in, or return to, Oklahoma. With this in mind, in the summer of 2001, Leadership Oklahoma expanded its mission by building a program that would help accomplish this goal. Youth Leadership Oklahoma was established to develop a hope, pride, and responsibility for Oklahoma’s future in our young leaders. Leadership Oklahoma honors the outstanding contributions of Oklahoma corporate and individual leaders at the Excellence in Leadership Awards Dinner and Gala. Presentations are made in the following categories: Lifetime Achievement, Distinguished Graduate, Business Leadership, and Statewide Community Leadership. In addition, LOK recognizes one of its own members with a Distinguished Leadership Award for service to LOK. Why LOK Is Important Leadership Oklahoma is making a difference. It provides hope for the future as we work together to make Oklahoma a better place in which to live and work for all its citizens. Our graduates are actively developing real solutions to make Oklahoma a better state through involvement in state issues and leadership in the private, public, and non-profit sectors. They have dedicated themselves to the cause through active participation in hundreds of boards and committees. Leadership Oklahoma is about collaborating, connecting with others, and working for a better Oklahoma. There is a reason I hear time and again that “LOK is special.” 3 2013 - 2014 Board of Directors

The 2013 honorees with co-chairs Rick and Paula Huck Mike Neal receiving the Distinguished Graduate Award from Rick Huck and Toney Stricklin 11 Youth Leadership Oklahoma (YLOK) was created in 2001 with the mission to develop young leaders who feel hope, pride and a responsibility for Oklahoma’s future. Each YLOK class is selected through a competitive process based on proven leadership, geographic, ethnic and cultural diversity. Fifty-two of the state’s top high school juniors were selected to participate in this one-of-a-kind leadership opportunity. From June 9-14, 2013, the rising high school seniors heard from state leaders, witnessed first-hand Oklahoma’s tremendous resources, learned about and participated in the issues that affect the state, and discovered Oklahoma’s many treasures. During the week, the students traveled to Oklahoma City, Norman, Lawton, Sulphur, Tulsa, Stillwater and Enid where they learned lessons about leadership, trust, problem solving, communication, cooperation, but most importantly, “why Oklahoma is such a great place to live and work.” Along the way, the class toured the Gaylord-Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum to get a taste of Oklahoma’s finest treasures, its people; the Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur, discovering about our Native American heritage; and spent time at the Sarkeys Foundation where they learned about philanthropy. They also received once in a lifetime behind the scenes experiences at Eskimo Joe’s Printing Press in Stillwater, Williams Companies, Inc., and the Hardesty Arts Center in Tulsa. The students were given the opportunity to visit with doctors and perform laparoscopic surgery on pumpkins at INTEGRIS Bass Hospital in Enid. The class got a glimpse of “the life of a soldier” at Ft. Sill where they participated in Physical Training with Drill Sergeants, toured the Joint Fires and Effects Training System Facility, and earned a greater appreciation for our military men and women. They bonded and learned about their leadership styles during a Ropes Course at The and a “You Zoo” leadership activity. Justice Jim Winchester facilitated a presentation of “You Be the Judge” with the students who surmised the criminal justice process is more grey than black and white. Participants learned the success stories of Stan Clark and Eskimo Joe’s, Elliot Nelson of McNellie’s Group and AdvancePierre Foods in Enid. The class also experienced the advanced technologies of the Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering-OU by participating in an offshore drilling simulator. They also had their blood typed at the Oklahoma Blood Institute while observing the inner workings of a blood bank. The week concluded at the State Capitol with a mock legislative session in the House Chamber where students really tapped into their “inner legislator”. Lastly, at their graduation luncheon held in the Phillips Pavilion at the Governor’s Mansion, the YLOK experience was capped off with former Governor George Nigh as the keynote speaker, ensuring the students that anything they want in life can be achieved by staying in Oklahoma. By learning about Oklahoma’s history, culture, issues and leaders, YLOK participants develop a greater understanding and an immense appreciation of our great state. This year’s winner is Burl Ragland, a retired licensed civil engineer from Lawton, OK, who has spent more than 24 hours per week to the betterment of his community. He uses his professional knowledge, skills and abilities to improve the lives of those less fortunate, or perhaps those that just need help in completing a project. His passion is Make-A-Wish Oklahoma. He has worked to make wishes come true by serving as a project manager/ engineer to build bedrooms for children that needed bright, beautiful and comforting colors to help them deal with their pains while undergoing cancer and other types of treatment. Betty Kay Karim, Director of Program Services for Make-A-Wish Oklahoma, was presented a $2,500 check on behalf of Burl Ragland and said, “Without dedicated volunteers like Burl, we would not be able to fulfill the heartfelt wishes of Oklahoma children battling life-threatening illnesses. Burl has brought hope, strength and joy to many Wish kids and their families, and these magical memories will last a lifetime.” Laurie Tilley, Betty Kay Karim, Burl Ragland, and Toney Stricklin
