Plants have potent biochemicals and have components of phytomedicine since time immortal. India holds a goldmine of great deal of well known medicinal plants practiced traditionally for use of herbal medicine. It is generally estimated that over 6000 plants in India are in use in traditional, folk and herbal, medicine representing about 75% of the medicinal needs of the third world countries. One such medicinal herb used in Indian Ayurvedic systems of medicine is Desmodium gangeticum (Shalparni). A review of phytochemical profile of Desmodium gangeticum has been presented considering the fact that there are many species of this genus scattered All around the world, out of which Desmodium gangeticum have been phytochemically explored. Hence, in the present article, an attempt has been made to overview phytochemical studies in Desmodium gangeticum which serves as a potential source for contribution in the modern system of herbal medicine. Since information on the genetic diversity of these species is deficient, the creation of baseline data is an important means for the development of more sustainable and cost-efficient conservation approaches which eventually result in more comprehensive ex situ germplasm collections. The species analyzed are native to tropical and subtropical Asia, Australia, and Oceania and possess a potential as forage and/or medicinal plants. Moderate levels of inter-accession diversity represented by 37.5% and 33.3% of polymorphic fragments (P%) and average Jaccard’s similarity coefficients (JSCs) of 0.60 and 0.64 were found in D. heterocarpon and T. triquetrum, respectively, while moderate to high levels were detected in D. triangulare (P% = 52.9 and JSC = 0.61) and D. gangeticum (P% = 34.5 and JSC = 0.49). Mantel tests failed to reveal a correlation between geographic and genetic distances. -

Three species of Bruchinae are reported for the first time from Vietnam as feeding in seeds of members of leguminous tribe Desmodieae (Fabaceae - Faboideae). Two of them are new to science and described in genus Bruchidius: B. hoangi and B. madaguiensis. A redescription of B. minutissimus (Motschulsky) is also provided. InTroDuCTIon Desmodieae are a leguminous tribe of Faboideae (or Papilionoideae) with nume- rous members in tropical regions; it is composed of 27 genera, of which Desmodium and Lespedeza are the largest. About 190 Desmodieae species are present in Vietnam according to PHAM-HOÀNG HÔ (2002). recent contributions by DELOBEL (2010a, b) for Asian Desmodieae and CHAN et al. (2011) for world Desmodium have unveiled an unsuspected diversity of Bruchinae associated with this large group of plants. I report here on three Bruchidius species reared from pod samples of Dendrolobium lanceolatum, Desmodium gangeticum and Tadehagi triquetrum that were collected in Vietnam. This brings the number of seed beetles species known to be associated with Desmodieae in Vietnam to sixteen, and to nineteen (or twenty) species for Asia as a whole. Techniques used for sample collection and rearing were similar to those described earlier (DELOBEL & DELOBEL 2003). Screening of Medicinal Plant Extracts for Antioxidant Activity

Accepted 21 July, 2009 The methanolic crude extracts of Desmodium gangeticum (Linn.), Eclipta alba (Linn.) Ocimum sanctum (Linn.), Piper longum (Linn.), Solanum nigrum (Linn.) and Amaranthus caudatus (Linn.) were screened for their free radical scavenging properties using ascorbic acid as standard antioxidant. Free radical scavenging activity was evaluated using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical. The overall antioxidant activity of D. gangeticum was found to be the strongest, followed in descending order by A. caudatus, S. nigrum, P. longum, E. alba and O. sanctum. The IC50 values of the extracts ranged between 0.05 ± 0 and 0.19 ± 0 mg/l. The ascorbic acid levels varied from 3.86 ± 0.20 to 21.33 ± 1.49 mg/100g and the carotenoids content were observed between 9.0 ± 0.24 to 24 ± 1.16 mg/100g in plant extracts. The highest total phenols content were found to be in O. sanctum (Linn.) with the value 48.93 ± 0.24 mg/g. The present study reveals that the selected plants would exert several beneficial effects by virtue of their antioxidant activity and could be harnessed as drug formulation. -

It is cited as a highly productive oleaginous palm tree presenting high potential for biodiesel production. The aim of this work was to characterize and study the genetic diversity of A. aculeata ex situ collections from different geographical states in Brazil using microsatellite (Simple Sequence Repeats, SSR) markers. A total of 192 accessions from 10 provenances were analyzed with 10 SSR, and variations were detected in allelic diversity, polymorphism, and heterozygosity in the collections. Three major groups of accessions were formed using PCoA—principal coordinate analysis, UPGMA—unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean, and Tocher. The Mantel test revealed a weak correlation (r = 0.07) between genetic and geographic distances among the provenances reaffirming the result of the grouping. -

Chapter In Vitro Propagation of Digitalis trojana Ivanina., an Endemic Medicinal Plant of Turkey Nurşen Çördük and Cüneyt Aki Abstract Digitalis trojana Ivanina is a member of the Plantaginaceae family and known by its common name, Helen of Troy foxglove. It is perennial endemic to Çanakkale and Balıkesir, northwestern Turkey. In order to develop an efficient shoot regen- eration protocol, the leaf explants of D. trojana were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 6-benzyl adenine (0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0 mg/L) and α-naphthalene acetic acid (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 mg/L), 3% (w/v) sucrose and 0.8% (w/v) agar. The highest number of regenerated shoots was obtained from leaf explants that were cultured on MS medium with 3.0 mg/L BA+0.1 mg/L NAA. Regenerated shoots were rooted on MS medium without plant growth regulators. Rooted plants (2–3 cm) were separately transferred to pots containing a mixture of peat and perlite (2:1 v/v) and acclimatized successfully in a growth chamber.
