Becker Volker Lindenthal Monash U and U Warwick University of Munich Sharun Mukand Fabian Waldinger University of Warwick University of Munich March 2021 Abstract We study the role of professional networks in facilitating the escape of persecuted academics from Nazi Germany. From 1933, the Nazi regime started to dismiss academics of Jewish origin from their positions. The timing of dismissals created individual-level exogenous variation in the timing of emigration from Nazi Germany, allowing us to estimate the causal eect of networks for emigration decisions. Academics with ties to more colleagues who had emigrated in 1933 or 1934 (early émigrés) were more likely to emigrate. The early émigrés functioned as “bridging nodes” that helped other academics cross over to their destination. Furthermore, we provide some of the rst empirical evidence of decay in social ties over time. The strength of ties also decays across space, even within cities.     The Impact of the Nazi Racial Decrees on the University of Heidelberg Arye Carmon One of the first objectives realized by the Nazis during the years 1933-1935 was the "cleansing" (Saeuberung) of the German universities of their Jewish students and lecturers. This purge was connected with the attempt to "co- ordinate" (Gleichschaltung) German academic life with the tenets of National Socialism. Yet, while "co-ordination" and "cleansing" seem to us in retrospect to be interrelated processes, the Nazis considered them as two separate issues. The former was a long-range objective, which was never fully realized, while the ousting of Jewish academics was in fact one aspect of the Nazi "solution of the Jewish question." The following is an attempt to describe the "cleansing" process and to analyze its implications1.     Á Introduction Sander L. Gilman Theodor Lessing’s (1872–1933) Jewish Self-Hatred (1930) is the classic study of the pitfalls (rather than the complexities) of acculturation. Growing out of his own experience as a middle-class, urban, margin- ally religious Jew in Imperial and then Weimar Germany, he used this study to reject the social integration of the Jews into Germany society, which had been his own experience, by tracking its most radical cases. This early awareness of the impossibility of acculturation into what he saw as an inherently antisemitic world led him early to become a Zion- ist (at least a cultural if not a political Zionist) and concomitantly a ra- bid opponent to the rise of German fascism. A failed academic (because of, in his view, the antisemitic a itudes of both the institutions and the faculty—he was not completely wrong), his writing before and a er World War I spanned the widest readership in Germany, from theater criticism to works on the philosophy of history. As one of the most visi- ble Jewish opponents of the Nazis, he had fl ed immediately a er Hitler’s appointment as chancellor in January 1933 to Czechoslovakia, where in March of that year he was assassinated by German-speaking Nazis. Certainly his work that most captured the a ention of both his contem- poraries and our own world is this study of Jewish antisemitism.1 Lessing’s case studies refl ect the idea that assimilation (the radical end of acculturation) is by defi nition a doomed project, at least for Jews (no ma er how defi ned) in the age of political antisemitism.

Glenn rom the very beginning of his literary career in the 1950s, novel- ist Philip Roth faced charges of antisemitism, Jewish “self- F hatred,” and willful “betrayal” of the Jewish people. In 1959, when The New Yorker magazine published his short story “Defender of the Faith”—about a Jewish army recruit who uses his religion to gain special privileges from his Jewish sergeant—Roth was accused of being a “self-hating Jew” whose writings caused “irreparable damage to the Jewish people,” as much “harm,” charged one irate reader, “as all the or- ganized anti-Semitic organizations.”1 Roth was not the first or the only writer in America to be labeled a self-hating Jew. A decade earlier, Isaac Rosenfeld had faced similar ac- cusations after the publication of his essay “Adam and Eve on Delancey Street” (a meditation on the relationship between Jewish sexual and culinary taboos) in the American Jewish Committee–sponsored maga- zine Commentary. Denouncing Rosenfeld’s essay as filthy and degrad- ing to Jews, Zionist activist Carl Alpert compared its effects to “the best efforts of [Nazi propagandists] Streicher and Goebbels.”2 In 1957, lit- erary critic Sol Liptzin would use virtually identical language when he pointed to “the vogue of Jewish self-hatred” in American Jewish litera- ture.

    ‘Wo Ungesetz gesetzlich überwaltet’: Karl Kraus’s Reading of National Socialism Ari Linden (University of Kansas) ‘CONTRA-HUMAN’ POLITICS AND THE SATIRIST’S RETREAT ‘[. .] die Demokratisierung Europas ist zugleich eine unfreiwillige Veranstaltung zur Züchtung von Tyrannen[ . .]’.1 In a letter written to Gershom Scholem in 1920, Walter Benjamin provocatively suggested that the Viennese satirist Karl Kraus was on his way to becoming a ‘great politician’.2 Benjamin was presumably referring to Kraus’s radical and paradoxically ‘inhuman’ humanism, which finally, so it seems, assumed political form once the Habsburg Empire had crumbled.3 And indeed, in his essay ‘Brot und Lüge’ (1919) (one of the two specific pieces to which Benjamin is referring in this letter, the other being Kraus’s parodic ‘Volkshymne’), Kraus unambiguously declares: ‘Nur eine Politik, die als Zweck den Menschen und das Leben als Mittel anerkennt, ist brauchbar. Kein Wunder, befinden sich doch unter ihren Verehrern und Bekannten Männer wie Nietzsche, Rilke und Freud. Zu denen, über die im Zusammenhang mit Lou Andreas-Salome bisher nicht gesprochen wurde, gehört Theodor Lessing, der mit ihr im Jahre 1906 ungefähr ein halbes Jahr regelmäßig verkehrte. Zu dem Zeitpunkt, als Lou ihren Lebensüberblick verfaßte (1931-1932, Niederschrift 1933!), mochte diese Begegnung für sie nicht von solcher Bedeutung gewesen sein, daß sie sie festgehalten hätte. Auch in den Monographien über Lou Andreas-Salome wird nicht einmal Lessings Name erwähnt. Aber auch in der Sekundärliteratur über Lessing kommt Lou Andreas-Salom6 nicht vor, obwohl die Begegnung mit ihr für Lessings Werk eine der wichtigsten Begegnungen seines Lebens zu sein scheint. Das ist auch der Grund, warum ich hier auf sie eingehen möchte. * * * Als sich im Jahre 1906 der mehr als zehn Jahre jüngere Philosoph Theodor Lessing an Lou Andreas-Salom6 (1861-1937) wendet, ist sie längst eine be­ kannte Persönlichkeit. Sie hat zu dieser Zeit nicht nur eine Reihe von Essays in der Freien Bühne, in der Zeitschrift Zukunft sowie in anderen Periodika veröf­ fentlicht, sondern sie ist auch mit Büchern Im Kampf um Gott (1885, als Henri Lou), Friedrich Nietzsche in seinen Werken (1894), Ruth (1896), Aus fremder Seele (1896) und Fenitschka. Eine Ausschweifung (1898) hervorgetreten, die sie sowohl als Philosophin als auch als Schriftstellerin bekannt gemacht hatten.
