Historical Biographical Note:
The Cross Cultural Centers initially founded in 1997 at Cal State LA provided students with an inclusive and friendly space that hosted a variety of cultural, political and academic events, as well as provided resources and other support to students. Additionally the Cross Cultural Centers collaborate to annually host cultural graduations that reflect cultures of graduating seniors, Raza Grad, Black Grad and Asian Pacific Islander and Middle Eastern Graduation. The Cross Cultural Centers were made of four student resource centers, the Asian Pacific Islander Student Resource Center, the Chicana/o Latina/o Students Resource Center, Pan African Student Resource Center and the Gender & Sexuality Resource Center.
The Asian Pacific Islander Student Resource Center (APISRC) established in 1993 worked to provide services and support for students who identified as, or were interested in the Asian Pacific Islander (API) community and cultural issues. The resource centers main purpose was to encourage and promote awareness of the API cultures and students’ knowledge of important issues affecting the community and to provide opportunities for leadership and personal development. This resource center hosted annual events such as the Lunar New Year Celebration and the API Heritage month celebration. A variety of student organization such as the Muslim Student Association and the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity worked closely with the APISRC.
Chicana/o Latina/o Students Resource Center established in 1993 worked to provide services and support for students who identified as, or were interested in the Chicana/o Latina/o community and cultural issues. This resource center worked closely with student organization such as Hermanos Unidos and El Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlán.
Pan African Student Resource Center (PASRC) originally established in 1990 provided services and support for students who identify as, or were interested in the Pan African community and cultural issues. The resource center sought to provide support to students through connecting them with student organizations, faculty, staff and other resources. The PASRC also worked closely with student organization like the Black Student Union established in 1967 on campus and other African American Sororities and Fraternities. This resources center also collaborated to host annual events like their Black Liberation Month and Kwanzaa Celebration.
Gender & Sexuality Resource Center originally established in 1976 as the Women’s Resource Center is dedicated to creating safe and respectful learning spaces, catering specifically to the empowerment of Women, Men and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning/Queer (LGBTQ) community. The space focused itself in challenging societal norms that have been used historically to oppress and marginalize, while raising awareness on contemporary issues faced by these communities. This organization in addition to working with student organization such as the Queer Connection and the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance also produced Loudmouth Zine in 2003 This Zine published the works of emerging and experienced writers and artists focused on feminist issues.
